Obviously the word us a buzz word in certain media, but what actually constitutes a pandemic?

Bodies in the street? The crematorium working every day, or even 24/7?

Interesting what Roger Daltrey says ...

Excellent, so the article discussed specifically the definition of pandemic influenza, as opposed to seasonal epidemics of influenza.

This is not influenza (5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for someone to tell me "Covid is just flu though" )

As it says, “A pandemic is defined as ‘an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people’.”

(An epidemic is a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease within a community / country at a particular time.)

It doesn’t (necessarily) have anything to do with mortality.

Mt understanding of the word "pandemic" is that it is an epidemic that has broken out everywhere, rather than in just a limited number of places.

It doesn't really say anything about how nasty the disease is, just that it spreads easily and gets to all countries (or maybe is just in danger of getting to all countries).

For instance, I'm sure it would be possible to have a pandemic of athletes foot if there was a really easily spread strain of fungus going around, but there probably wouldn't be many people dying of it (millions of manky feet in every country though!!).

Covid though is not just "pandemic", it is "deadly pandemic".

Best to stick with dictionaries, especially medical dictionaries. Or WHO classifications, where you'll have globally recognised criteria. Keep things simple. No need for complications
