We have been reading and hearing about the numbers for almost a year now. The numbers are people. And the sooner people who ignore the rules learn the better. I’ve know 3 through work who have died and countless who have contracted it. I’ve been lucky. I work in what they call an essential service in the food industry. The bulk of the time I am on the road but since last March I have been working indoors due to risk. I still meet people on a daily basis within my role but with the right protection and taking precautions we can get through this. However this lockdown is a bloody joke. My journey to work each morning is just as busy as if it was a normal

Working day pre COVID and as for what’s happening on here. Yes we are told not to meet. But the amount of people with meet me now and let’s meet is ridiculous

Does anyone actually believe the figure is really 100,000?

The reason for death being labelled as Covid is not really the truth in the vast majority of the cases.

With so many of the deaths being the very elderly they were nearing the end of the lives sadly and it has been far more straight forward to attach the Covid scenario to their unfortunate demise rather than to look beyond.

Those who were elderly and many of those who were not were suffering from under lying illness which may have meant that their lives were in extreme danger regardless of the pandemic.

The 100,000 figure, I believe, is a misnomer and probably is borne out of a fear message propagated by Government and health officials, banded by the media and is more of an 'ease of death certificate information' rather actual fact.

Let's try to get some perspective and whilst any death is very distressing I do not feel that this figure is a true representation.

Only my opinion as I have no way to back up what I have said

why would Johnson make his own position more precarious by over estimating the figure.. makes no sense

it's a bit like AIDS in 80s you don't die of it rather with it.. and because of behavior associated with it

Ok. What exactly happened in 2020 to make the excess deaths spike way above the expected normal? If all these people were going to pop their clogs anyway, the rate would be similar to other years.

Like others, I believe 100k is an underestimate, and obviously it also doesn't account for medium to long term effects/disability.

Generally in argument the person making the extraordinary claim is the one who's required to provide the proof.

"A government embarking on its prize Brexit project, who keep going on about how world beating they are, have inflated death figures for some reason" is a pretty extraordinary claim.

I am not of the opinion it has simply been exaggerated but that it has perhaps been a label misused in some circumstances.

For example, if a person of 94 who was not in perfect health suddenly died, could this be caused by Covid or would that person have died at that time regardless?

Many elderly people die of flu, respiratory issues or pneumonia, vivid happens to be prevalent but may not necessarily be the actual cause.

I fear that you folks misunderstand... I am claiming nothing and I am simply giving my opinion.

Yours is what you have and this is mine

I am comfortable with your view and I am satisfied with mine

How we choose to evaluate things in our minds and air them freely is of our own volition

I shall now return to my pot noodle and continue my impressionist crocheting of the bayeux tapestry

The personal opinion is whether you choose to believe them

If everybody believed every figure that was fed to them or was inclined to be duped into accepting every data, statistic or poll then we would become hollow unthinking robots

Many figures have undoubtedly been manipulated or adjusted to give implied details that appear valid

I simply hold a view that is different to yours, it is a perfectly reasonable stance to take. Thank you

Thank you"

Hence the questions about why would they lie. We're asking why you don't trust the source.

I'm perfectly aware that believing everything blindly is a bad idea, but to claim it's wrong because maybe someone died randomly and they were added to the stats is a bit... implausible.

"I had word today that my cousin's husband passed away last night from Covid. This is a truly horrible virus, it doesn't care who it infects and kills. Please, please. Please... Follow the rules, stay safe and do your bit to keep others safe."

I’m so sorry to hear your news. This virus is just awful. X

Numbers may be inaccurate and other countries have perhaps understated the deaths, but people are still dead! People love to blame the government but in reality it is people that spread the virus, sometimes unavoidably, sometimes stupidly.

If all the global numbers are accurate then the question is why are we so high in the death rankings? Our health service, although strained, is still one of the largest employers in the world. Are we really that unhealthy as a nation that we are more susceptible?

Look to restrictions/ policies. Delayed lockdowns, inadequate protection for workers, restricted access to tests early (plus a limited symptom list now), ongoing bullshit with care homes, masking and bubble policy in schools, eat out to help out, group of six, the Cummings effect, and more.

I appreciate delays will have had a detrimental effect but ours are so spectacularly bad there must be other issues

It's a whole combination of issues, some mentioned, some will be unknown. International travel not sufficiently curtailed anywhere quick enough. In 1917 during the last pandemic, how long would it have taken someone to get from Wuhan to the UK? At sea from Shanghai it's around 50 days without stopping. Today, Wuhan, about 15 hours...

There was a piece on Newsnight last night which gave a really good precis with regards to why our numbers are where they are..

Poverty is a determining factor, health, age all play a part too..

There was a GP who has worked in Fleetwood, Lancs which is a deprived area who said in the last 30 years he's seen a decline in health in his area despite the advances made medicines and treatment wise in that time..

There was a report last year which said life expectancy was slowing down in parts of the north.

Obviously through a myriad of factors but the change has been over the last decade.

Think they have already said areas of high poverty are hit disproportionately during the pandemic.

Think the difference between affluent and deprived areas was someone in the latter is 2.5 times more likely to catch covid than the former..

That we have in a country if such wealth such disparities in health is shameful..

After sifting through all the above. God. Some went way off target

It’s simple. The reports say 100000 linked to COVID deaths. Today as we stand taking in the past few days it is actually 102,254. But I’ll tell you one thing. There could be thousands that havnt been recorded and many more to be added. Back home in Ireland. Unfortunate the daily average is around 49 deaths per day with approx 2000 new cases each day. Now with a lower population than the uk it’s still a high number but it shows that with a proper lockdown and strict enforcement we can help bring the numbers down.

So all you lot who have meet me now all over your profiles. Please please please. Go fucking jump off a cliff already

I hope we - those who take this seriously - can pull together and protect ourselves and each other. Far too many have died needlessly. Far too many are suffering long term health effects.

I will keep doing my best to protect those around me. The more of us who do, the more of us will make it through.
