Yes but it's not just one person who has broken the rules. There have been numerous people in positions of authority and responsibilty who should be setting the example who got caught not just breaking the rules but doing so massively. Even the professor who is responsible for instigating the policy in the first place chose to disregard it completely, Dominic Cummings is just the latest in a long line to get caught and I'm sure there will be others too.

It's a slap in the face for people everywhere.

Well the question was specifically about Mr Cummings.

In terms of me risking catching covid19 the entire government and its advisors could break the rules and it still wouldn't persuade me to take a chance.

The vast majority of the population have adhered very strictly to the government rules, which were at their strongest at the time of his several trips of a few hundred miles. I avoided any travel at all.

Even now, people are hardly different.

This will encourage some to believe that it's OK to mix with multiple friends and family and travel in public even when infected. It may have a small effect in fab.

We don't know yet if he or Johnson have much respect for the country. He could be gone in a couple of days. If he goes, it will relieve some of the increased disrespect of the government, the rules and the law. It places the police and others in a very poorly respected position.

The idea is not to spread the virus. The government's heavy handed approach is overkill, a bit like banning driving except in exceptional circumstances to stop people speeding. Slavish rule following is for the hard of thinking.

Hi everyone.

Bit of good news for your Morday morning.

Because of our high rates of testing and our low levels of community transmission, we're now able to plan for the coming weeks – and getting back to a few more of the things everyone's been missing.

From 11.59pm on 31 May, we'll be increasing gathering limits to 20 people and allowing overnight stays.

That means you can sleep over at a mate's or rent somewhere for a weekend away.

And more community facilities and businesses will be able to reopen – including places like libraries, community centres, beauty therapy and tattoo studios.

As with everything, these changes come with strict rules around distancing, density and hygiene. The contact details of customers and people using the facilities will also need to be recorded to allow tracing.

I'm sure people will have questions about why X is allowed if you can't do Y – but this really isn't an exercise in 'whataboutery'.

We've had to make some tough calls. We can't just open the floodgates on everything all at once, and risk throwing away all our hard work.

I hope people appreciate this point. We have to be cautious – and careful.

Then, if it all goes to plan and we're tracking okay with case numbers, we'll be able to make some more changes a bit later in the month.

From 11.59pm on 21 June, that would include reopening gyms, indoor sports facilities, movie theatres – and the snow season will be able to kick off.

And finally, a message to all our employers out there. I really need your help on this one.

I appreciate this isn't possible for all workplaces. But if your staff are able to work from home, and have been doing so – we need to keep that going.

We simply can't have thousands of people on trains and trams – let alone the logistical challenges of communal kitchens, lifts and big office buildings.

I know I've said this before, but as we all have more choices and more options, it's even more important:

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should race out and do it.

We've come so far – and it's up to all of us to make this work.

"Pretty sure 99% of people on here won't risk getting a deadly virus just for a leg over, but each to their own"

Depends on whether they're already risking their lives every day as key workers, or as the people who have recently been told to go back to work because they can't work from home.

If you are successfully self-isolating, then perhaps it is reckless to seek sex right now. But if you and the person you're meeting are already doing jobs that put you at risk (hospital worker, retail worker, bus driver etc.) then this becomes a lot less black and white.

There is no sudden end to this virus. If it's going to go away, it's going to go out with a whimper rather than a bang. So just how long are people willing to let fear of this virus dictate their lives? Another few months? Another year? Another 5 years? The rest of their lives? The answer is going to be different for different people, and as we get further into lock down, the numbers who have fallen off the wagon are only going to increase.

I rather like the Dutch idea of single people picking one single fuck buddy for the duration. Our real concern as part of this promiscuous community is enabling exponential spread by keep having sex with lots of different people.

There is the argument he was trying to get childcare. What from his parents, parents that are in the age bracket that are most at risk?

He would of infected another household.

For me, I don't care what party, Labour, Lib dem, Tory, Monster Raving Loony...

If you set those rules, you don't break them. 'Lead by example' surely?

It's not really about that though, it's trust and how this government just manipulates the truth. It's so dangerous, even more when people accept that manipulation

For me it's not political or hatred, it's what Cummings represents and his policy making position within the government.

The guidelines will now be ignored by people who'd previously adhered to them.

The only way for the government to reclaim credibility is for Cummings to be sacked, that way the public will see noone is immune from the consequences of ignoring/fudging the guidelines.

Once again, for those who are arguing without doing any reading, here are the rules.

Please highlight where you can drive to the home of a vulnerable patent, or even any other location, in case both parents 'might' become ill and require help with childcare:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection#if-you-are-living-with-children

Stay at home: guidance for households with possible coronavirus (COVID-19) infection

Updated 18 May 2020

"Main messages

if you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for at least 7 days from when your symptoms started. (The ending isolation section below has more information)

after 7 days, if you do not have a high temperature, you do not need to continue to self-isolate. If you still have a high temperature, keep self-isolating until your temperature returns to normal. You do not need to self-isolate if you only have a cough or anosmia after 7 days, as these symptoms can last for several weeks after the infection has gone

if you live with others and you are the first in the household to have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), then you must stay at home for at least 7 days, but all other household members who remain well must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. See the explanatory diagram

for anyone else in the household who starts displaying symptoms, they need to stay at home for at least 7 days from when the symptoms appeared, regardless of what day they are on in the original 14 day isolation period. The ending isolation section below has more information, and see the explanatory diagram

staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community

if you can, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period

if you cannot move vulnerable people out of your home, stay away from them as much as possible

reduce the spread of infection in your home: wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water, or use hand sanitiser; cover coughs and sneezes

if you have coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms:

do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital

you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you’re staying at home

testing for coronavirus (COVID-19) is not needed if you’re staying at home

if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, or your condition gets worse, or your symptoms do not get better after 7 days, then use the NHS 111 online coronavirus (COVID-19) service. If you do not have internet access, call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999

if you develop new coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms at any point after ending your first period of isolation (self or household) then you need to follow the same guidance on self-isolation again"

after 7 days, if you do not have a high temperature, you do not need to continue to self-isolate.

For a medical emergency dial 999

if you develop new coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms at any point after ending your first period of isolation (self or household) then you need to follow the same guidance on self-isolation again""

Would his autistic son not fall into the vulnerable category to be moved out the house if possible? Finding suitable care for an autistic child is not always as simple as sending them to the closest family member. The medical reason for the travel that Boris refuses to discuss, is the fact that DC son is autistic, which comes with own complexities

"Do you know what ! I have been backing him as I believed he travelled on the day of the lockdown. Now on checking it seems that he travelled during lockdown.

I'm going to have to re check the dates n facts.......

I still don't want him to go though. ( im not a dom lover or a tory but I detest the blind hatred that drives these rallies ) "

Right granny I'll first get out of the way I'm a labour supporter.

But that is nothing to do with this as it's not a party political thing .

There are 2 reasons why I think he should go.

1 The Northeast and Yorkshire had very little infection rate at that time, but where he came from london had shed loads. I hope this is really looked into as they can gather his and his family movements while up here..its not hard to do with technology.

2 his actions of the one law for me and another for the plebs has really put the lockdown in jeopardy.

And I'll add a third as it just looks downright hypocritical with the double standards and the twisting of the rules.

Yeah he needs to go granny

That does explain quite a lot to be honest. Cummings himself is what we used to describe as a little eccentric. He comes across as abrupt and slightly odd and wears strange clothes. If what you say is true I am glad I have not joined the mob calling for his head, it's unkind and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I believe the 'rule' permitted others to leave their homes to provide care for a vulnerable person so a family member/volunteer would have been allowed to go to the Cummings' permanent address to provide care for the child if the need did arise. It didn't mention taking the vulnerable person elsewhere, not that I'm aware of anyway.

Apologies I misunderstood your post

I don't think autism puts someone in the shielding category to be classed as vulnerable from a medical/shielding perspective

As a parent of an autistic child myself, bringing a new face or carer into the environment would not have been possible. Firstly not many carers would have done it, secondly autistic children don't like sudden change, going to his grandparents would not have been strange for him, but having a new person caring for him, could have completely upset the balance. My son won't leave me alone, if I'm sick in the same house as him, he would not understand that he needs to stay away from me, he would cry outside my bedroom door until he could come in. My son had a full 3 hours meltdown at his nursery which only stopped when I picked him up, the reason, the weather was bad so he couldn't go outside, so his routine ws disrupted.... There are alot complexities in looking after autistic children, and an obvious solution to us, is not always so obvious for autistic children

If this is true then they need to say so. Like Boris said last night, Cummings should say himself what happened. It shouldn't be up to his cronies to defend him as it just looks pathetic.

I can understand why he may have been very worried at that time. It was right at the start of lockdown when people were very scared. Panic buying, trapped at home, we had never been in such a situation before. It was surreal. I am sure most parents would move the earth to help and protect their kids.

But the fact that at least 1 member of the family was infected means they should have stayed home. The guidance was - and is - very clear on that.

I understand that. I just don't recall them ever making an exception clear to the public, which if there was such an exception, every family with an autistic child should have been made fully aware of it so they wouldn't have to worry over breaking rules if they were to become unwell and could make provisional arrangements in advance juat incase. Surely every family with an autistic child is just as important and worthy of empathy as the Cummings??

if you develop new coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms at any point after ending your first period of isolation (self or household) then you need to follow the same guidance on self-isolation again"

I understand that. I just don't recall them ever making an exception clear to the public, which if there was such an exception, every family with an autistic child should have been made fully aware of it so they wouldn't have to worry over breaking rules if they were to become unwell and could make provisional arrangements in advance juat incase. Surely every family with an autistic child is just as important and worthy of empathy as the Cummings??"

Exceptions have been made, as an autism parent it was highlighted in the Many groups I'm part of, the exceptions are on the government website

Vulnerable is medically vulnerable in this context. It's even clarified "(such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions)"

However, if wish to extend this Cummings was not actually ill when he broke lockdown. He did this "following his instincts".

He has family that could have come to collect his son should the situation have changed or could have been done from the start.

If I was in the public eye I would not put my child's disability out there to be ripped apart.... Look at how horrible they are towards katie price son.... The media and society are horrible when it comes to disabilities "

Very good point.

Can't really believe some people are asking 'what's he done?"

Apart from broke the lockdown. Apart from the farcical attention-seeking running out of the back door of Number 10 to distract attention from his glove puppet on the news. Apart from interfering in the Science Advisory Group of Experts meeting - and he is NOT expert in any kind of science and should not have even been there. Apart from asking his mate along as well, whose 'science' qualification was manipulating Facebook data illegally. Apart from awarding multi-million government contracts to his friends' friends, without even a public bidding process. Apart from lying, with the rest of HMG, about his whereabouts during lockdown when the police have confirmed he was where he should not have been and HMG has basically said everyone is lying.

And still he will be there, because the voting public loves liars and frauds. They knew what they were voting for. Demanding he should be sacked is like asking Orville to sack Keith Harris.

He isn't everything that's wrong with this country. The PM, a middle-class boy pretending to be an aristocrat, lying, cheating, relying on the bank of Mum & Dad, patronising the plebs with a bit of cod-Latin half-remembered from school and allowed to make speeches chiefly comprised of 'er' and 'um', is. Actually, even that's wrong.

What's wrong with this entire country is that this pathetic comedy act gets voted for, again and again, while the only thing the alleged Opposition could do was put up someone so totally, transparently unelectable.

Covid isn't the disease. It's a symptom.

"Won’t be breaking the rules.... but you just made it almost impossible for the police to do their job now...

I am going to feel sorry for them now as they literally have no legs to stand on "

This is exactly it. The 'Cummings Defence' - approved of by the PM - will lead to a lot of non-payment of fines.

Exceptions have been made, as an autism parent it was highlighted in the Many groups I'm part of, the exceptions are on the government website

But you have to ask yourself this question. If it was all above board, make a statement at the time. People would have understood, just be honest. They could of avoided this story. They didn't.

Why did the press hold onto the story for so long? Why not release it at the time? The police attended the address and left without giving him a fine, so they obviously felt his reason was reasonable.... The media is hyping up something now for a reason... His sons disability is none of anyone's business. His boss and the police have chosen to not take it further. It's the media who have made a big issue after the fact "

How do you know it was held onto for so long? Maybe it was literally only this week? They have to check they have a story.

Newcastle and Gateshead

interesting now that it looks like the police complaints commission of durham have now asked Durham police to investigate and a full enquiry into the dominic cummings affair....

so bearing in mind that no.10 tried to throw Durham Police under the bus and say they lied..... all it will take is durham police to get the ANPR details, and his mobile phone GPS data and cummings may take the government down with him....

we all know he went to barnard castle with his wife and child for her birthday, why are the government trying so hard to protect him?

I wonder is both the met police and durham police will try and charge him seperately?

That does explain quite a lot to be honest. Cummings himself is what we used to describe as a little eccentric. He comes across as abrupt and slightly odd and wears strange clothes. If what you say is true I am glad I have not joined the mob calling for his head, it's unkind and they should be ashamed of themselves.

"

It's his head being called for not his son's. Having an autistic child isn't a get out of jail free card, there are lots of children with complex needs whose parents have managed to observe the lockdown measures.

Remember the 13yo who died alone and denied a proper funeral? How do you think his parents feel? Cummings is the one who should be ashamed of himself.

The public deserves responses to unanswered questions:

How 'ill' were the Cummings? Were they physically unable to look after their son?

Why did they both have to make the journey?

Did they visit Barnard Castle and if so why?

Was Johnson notified about the trip north?

What other arrangements were considered and why was both parents travelling to Durham regarded as the best option?

Where is the link?

Is there an exception that allows for you driving an infected individual across the country to another location?"

The child was infected, his wife was, and he may have been. They drove to suitable child care incase they BOTH became too ill care for the child.

As I said, the information around autistic children is on the government website. Social workers of disabled children were given guidelines to follow in supporting those children, and some social workers have weighed up the guidelines against the risk of the disabled child and sometimes breaking the rules was the only solution. If I fell ill, my safety plan would require the rules to be broken, my safety plan was accepted by social services because it was the safest plan for my sons wellbeing. Luckily I've not had to use my safety plan, but as the social worker these are guidelines not laws, not everyone's circumstances are going to be covered and that's when common sense needs to be used factoring safety measures aswell

Maybe some families didn't know to look for it. It could have easilly have been made clear as a specific exception to the rules at many of the daily briefings. Maybe some believed they had to isolate at home if they developed symptoms and not leave home for any reason like was drummed into everyone over and over again.

My first instinct was he should go for the first break of rules. So far the others have no proof. I think he should resign for the sake of the lockdown and put his version a bit latter. I expect he could be 're hired.

Now though learning his son is autistic and seeing posts from those on here with an autistic child I'm not so sure. It does seem there is provision in the rules that allow a different course of action. Only those in a similar situation can know what its like

It also explains why Dominic Cummings appears kind of abrupt and eccentric. He is probably a little Autistic. Everyone is happy enough to shout the praises of Greta Thurman and say how brilliant she is. Often autistic people have Brillaint ideas. Wasn't "stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives" a brilliant slogan ?.

Perhaps we should be giving him a Knighthood LOL. Oh well. I think the people calling for his head had better fuck off now. Their balloon is well and truly burst.

Presumably the plan is triggered when someone becomes 'too ill to care' for their children? There's no claim the Cummings were in that position.

If "the elite" started putting their hands in a fire, would you do it too?

They shouldn't be allowed to break rules and should face repercussions like anyone else. But to start risking the spread of a potentially deadly virus just because someone else has acted irresponsibly is just silly.

Had they stayed in London and become to ill how would the kid get to Durham? Bearing in mind the child is autistic, may not drive in certain cars, may only go with certain people... There is alot we don't know about how autism effects his child.... Hindsight is not present in the moment, and sometimes others logic is not always your logic.... He did what he thought was right for his family.... Was it right or wrong.... Who knows.... Do all the people here judging and throwing out all the "he should have......" actually have an autistic child? Or had the virus and suddenly have to scatter for a solution to your child's care needs.... Fine the man nd move on if it will make everyone feel better.... But for him to loose his job for doing what he thought ws right for his child.... Really?

"Do you know what ! I have been backing him as I believed he travelled on the day of the lockdown. Now on checking it seems that he travelled during lockdown.

I'm going to have to re check the dates n facts.......

I still don't want him to go though. ( im not a dom lover or a tory but I detest the blind hatred that drives these rallies )

He would of infected another household.

For me, I don't care what party, Labour, Lib dem, Tory, Monster Raving Loony...

If you set those rules, you don't break them. 'Lead by example' surely?

It's not really about that though, it's trust and how this government just manipulates the truth. It's so dangerous, even more when people accept that manipulation "

you points are valid about what he should have done but the point is its happened and its been and gone

people are rightly annoyed, but to throw the toys out the pram and start heading out meeting who they like doesn't go back in time and change the situation or even stick it to the government like they seem to think it will , its just makes the situation more risky for everyone they come in contact with , most likely friends and family they care about

if someone sets a bad example and you knows its a bad example, its totally childish to follow along with it and use it as justification for your own crappy behaviour

This is absolutely what the press at the briefing yesterday should have asked. Boris even said DC had 'no other option' or similar words.

He might get the credit for the "stay at home" but that has been used in many countries around the world. Dont know which one used it first though...

To add, I was told by my sons social worker, as per government guidelines, to make a safety plan for my kids in the event I became too ill to care for them.... It was there, if you knew to look for it.

Presumably the plan is triggered when someone becomes 'too ill to care' for their children? There's no claim the Cummings were in that position.

Had they stayed in London and become to ill how would the kid get to Durham? Bearing in mind the child is autistic, may not drive in certain cars, may only go with certain people... Or had the virus and suddenly have to scatter for a solution to your child's care needs.... Fine the man nd move on if it will make everyone feel better.... But for him to loose his job for doing what he thought ws right for his child.... Really? "

He had relatives in London. Is he some kind of psychic that he knew him and his wife would both have to go into ICU? I'm utterly sure there are thousands of parents that are in the same situation that have not jumped in a car and driven hundreds of miles to possibly infect an uninfected household. I'm afraid there is just too much that doesn't add up.

The child was infected, his wife was, and he may have been. They drove to suitable child care incase they BOTH became too ill care for the child.

"

In which case he should have self isolated, just as everyone else is required to do in these circumstances.

"No one needed that.

Just the dates he travelled thanks. "

the coronavirus(2020)Act went into law on the 20th march

Lockdown offically began on the 23rd march

Johnson confirmed as having covid on 27th march, same day Cummings seen sprinting away from downing street

we don't know the "actual" date he went up... but we know that Durham Police spoke to Cummings dad abou it on March 31th...

so somewhere between 28th and 30th....

Indeed, I suspect we're all chasing a sea of red herrings.

The more I hear the more I believe Cummings and the government are creating reasons for the journey which fall within the lockdown exclusion criteria.

"My first instinct was he should go for the first break of rules.

Simple solution...ask permission first before you potentially throw the government's lockdown measures plan into jeopardy!"

As I say I am not in that position so cannot judge with regards to the rules. I prefer to listen to those in that position who have the experience of looking after an autistic child. I did not know about his child or the fact that their is different provisions available. As I say my first instinct is he should have resigned for the sake of the lockdown and then come back later.

I think you guys calling for his head including Sir Keir. Sir Keir will be bloody annoyed with his informants because they've made him look like a knob too. Dominic has got you lot sussed I'm afraid. He wrote the rules which gave him exemption. He knows how difficult it is to deal with an autistic child and that he needed that back up his parents and could not just get any old nanny in at the drop of a hat.

I'm afraid you need to put your stones away again.

The lesson here is be very careful about allying yourself with the virus. It doesn't like labour or the tories, it's just a virus.

You're making assumptions, we don't know what the child's needs are, besides if any of this is the case the information should be volunteered and certainly should have been cleared from outset.

Incidentally we're talking here about the prime minister's closest adviser, not a single parent living in a high rise who's struggling to manage their autistic child.

If the circumstances are as you describe Cummings would have open access to the resources available within the cabinet machine, at the very least he could have been isolated in a london hotel whilst monitoring his family from a distance.

Just for fun, these are the hoghlights what was in the Spectator, by the Cummings. If it was all fine and above board then why not mention it?:

In a piece published by the Spectator on 25 April about how the magazine’s authors were spending lockdown, Cummings was careful not to mention his trip north when he wrote that “at the end of March and for the first two weeks of April I was ill, so we were both shut in together.”

Meanwhile, in a Spectator article published on 24 April, Cumming’s wife Mary Wakefield wrote about her experiences suffering from coronavirus, where she dreamed of being looked after by Cummings but within 24 hours of her symptoms starting “he said ‘I feel weird’ and collapsed”. She went on to explain that for the next 10 days “Dom couldn’t get out of bed. Day in, day out for ten days he lay doggo with a high fever and spasms that made the muscles lump and twitch in his legs.”

At some point within those 10 days, Cummings drove over 250 miles to his parent’s property near Durham in direct contravention of the UK-wide lockdown regulations that had come into force a week earlier. Wakefield never mentions this trip.

Later in the article, Wakefield talks of “[emerging]from quarantine into the almost comical uncertainty of London lockdown”, carefully avoiding any mention that this emergence involved driving half the length of the country and that their previous experience of lockdown was from a picturesque country farmhouse.

"Once again, for those who are arguing without doing any reading, here are the rules.

Please highlight where you can drive to the home of a vulnerable patent, or even any other location, in case both parents 'might' become ill and require help with childcare:

Exceptions have been made, as an autism parent it was highlighted in the Many groups I'm part of, the exceptions are on the government website

To add, I was told by my sons social worker, as per government guidelines, to make a safety plan for my kids in the event I became too ill to care for them.... It was there, if you knew to look for it. "

What he did was break the rules intended to protect the NHS and population from a deadly virus.

This isn't some abstract concept that Cummings fell victim to..he was a co-creator of the lockdown measures and he failed to have a conversation with his employer before he breached them!

its a sad day when you are expected to make public speeches about your kids disabilities to quieten a baying mob

if you had a private arrangement with your employer because of circumstances at home and it meant you got more flexibility than some of you coworkers , would you think it was appropriate for someone in your team that was pissed off to force your hand into disclosing your personal circumstances to the whole team just to satisfy them ... that’s pretty much what the media have done here but on an even larger scale

If the evidence comes forth that shows he went on further trips unrelated to protecting his family like a jolly then I think like many he is banged to rights. It does not however change the events of the trip to protect his family.

If the evidence is provided I would expect the police to proceed to charge him the same as if you or I had done the same thing

If the circumstances are as you describe Cummings would have open access to the resources available within the cabinet machine, at the very least he could have been isolated in a london hotel whilst monitoring his family from a distance.

its a sad day when you are expected to make public speeches about your kids disabilities to quieten a baying mob

if you had a private arrangement with your employer because of circumstances at home and it meant you got more flexibility than some of you coworkers , would you think it was appropriate for someone in your team that was pissed off to force your hand into disclosing your personal circumstances to the whole team just to satisfy them ... that’s pretty much what the media have done here but on an even larger scale "

I'll say again, if it was the case, state it at the time. This never needed to happen. Why didn't they state he situation and explain to the public at the time why he was making the trip? If it's in the guidelines, just state it, people would of understood. Hey, it may have even highlighted it to parents that did not know.

They did none of this and it simply does not add up. This was all totally avoidable.

If I still lived in London, I'd have done the same as a precaution, instead of leaving it to the point where I my have not been able to drive, creating a very upsetting situation for my Son. When you have child with autism, you function differently, you become conditioned to pre preparing for everything.. A simple trip to shop requires planning on a normal day, one change and your or unplanned event means you need to abort mission because your child will get anxious. Feeding my son in the wrong plate results in him not eating that day... It siumds ridiculous, but that's the life of an autism parent, everything has to got to plan or be familiar, if it's not, all hell breaks loose "

Cummings is de facto a cabinet minister who Johnson regards more highly than some of the elected ones (ask Sajid Javid!).

I doubt very much he would be worrying about what would happen if he were too ill to drive his family anywhere, there would be a high level plan that addressed those eventualities. Driving his family (with Corona symptoms) to Durham from London is actually increasing the problem because it places other vulnerable people and potential carers at high risk (his parents).

Would his autistic son not fall into the vulnerable category to be moved out the house if possible? Finding suitable care for an autistic child is not always as simple as sending them to the closest family member. The medical reason for the travel that Boris refuses to discuss, is the fact that DC son is autistic, which comes with own complexities

yes and no..... because the cummings family are telling has changed.....

the "original" story was that they were going up that where to parents would help .... problem with that is that the parents were in the "self isolation" age group......

so the story was then changed from the "parents" helping them... to the "sister" helping them

basically they travelled 260 miles north on a "hypothetical" situation....

Wheeling out the autistic son now after seeing the public mood? Cynical at best.

People have watched their loved ones die without holding their hands because that was the advice.

They were not alone, nor would they have been of there was actually a problem in London.

He's not the only person who has broken the rules but other government leaders, journalists and the people of Britain can't wait to get on the band wagon and want questions, want him sacked etc. If we want to get over this virus then we should stop acting like kids in a playground and support each other. He was trying to protect his kids/family like anyone else would, but as he is in the position he is everyone wants his blood. I wonder how many others have broke the rules but nothing said to them, and there are loads, thousands of people who have broken the lockdown rule, just look at Blackpool beach, Hyde Park etc on Bank Holiday. Are they all going to get sacked, no. If we worked together as a nation rather than act like kids we might find a way out of the mess we're in

You mean turn a blind eye? To the fact that the single most important advisor to the UK government in the single most important crisis of our lifetime commited a treacherous act? I think the sooner people like him are no longer in the position that they are the easier it will be to work together as a nation.

Had they stayed in London and become to ill how would the kid get to Durham? Bearing in mind the child is autistic, may not drive in certain cars, may only go with certain people

If the circumstances are as you describe Cummings would have open access to the resources available within the cabinet machine, at the very least he could have been isolated in a london hotel whilst monitoring his family from a distance.

its a sad day when you are expected to make public speeches about your kids disabilities to quieten a baying mob

if you had a private arrangement with your employer because of circumstances at home and it meant you got more flexibility than some of you coworkers , would you think it was appropriate for someone in your team that was pissed off to force your hand into disclosing your personal circumstances to the whole team just to satisfy them ... that’s pretty much what the media have done here but on an even larger scale

I'll say again, if it was the case, state it at the time. This never needed to happen. Why didn't they state he situation and explain to the public at the time why he was making the trip? totally avoidable by coming out to tell the public about his private personal circumstances ,

i am completely in awe that your mindset is so entitled that you think he should have been out informing the public of his sons disabilities and travel arrangements because it keep you happy

you can tell when someone is privileged enough to never have had to relate to any special circumstances being made for them

the way i relate to this in my head is a few years back when i had to start seeing a counsellor for my mental health, it meant me disappearing off from work at lunch time once a week and working the rest of the afternoon at home . pretty sure some of my colleagues wanted to know why 9-5 didn't apply to me ad assumed i was off on a jolly, had i had my hand forced to share my personal information with the whole team i would have struggled with that let alone volunteering the information to them all up front just incase they got a bee in their bonnet

i know its not the exact same but really its a similar to you suggesting he should just have come out and announced to everyone that his son has autism and he would be moving him ... it really wasn’t anyones business until the media decided so

"Once again, for those who are arguing without doing any reading, here are the rules.

Please highlight where you can drive to the home of a vulnerable patent, or even any other location, in case both parents 'might' become ill and require help with childcare:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection#if-you-are-living-with-children

"

Undermining the govt's health message has resulted in 2 scientific advisors (one being the Scottish medical officer) resigning before they got pushed. The same should follow here for exactly the same reason.

"It also explains why Dominic Cummings appears kind of abrupt and eccentric.

Greta Thurman attracts a lot of criticism, even from the President of the United States ffs! "

Using Trump? That man would criticise the second coming of Christ if he thought it would make him look good (in his own eyes).

But did he break the rules ?

Boris says he didn't and he certainly wouldn't lie especially over something as critical as this ... Or .... Brexit

Autism is spread across a huge spectrum. In the video where Cummings is being accosted by the press, he is loading a ball and a bike into the back of his car. In my experience this would suggest the child (not toddler, as some keep saying!) is quite high on the spectrum. It’s not quite the same level of vulnerability as a child with severe autism. Funny how the autism excuse is being wheeled out now the shit has hit the fan. As others have said- if he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong why the cloak and daggers? And on top of that, the statement that he doesn’t “care about looking good” just adds salt to the wound. Contemptuous basterd.

Actually he's not wheeled out his autistic child, he's not commented and Boris has said it's not his place.... But because I have an autistic child, so belong to various groups, I know he's child autistic from before all this Covid stuff.... And unlike blood hungry mobsters, I try look deeper Into why someone would do something.... I try go beyond the headlines nd try have empathy first "

We can empathise with anyone fudging the rules because they're dealing with difficult circumstances already but that doesn't justify the action.

If what he's saying is true why was no conversation had with Boris Johnson or the Cabinet Office explaining what the difficulties were and how best to address them?

Whatever the outcome or the reasons, Cummings behaviour shows a significant lack of judgement for a ministerial adviser.

So next time my son loads something into the boot of my car I'll be sure to tell his paediatrician and Send teachers that he's not high on the spectrum, so let's mainstream the little actor, to hell with his sensory issues, and his communication problems..... I mean hell, let's stop disabled people who aren't In wheel chairs from using disabled parking bays, I mean they don't look that disabled

Undermining the govt's health message has resulted in 2 scientific advisors (one being the Scottish medical officer) resigning before they got pushed. The same should follow here for exactly the same reason. "

I am going to PM you if I can. But no I don’t believe those things at all- I’m not quite sure where you think I said that or why you have taken such offence to me suggesting he’s using his child’s disability as an excuse.

London

So the defence is now that due to the son's autism no one else in the world could have helped them other than the parents, and also that the parents could not have been brought to London, by a hired driver if necessary? Which still wouldn't have been ideal as people aren't supposed to travel but would have been better than people with the virus traveling.

Hmm.

And his son is 4 years old..... My son Is 5 and his functioning is at the level of a 2 year old. To yeah physically my son is not a toddler, but he still acts like one and has the mental understanding of a toddler.... I can't actually believe people in this day and age still have the "well they look OK" mentality towards disabilities

Because my son is only a year older than his son, and yes he's not a toddler, but you can't assume his level of "in the spectrum" by looking at him.... My annoyance is not at your suggestion that he's using his sons disability, my annoyance is at your assumption that he can't be that severely autistic because of his he looks, or what toys were being loaded into the boot of the car

Okay- that is not what I said at all, you are taking words out of my mouth. I didn’t say he doesn’t have a disability. I said if he is able to play ball and ride a bike he’s on the higher end of the spectrum. Jeesh!!!!

Had they stayed in London and become to ill how would the kid get to Durham? Bearing in mind the child is autistic, may not drive in certain cars, may only go with certain people

If the circumstances are as you describe Cummings would have open access to the resources available within the cabinet machine, at the very least he could have been isolated in a london hotel whilst monitoring his family from a distance.

its a sad day when you are expected to make public speeches about your kids disabilities to quieten a baying mob

if you had a private arrangement with your employer because of circumstances at home and it meant you got more flexibility than some of you coworkers , would you think it was appropriate for someone in your team that was pissed off to force your hand into disclosing your personal circumstances to the whole team just to satisfy them ... that’s pretty much what the media have done here but on an even larger scale

I'll say again, if it was the case, state it at the time. This never needed to happen. Why didn't they state he situation and explain to the public at the time why he was making the trip? If it's in the guidelines, just state it, people would of understood. Hey, it may have even highlighted it to parents that did not know.

They did none of this and it simply does not add up. This was all totally avoidable.

totally avoidable by coming out to tell the public about his private personal circumstances ,

i am completely in awe that your mindset is so entitled that you think he should have been out informing the public of his sons disabilities and travel arrangements because it keep you happy

you can tell when someone is privileged enough to never have had to relate to any special circumstances being made for them

the way i relate to this in my head is a few years back when i had to start seeing a counsellor for my mental health, it meant me disappearing off from work at lunch time once a week and working the rest of the afternoon at home . pretty sure some of my colleagues wanted to know why 9-5 didn't apply to me ad assumed i was off on a jolly, had i had my hand forced to share my personal information with the whole team i would have struggled with that let alone volunteering the information to them all up front just incase they got a bee in their bonnet

i know its not the exact same but really its a similar to you suggesting he should just have come out and announced to everyone that his son has autism and he would be moving him ... it really wasn’t anyones business until the media decided so"

What, in awe of transparency?? So he didn't say anything and this has happened? It didn't need to happen. So, if it comes out that he was visiting castles, what defence will you mount next?? I can't wait to hear...

Everyone is not a government advisor who sat on the SAGE committee and framed the strategy.

The one who did and broke the rules resigned so as not to undermine the message. As did the Scottish Chief Medical Officer.

Why not Cummings?

Unless you're a cabinet member/adviser who was party to creating the lockdown measures we're all required to adhere to I'm not sure you're comparing like with like.
