I assume it's so you can see who's close by and contact them if you would like to meet them. I think it is best used when away from home

Had a year break with my partner, she had a semi casual relationship with a guy two streets away when she started renting, from using the see who’s near option. Definitely works….. think normally used by people travelling though.
