Ask before touching - it's amazing how many people don't!

Sometimes that includes the hosts. Happened to a good few people I knew at a regular house party.

Burton upon stather

I attended my first social event recently and luckily after getting the courage up the first people I talked to were a very friendly group chatting away and they were extremely welcoming so I would suggest trying the same.

Find people who are going and chat prior to the event so when you get there you have friendly faces to talk too.

We have found this approach useful when going to a party where a list is circulated in advance. Much easier (even as a couple) to walk into a place full of strangers, which may be a bit more "full on" than a club, if you have chatted to people on here and arranged to say Hi.
