For us it just happens naturally; maybe it wouldn't work if you tried to engineer the scenario; don't over think it! We tend to do this at clubs as the situation is fluid anyway; we don't arrange to meet it's just who is there on the night and see what happens.
Of course if the other half is not happy with 'taking a back seat' so to speak then again it could cause it's own issues. Certainly at clubs where there are single guys we find it's easier as on a couples only night you sometimes might all need to be involved and that's not quite the same.
