Just read an article on BBC news website regarding COVID and Tanzania, that quite frankly beggars belief.

The President John Magufuli and his government have declared Tanzania Covid free (despite cases and deaths), and have no plans to introduce a vaccine program.

More, they have said the vaccine is harmful, and that all people need to do is use steam inhalation and eat fresh vegetables to remain healthy.

Think Tanzania are going to be in their worldwide isolated wilderness for a long long time to come.

Didn’t Belarus say all you need was Saunas and vodka?

If you look at the figures, with 21 deaths into total, perhaps they have bigger things to worry about. Probably something to do with population density, lack of fat people and warm weather. If the R numbers stays below 1 they will never have to worry.

Yes they did and are now wondering why Latvia has closed its borders to them

That's assuming the death total figures announced are to be believed, given that the government insist they are covid free despite ongoing cases and deaths.

Back at the start of this fun filled pandemic I watched a news report from Russia where people in a packed church stated that they were safe from Covid because god will protect them.

I love science of crazy!!!!

It's tragic that people with great powe aren't accepting responsibility, when spreading lies and also possibly rejecting the vaccine.

I don't know their stats and hope that infections remain very low but ignorance is not helpful or supportive. There is a strong case for leaders who have caused harm, including deaths upon their citizens, to face the strongest penalties internationally.

Accepting the accuracy of "21 deaths" within such a climate of government sponsored denial is irrational.

However you're right in saying that Tanzania may have a population that is less at risk of severe disease. Given how the virus spread via international travel most of sub-saharan Africa as a whole may have had a degree of protection from not having as many "international travel hubs".

I have no doubt that infected people had traveled there from China and Europe end of 2019/ early 2020 but no where near the levels of Europe/Asia/N. American hotspots before COVID was first identified.

International travel is down worldwide especially intercontinental travel so maybe Tanzania can afford to be so lax whereas many in Asia and Europe can't.

I remember seeing the same report, and if i remember the person who was interviewed outside the church said she would be safe because god would protect them - was a nurse !

Absolutely, i have few friends traveled there in last few months because there is no restrictions at all, life goes as usual and first thing you have to do when land is thrown face mask in the bin, enjoy tropical paradise and forget about everything for a few days

Population in Tanzania is arround 60 millions..that's very close to the UK population. They recorded just 509 cases and 21 deaths....not sure why anyone would be surprised that they announced the country covid free...

Possibly because as in the report, a man that complained of dry cough, loss of smell and taste, then a fever, died within a week. Other cases similar also died... But the government refuse to test because the country is "covid free". As for claimed numbers... Well believe what you wish.

Tanzania, like most African countries, has a very small elderly population, as they die of many other things that we in the rich west don’t even consider. Malaria being a case in point. If it affected people here in the same way it would be a national scandal. Covid is a rich country disease

Just read this to SS. He's worked in Tanzania - poverty, over crowding in cities/towns, malaria and HIV rate of 8% overall (double that in the capital). Not a good picture overall but, hopefully, free vaccines that can be delivered with an effective cold chain will make a difference as otherwise we'll be dealing with a Tanzania strain in the UK in the next couple of years.

Yes I'm sure we could be Covid free too if we just... pretend we don't have Covid. Yay?
