Looking at joining a local social and maybe visiting my first club, any advice would be greatly welcomed

OP, you're not that far from Dunstable where Penthouse Playrooms is. They run an Ice Breaker event, on a Thursday evening once a month that could be ideal for you. It's a no pressure social with some play areas open.

When it comes to socials in the area, there is regular Northampton Social, as well as MK one - look on the forum, as both are currently being advertised.
