18 year old me, just moved to London, replied to an ad in Loot, the weekly free ads paper, writing a letter to an older couple late 40s advertising for a single male.
Enclosed a head photo and stamped addressed envelope- imagine that, giving a photo and my address to randoms - and then waiting.
I had a reply about two weeks later, a short letter with head photo of the couple, their home landline number and the best times/days to ring and speak to them.
One call (from a phone box as I lived in a flat with no phone!) and arrangements were made to go to theirs in a nice quiet cul de sac in South Norwood a couple of nights later, on a midweek night, and that’s what I did.
Never forget the nervousness I felt knocking on the door, husband answered and invited me in, telling me she was waiting in the lounge. First one was quite random in a way. Recently separated I was ‘living’ in a bedroom and joined Fab to ‘get out a bit’.
