my Brother is a virologist/microbiologist dealing with a variety of germs and viruses, his explanation is that the vaccine can't be transported the same way as frozen peas or tinned goods on the back of a truck.I

It requires specialist storage facilities and vehicles equipped to store it and transport it at the extremely low temperatures it needs to ensure its efficacy.

Then there's the problem of storing it until it's needed when it arrives at its destination, not many places have the refrigeration equipment to maintain the low temperatures either.

That's why it's not being distributed like other vaccines and widely available throughout the UK.

As a side thought, did you know £15 million worth of drugs destined for the NHS were destroyed last year?

The vehicles that they were being transported on from Europe were broken into by illegal immigrants trying to get into the uk, as the NHS couldn't be 100% sure that they weren't contaminated they destroyed the entire batch to be sure that they didn't pose a threat to the health of patients.

You already had the vaccine?"

You are not fully protected until you get the 2nd shot and then 7 days after that you get the maximum immunity that it provides. The first shot is only the start of the process. They also tell you it doesn't guarantee full immunity there is a chamce you may catch it but will lesser symptoms.

I got my first injection this week will get my 2nd first week in Jan. I just had a but of a sore arm for a day or so that was it.

My understanding is that the vaccine doesn't stop you catching covid, nor does it stop you passing it on, it should stop you being very ill from it, although you need the second dose and 7 days before it is fully effective.

Nevertheless, sorry to hear that.

Got mine on Monday, no after affects at all apart from a sore arm the next day. Lucky to get mine, I work for an NHS Trust that was given some at very short notice at a centre just up the road. I'm just in the priority over 60 category and so I was offered a last minute cancellation at the end of the day where it was a case of give it to someone or bin it because it can't be put back in the fridge. I'm feeling very lucky but a bit guilty.

It’s not just the distribution issues though, we may have 4million of the Pfizer vaccinations ordered but the last I heard was that we have only received 800,000 at the moment. Most likely nearly all of these have been used by now.

We desperately need the Astra Zeneca vaccine to be approved as soon as possible. Vaccine production is a major issue, Pfizer reckon that at best they can produce 100m doses by next June. That’s only 40% of the US population, I wonder if we will get any more during that time.

Whilst the pfizer vaccine needs long term storage at ultra low temperatures, it can be defrosted and kept in a fridge for 5days.

Once it is diluted, you then have 6 hours to use it although you can't transport it at this stage.
