We're booked for a fortnight in Maspalomas this coming September, staying at Canary Garden Club.
Anyone stayed there? Hints and tips for finding fun? (apart from the dunes, of course 
Is it worth hiring a car, or is the local transport sufficient?

You are staying really near La Mirage.
For transport to clubs in PDI it will be 5-5.50 EUR by taxi.
So for that you do not need car.
From airport you can take bus to Maspalomas / PDI and folow by taxi.
Taxi for the whole trip is unnecessary expensive.
Rent a car for a week cost LESS then taxi from airport and to airport.
With your car you can stop in Carrefour half way from airport and there bier and wine / cava cost some 70% less then in markets in Maspalomas (as nearest shop to you in Faro). Food is some 50% less.
And its nice to spend day in hils in center of islands.
So if you will eat in restaurants and only go to clubs in PDI then you do not need car.
If you plan to cook few your dinners and make a trip outside of Maspalomas/ PDI then rent a car.
Concerning fun easiest for you will be to check all advices concerning PDI here in forums.

We're Maspalomas regulars - 2 to 3 trips a year. We always hire a car from Autoreisen as they are the only company without hidden fees / tricks.
Fun is to be found by hanging around kiosk 4 on the beach (the swingers area) or the many clubs in Playa Del Ingles. Our favourite though is Eternity... slightly out of the centre and with a more Spanish crowd. We're there 27th Aug for 2 weeks... |

The swingers clubs in that area - are they just bars/clubs that turn a blind eye to it or are they 'official' swingers clubs?
Does any naughty play go on there? And do the ladies wear naughty/revealing outfits?
We're hoping to attend in early Sept.... but not booked anything yet! |

There are official swinging clubs in the cita centre, downstairs, but or favourite is 2x2 club in la sandia centre. Lots of play in there.  |
