I imagine a lot more genuine.

It would take people much more effort to put an ad in a contact mag and await replies. And would cost a lot in stamps to reply to every ad with 'fancy a fuck'.

I've met swingers in the part who still used contact mags for that very reason.

Indeed and there's still a few out there. You had to buy them, they were slow, published every quarter (usually), and could easily be out of date by the time they reached your local newsagent or landed on your doorstep.

Probably fewer fakes because of the cost and effort of placing and replying to an advert.

Even nowadays some people don't have internet access at home.

Oh I remember them well, could end up spending a fortune on forwarding fees and stamps. Also I believe certain other publications used to run classified ads aimed at people into swapping/swinging

I used to use Ad Mag as well! I had many a good meet from there. Premium rate phone numbers so you kept the message to a minimum, but it seemed to work. As a single guy, I had 2 or 3 replies per ad, and only ever one no show.

i secretly mourn the passing of the great 'rendezvous' and 'desire' . seem to me like folk just made a bit more effort about it in those days and the process itself screened out a lot of the timewasters and game players plauging the websites these days. also as a single guy 6 replies would lead to 3 meets on average. i bet most guys on here would give their left nut for those kind of returns .

The thing with the contact mags was that there were no time wasters but there were quite a few single ladies who required a small fee for their services lol

The Northern link was really good for meets back in the day lol

Yes the northern link or northern line as it later became known had the same picture on the front just the border around the edge changed colour but the inside was always B&W.. have to say I did meet some nice folks through it!

Contact mags were expensive and a waste of time. We tried contacting quite a few people this way. They were usually a system of having to phone a premium rate numbr to listen to the advertisers message then leave your home number because there were no mobile phones. That was the first big stumbling block then you would end up, if you were VERY lucky, getting a phone call from some weirdo. That was our experience. And of course a huge phone bill !!

The premium rate phone numbers were a later addition to contact mags and were really an attempt to introduce a wee bit 'live' action to stem off the rise of the internet. There's no doubt some publishers abused the system to rip off some punters

I've collected some early contact mags and have examples which are little more than a few A4 sheets badly photocopied in black and white, folded over into a wee booklet and stapled to keep them in place. They worked though.

Uselessly frustrating things, contact mags. We must have sent out dozens of replies and got about a 5% response.

Much better at the Sex Maniacs Disco, does anyone remember that? At Kidderminster. We were so shy we hardly got up to much, but we were canoodling for days after each party, on the memory.

Love,

Janet

I'm sorry contact mags didn't work for you but there's plenty of people* from whom they did work - they wouldn't have lasted so long otherwise.

* some of those people are here on Fab Swingers.

I'm with Glasgow Jim here - I was a keen user of Rendezvous mag many many years ago, 'back before they had dinosaurs' as I always say to the kids..

It was good fun, if a lot of effort, but the returns were definitely worthwhile - I wonder if, simply BECAUSE it was more work to do, people wre less likely to be what we nowadays call timewasters?

And the anticipation was greater too, because you had to wait weeks sometimes between an initial approach/response and finding out if anyone fancied you. Ah, them were the days.. And I had hair then too

There was also the cost element. It wasn't much but it must have deterred some who'd have abused the system had it been free (like they do on the internet).

Perhaps most importantly, because it was essentially a 'get a letter sent to your home' method of communication, a lot of married men masquerading as single men couldn't risk having letters delivered to their homes.

Lexy, you make a very good point (once I could drag my attention away from your profile pic!!!).

The pics in Rendezvous (which of course were all black & white and smaller than a postage stamp) would have horrified today's swingers with the voluminous bushes on view

What I meant, of course, was that I had cosiderably more hair on my head than err.. in my lap! Now I'm proud of the freshly trimmed smoothness downstairs, but hate it on top.. go on, somebody go for the obvious 'I like it on top' gag now
