Having lived there for forty years the only advice I have is don’t go!!!!
I’m sure it’s changed a lot in the last 16 years so enjoy your trip away.

All depends what you’re looking for....
Chinnerys on the seafront is a good live music venue but doubtful they’ll have anything on atm, but the background music is good if just having a drink (depends on your music tastes I suppose!).
Old Leigh is is a lovely little place full of the old sheds with arts, crafts and plenty of good seafood to choose from.
Shoebury Garrison - well worth a trip to see just some of the houses and area!
