Liverpool

Stretch the area to prevent anything seizing up then hot bath to ease the aches & pains.

If you want to reduce any inflammation then use ibuprofen and ice.

If you want to keep the muscles moving and soft then use heat.

Depends what you feel you have done to the muscles and what you want to achieve - treat a potential injury or soothe over use xxx

Basic rules for muscle strain.

1) keep them warm (perskindol or deep heat great for that)

2) keep them moving. If you let them rest they will seize up and feel 10 times worse. Not too much just keep them supple.

3) take pain killers. It's a myth that dulling the pain will make you over do it. Muscle pain tends to be self limiting anyway.

Hope that helps.

Alternate heat and cold on the area.

Ice packs for 20 mins will reduce swelling.

And use heat ie hot water bath or bottles or heat pads to loosen the muscle up.

Sore lower back pain again

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

It's clearly a posture issue. . Do you do any core muscle work ? It's called referral. . Your lower back is doing too much work because some other muscles are not supporting you . A trip to the Physio would be well worth it . They are very good at finding the root cause . If you keep getting back pain. . It's really important to get it looked at. It's a hugely important muscle group .

44 ? Na . . You can strengthen muscles with core work just using your body weight . And it won't matter what you're doing. . You won't get back pain .

Was told by a friend that sitting in a hot bath with a back problem is not the answer as the back is bent. Better to have a hot shower with the back straight and all of the back muscles relaxed, unlike in a bath when some of the muscles will be in tension.

Do not use heat, the people who say use heat are fools. Will work short term but more damage long term.

A muscle tear is like thousands of tiny bruises, heat will let the brusies spread. Ice bath or ice packs, 10 mins on 10 mins off, they restrict the blood flow and stop the bruise spreading

Ice bath

Straight after exercise.

Wear compression clothing

Ensure you cool down enough after the exercise to flush out the lactic acid.

Make sure you don't over do itin the first place .

Eat healthy fresh food, lot's of protein to aid recovery.plenty of water.

Stay away from booze and shitte food.

Don't take pain killers

And do some more gentle exercise the following day.

This, don't go heating anything up. Might feel relaxing but cooling everything will reduce any swelling / inflammation and speed up recovery
