New profile requesting verification from old profile
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hello,
I am after some advice as someone we met 9 years ago has started a new profile on here and has asked us to verify them based on a meet from 9 years ago. I have already said no as it does not feel right, because they could choose not to display the verification stating we met them 9 years ago but using the meets summary it would look like they had met recently, therefore misleading other users on the site.
My question is am I right or being too awkward as single guys have a hard enough time already?

No you're right to say no. We have had similar requests from guys who are on and off like yoyo's. We usually say if it's been more than six months or a year we won't re verify.
It's misleading to other fab users if it's a recent Veri but from nine years ago. A lot changes in a year let along nine.

What would change? Are they no longer human? |

But is it misleading to users on here if they think we have met recently when we haven’t?

You just say in the veri when you met. What difference does it make when you met them? |

As I said earlier they can choose not to display the verification stating we met 9 years ago but using the verification summary it would appear they had met when I left the verification |

I get as to re-verify people so often they seem to come and go over night. I've got in my profile if I haven't seen them in person in the last six months I can't re verify them. They might have changed. Some people seem to upload exactly the same pictures even though I know that they used them on one of their first profiles which might have been over 5 years ago. It is up to you, of course, that's just how I do it. |

If youve kept in touch with the person and know that there pretty sane still, i would, but if i hadnt seen or heard from them, then no way, whos to say they havent turned into a nut job in the last nine yrs. Its completely up to you anyway, if its feels right not to veri them for watever reason then thats the right thing to do for u!! |

I've got a few friends who left, and came back a while later.
We'd stayed in contact and I was more than happy to offer to give them veris.
I've had requests from others, I had a lot of socials when I first joined.
They left, then reappear & ask for a veri.
I've declined.
I don't know them, I spent 20/30mins drinking coffee with them 2yrs ago.
I see the veri system as a 'safety net' I'm not giving someone a thumbs up, when they maybe the biggest idiot going. |

Nine years is a heck of a long time during which any number of things could have changed including how that person actually behaves and the way they look - a few months then yes I might be inclined to re-verify, but 9 years then it'd be a no from me. |

Why don’t you just say you met him many years ago on an old profile and can verify genuine he’s and turned up etc. That’s not misleading at all, maybe he got into a long term relationship which now ended, we all know how difficult it is with new profiles |

People can hide the verification but still have the privileges of being verified and people might not know how long ago that verification occurred. |

As the OP pointed out though - he could hide the veri and appear to have had a recent meet from the summary, so putting that they met nine years ago would be immaterial. |

As the OP stated the person may not display the verification and people may assume it was from the date stated on the profile, as in recent.
How about...met this guy 9 years ago and them he went away for an 8 stretch nice to see him out of the cuffs and back here....hmmmm not so sure where you been fella for 9 years hahah
If it were me I'd also tell him to piss off, politely of course. |

So many of us are or have been on and off here for years. I would never dream of asking people to re-verify me. I deleted so tough! You just let people know you’ve been on and off and yhat you’ve had meets. If that’s not enough information for them, then you’re obviously not connecting anyway and they’re not right for you. |

It's a bit cheeky. And if the person is a Fab on and off-er that would make me cross. I would verify again BUT say met 9 years ago etc. And maybe say to the person if they leave Fab again you wont veri them. Hope this helps.
And remember its ALWAYS up to YOU how you use Fab. C Xx |

"So many people use verifications as a baby sitting service. "
I don't think it is. I think it's a tool to use to help you judge a person. Requires some judgement and reading between the lines.
I think babysitting would be Fab going through complex measures to make sure everyone is absolutely 100% real, not a timewaster, etc, which people regularly demand. |

What can verifications prove? Seriously. Nothing. |

"OP some of your pics are nine years old is that misleading?"
Yes they are but the date is there clear to see not HIDDEN also there are recent ones so as not to mislead anyone, which I am saying this person could do with the verification |

And some people will only allow verified people to message them, so it opens the door.
When I verify someone I'm vouching for them just a little bit, that I know they look like their pictures ( on that date) and that they showed up and could hold some kind of a basic (at least) conversation. If you are happy to verify them do it, |

That someone else is willing to say they're real. Depending on the verifications, how many, etc, it adds up. |

A verification on it's own? Absolutely nothing.
A number of verifications from a range of different people spread over a period of time, or a verification trail from a single verification can prove quite a lot including whether that person is who they say they are.
Agree verifications on their own shouldn't be used to jump to conclusions necessarily they're just part of the toolset available to make an informed decision about someone you potentially may be considering spending some time with.

Yeah. Verifications can be faked, and the ability to not publish them means that negative things are less likely to be published. But in conjunction with other evidence, including your interaction with the person, the number and type of verification, etc, it helps build a picture.
(for example, my very first verification was from a guy with over 100 published verifications over years. Which probably pointed to me being real more than a veri from a blank virtually new account with no published veris) |

Suppose so I didn’t think about that but does it matter how long ago it was if they liked the person 9 days ago or 9 years ago it’s still that person that they verified I would imagine in a positive way or he wouldn’t be asking them to re-verify and they must have left a good impression for him to remember them.
Or maybe it’s just me and my good nature that does get me in trouble sometimes lol |

I met someone 3 times. Verified the first time I met them. They stole money from my handbag the third time. Even though I blocked them so my verification was hidden, it still showed that I had verified them without showing the text. Verifications are not guarantees... |
