Can't understand why anyone would want to go to the pub anyway. Full of people, and selling overpriced food and drink.

It's what happens when people have been forcibly split up and told to stay at home for too long. It comes as no surprise that it went to some peoples heads a little, both in the pubs and in the shops

Slightly off topic, but isn't it strange that the virus is intelligent enough to only attack 30 people at a funeral or 15 at a wedding in a church and completely ignore the hundreds queuing and going into the closing down sales at Debenhams in Manchester..

If we're going to have mistakes to learn from, it's better to have them in a controlled manner than is limited, by virtue of being outdoors, which restricts infections. If the next steps get delayed, due to rising infections, it will help to prevent bigger rises from being indoors with others

It just comes down to economics really.

The closing down sales (and shopping in general) contribute more to the economy than guests at a wedding do.

Furlough and vaccines gotta be paid for somehow.

Went down for 1600 met up, socially distanced, with friends and family for drinkies and dinner ... was totally awesome!! Much needed ...

Noone broke any rules ... everyone was brilliant and happy! So many happier people today!

The nit pickers will always nit pick ... I for one happily and absolutely love socialising and have no problems with any of the rules but equally have no problems with anyone who is antisocial too ... life is way too short to waste being unhappy (me or you!)

people are also queued up outside (safer) and dont know each other so you expect them to stay a bit more distanced (that might have been daft since they are so eager to get inside but someone from the store should have been controlling the queues)

at a wedding its all inside, all folk that know each other , all happy celebrating hugs galore oh and probably booze loosening everyones inhibitions - rules out the window

I think some of it depends on the pub management too.

I didn't go but spoke to a friend who did.

He said there were some people standing and moving between tables to chat and the landlord came out and told them to stay at their own table or leave.

The landlords don't want closing down again so the decent ones will do their best to ensure rules are followed.

It impacts the staff emotionally too. When you feel like all you're doing is nagging people you have fuck all job satisfaction and being told to lighten up by those you're reminding of the rules can also make ya feel quite worthless. You see, when people are behaving in a way that could get you closed down, what they're actually saying to me is "fuck it, I don't care if you lose your job, and then your home coz you can't pay your rent because of me, I'M more important"

Isn’t it strange that some people don’t have understand arbitrary numbers have to be drawn somewhere else it would have to remain zero for weddings and zero for shopping queues... Queues outside are far less likely to be super spreader events than is the case with family and friends in prolonged close contact and mingling around at weddings. In a queue you could possibly infect the person in front and the person behind but at a wedding of 30 for 12 hours you could very easily and unknowingly infect 20 guests and some staff as well . The health advisors would rather we had no weddings or queues until we have 80% with both doses of vaccine. It’s a difficult line between minimising Covid deaths and minimising other deaths that result as an effect of a broken economy, more suicides and reduced healthcare provision due to the black hole in tax revenues... we just need people to use a bit of common sense, unfortunately it’s far less common than it’s label suggests

Mmm.

Policies are required which manage need, risk, human emotions/psychology, etc.

Whether they're sensible or not, to say "the virus is less contagious at a funeral because Boris said so" is a profound, perhaps wilful, misunderstanding of public policy.

its not less contagious , but public policy isnt made on only contagion data - the funerals and weddings have a compassion element in there too and the shop queues have an economic

lots of complicated competing objectives that need to be balanced against each other, personally funerals i get - its a last chance to say goodbye and a step in the grieving process

weddings on the other hand - well you are agreeing to spend your whole life together anyway - forever is a long time , does it really matter that much if you wait a few more months to do it with a party in front of people - because thats all it is really, a party

Oh no, I agree.

But people mock the policies because there's an arbitrary line. I mean... There has to be?

Why is a seventeen year old limited in consumption of alcohol the day before their 18th birthday, but the day after they can do what they like? Are they suddenly significantly more mature and no longer childlike, impulsive, etc? It's clearly a nonsense - maturation is a spectrum - but a line has to be drawn.

Same here.

Penny for a pound that the pub punters would simply ignore all of the last years' lockdown restrictions and revert to do whatever they want. Also doesn't surprise me that the landlords did nothing and turned a blind eye to the rules governing social distancing as long as their tills were ringing with money going in.

Just hope the same individuals don't bleat and moan and then throw their teddies out the pram if we have a third wave hit us.

The virus isn't over, but the large number of deaths and serious illness caused by it is.

Most of those who would most likely suffer severe illness are now protected by vaccines, so we need to now get back to normality.

The issue being community transmission we are at a position of fine balance some boroughs of London today have had a surge. You really want a third lockdown? It’s not about you it’s about enabling the business’ to stay open by showing a teeny tiny bit of restraint now not acting like idiots let who’ve never seen a pint before. It’s so short sighted to not play by the rules and utterly self centred. I’m sure the landlords won’t thank you when they’re locked down for Christmas again should the worst happen. Just grow up a teeny tiny little bit and try and think of the bigger picture.

Not sure if you aware but the vaccine is very much in play now, all the elderly and vulnerable are vaccinated. Also deaths are completely on the floor. Ah yes, the vaccine that the majority of staff in pubs haven't had yet. How considerate of you.

Yes, go out if you want. But follow the rules and don't forget, those strangers you're telling people to "mix with" may actually be really happy keeping a safe distance from other people..... coz that's what they're expecting, with it being the rules and all.

It’ll be the fourth lockdown actually, but who’s counting eh!

What are you afraid of? I keep hearing this ‘surge in cases’ but I’m afraid cases mean absolutely nothing. Check the hospital admissions and deaths, both of which are very low. Whenever we come out of lockdown, case's will go up. That's how global pandemics work. At some point we will have to crack on. And avoiding the high street is gonna do didly squat, except cause more jobs.

Again. Mix with strangers. What are you meaning by this?

Are you a landlord, licensee or government official who's doing the checks to make sure premises are enforcing the rules?

I know when we opened for those brief months between lockdowns we and other sites were getting checked and failure to comply meant closure. So nah, I don't think the landlords will be too chuffed at that.

4th lockdown?

We had March- July then October- now.

That's 2 is it not?

Sorry, I took it the wrong way.

I work in hospitality and people telling others to mix with strangers and thinking it's ok leaves me with my head in my hands. All it takes is 1 person getting lax or mixing with someone who's not on their table and whoosh. Staff are seen as not complying with or enforcing the rules and jobs lost. It's unfair on the staff it really is. They're doing a job.

Wasn't it just 3 days at Xmas where you could mix?

It's all a blur now, I'm going off being closed at work.

It was tiered wasn't it, so some came out more and others didn't. My area was firmly in the didn't zone.

I dont think anyone's saying don't socialise and enjoy... I think there's little extra required in terms of effort... Maybe 1 or 2 percent difference As far as follow the rules... Be careful... Help the businesses stay open and the staff stay healthy and perhaps even enjoy their time serving you.... Or as is very clearly evidenced in some venues, some people not following the rules... That are put their for everyone's benefit. Just a little more effort... Go spend money and socialise and enjoy... Just a little effort to follow the rules... That's all it takes.

I know some places were open at Xmas and through December, we weren't coz we were checking the tier changes not knowing what the bloody hell was going on. Our rotas got put up a few times for if we did drop to tier 2 but it didn't happen.

That are put their for everyone's benefit. Just a little more effort... Go spend money and socialise and enjoy... Just a little effort to follow the rules... That's all it takes. "

Exactly that

"And? What’s the problem with people out having fun and socialising? Heaven forbid they should actually mix with people outside their household. Not sure if you aware but the vaccine is very much in play now, all the elderly and vulnerable are vaccinated. Also deaths are completely on the floor. Get out, enjoy yourself, mix with strangers it’ll do you good.

.... insert face palm emoji

Haha! If you don’t wanna go out, don’t! But let people earn a living and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves. You manage your own health and asses the risk... then do as you please.

Sigh you really don’t get it do you.....

I get it perfectly well.... As I originally stated, the vaccine is in play, the elderly and the vulnerable are vaccinated... deaths are on the floor. I think it may be you that doesn’t ‘get it’. Have a bit of faith in the vaccine and If you don’t wanna go out then don’t. Simple.

Hmmmm... I wasn’t aware of a surge in pub and bar staff being hospitalised last year? You don’t get many 70 odd year olds working in the pub. I’m not saying folk should be careless, I’m saying get out and enjoy yourself, mix with strangers, it’s good for you.

Yes it would be the 4th one, it is hard to keep up.

Going to the pub, sitting near people you don’t know! Mixing with strangers.... Taking in the atmosphere, your know living life n that... it’s nothing sinister, just people out having a good time. I see no problem at all with that, I’m all for it.

It’ll be the fourth lockdown actually, but who’s counting eh!

What are you afraid of? I keep hearing this ‘surge in cases’ but I’m afraid cases mean absolutely nothing. Check the hospital admissions and deaths, both of which are very low. If the vaccine does as we have been told, it would appear we have nothing to worry about. I’m sure the landlords wouldn’t want you to ‘show some restraint’.... but if you want to then that’s fine.. I wouldn’t call you selfish for it though.... and I wouldn’t call the people out enjoying themselves idiots. Life is good! Enjoy it x

Sure some people just use this forum to incite trouble. Guidelines are being broken all over, it’s going to happen. No need to run straight onto Fab and tell everyone about it.

I agree, I went to pub yesterday, social distancing, no one moving between tables and bar service. Only able to go inside was for loo and one way in one way out

Just before I leave for the pub...

It seems like many debates there is much common ground.

One side is saying "great the pubs are open let's go and enjoy and follow the rules while we are there...but not a huge problem if a few are broken"

And the other is saying.. "great pubs are open let's go an enjoy them but be mindful of the rules... And follow the rules as it does matter to others if they are broken"

Lots of common ground.

let's go to the pub in the sunshine and follow the rules.

Well if they’re breaking guidelines and not caring about bar staff, landlords the economy or businesses waiting to open them believe me utterly self centred is really a tame way of describing them.

Simple.

Enjoy it x

I’m not sure if you can’t read or are deliberately being obtuse ......

You read it back and tell me...

Can’t tell you what I really think or I’ll get banned

Haha! Yeh I had noticed you are very quick to get personal with people! Life’s to short for all that. Enjoy x

Well let’s be honest it’s very personal to the people who you’re upsetting with your views sooooo back at ya.

Oh but what about the people you are upsetting with your views? There are two sides to this argument... and just because it’s your side doesn’t make it the ‘right’ side.

My views are follow the guidelines be considerate of others and don’t be a selfish twat. Who would be upset by that?

Maybe some of the people you have labelled ‘idiots’, ‘twats’ or ‘utterly self centred’ might be upset. After all, what are they doing wrong? Going out and having a good time, Enjoying life, meeting new people. It’s hardly that bad is it? Live and let live I say.

Well if they’re breaking guidelines and not caring about bar staff, landlords the economy or businesses waiting to open them believe me utterly self centred is really a tame way of describing them. Live abs let live isn’t really applicable when what you do literally affects others lives and livelihoods. "

Breaking the guidelines? They are out, are they not allowed out of their houses? should they be hiding in their house so they don’t pass the virus on to someone that is seriously at risk from Covid? Oh hang on... aren’t they all vaccinated...

As I said before, you don’t have to go out if you don’t want to...but you really shouldn’t be so angry at the folk that do.

This is where Police or local councils just go in and close the places down until they get there house in order. Landlords soon start adhering to rules qith threatened closure.

"Hugging and a Kissing in the back row"?

With Fred? Or is that before your time?! "

Fred was in the back seat of a car with 7 little girls (hopefully I'm allowed to say that) while the driver was being told to keep his eyes on the driving.

Who was in the back row at the movies, I'm not sure. That one was after my time!

The OP said "all restrictions went out the window".

So yes, heaven forbid indeed.

Maybe we can get our lives back gradually and end this mess if people behave

That’s actually incorrect, you’re not allowed to sit with people you don’t know, it doesn’t say anything about sitting near people you don’t know. Getting out of the house, being with other people is all good. I’m not saying go and sit on their knee, slobber all over them, just mix, be with others outside your bubble, it’s great.... and no doubt it’s a big help to the lonely people in this world, perhaps suffering mental health issues, struggling with everything that’s going on and spending the last, god knows how many months, in isolation. Getting out and seeing and mixing with others must feel wonderful.

Good on them, life is for living!!

People bending or breaking rules = must not be criticised, living their lives. Only ones who understand or appreciate freedom.

People following the rules to benefit others = bed wetting cowards.

I wouldn’t call you selfish for it though.... and I wouldn’t call the people out enjoying themselves idiots. Life is good!

The thread is about pubs and whether guidelines are adhered to ... someone up thread said he hadn’t as he watched men chatting up his wife and found it hot. Going out is fabulous going to the pub is fabulous! Putting your kicks ahead of anything else and breaking guidelines isn’t. I really don’t know what you’re referring too no one said going out wasn’t allowed or to be discouraged. The inflammatory language you’re using to try and insinuate that people being careful are hiding is just ridiculous.

So to state again as you appear to be missing the point .. going out and adhering to guidelines = good going out ignoring guidelines abs social distancing putting lives and livelihoods at risk = bad

Couldn’t agree more, don’t know what all the fuss was about. I didn’t mention anything about chatting up a bird (however this can still be done from a 2 metre difference). I’m just happy people are out enjoying our new found freedoms.

As I said before it would help if you read the thread properly without jumping to conclusion and making accusations "

Going to the pub, sitting near people you don’t know! Mixing with strangers.... Taking in the atmosphere, your know living life n that... it’s nothing sinister, just people out having a good time. I see no problem at all with that, I’m all for it.

The Government do, you are not meant to be sitting next to people you don't know.

As I say, according to the Government you are not meant to be mixing with people other than the people you went with so no mixing tables etc"

Bit of a grey area this, you would have to define mixing? I would class sitting in a pub with strangers as mixing.

Simple.

It’ll be the fourth lockdown actually, but who’s counting eh!

What are you afraid of? I keep hearing this ‘surge in cases’ but I’m afraid cases mean absolutely nothing. Check the hospital admissions and deaths, both of which are very low. Not in the context of your post that I quoted no. If you want to read the guidelines they are available online. If you act like you say you are in the post I quoted then you would be breaking covid rules and the pub could get a big fine

If however I read it wrong, then sitting in a pub in a party of 6 or less people that you entered with and no mixing with other tables then that is not against rules

couple, us we him her.

Spare a thought for those poor souls who live near pub's.

We just walked round to our local co-op to get some cat food and past our local pub.

Must have been 20 or so people sitting outside from the noise honestly thought that there was double that.

Then you are all on the same page and I am not sure why there is so much angst.

People are saying, going out, enjoy yourself, stick to the rules including not mixing with others and socially distancing = being responsible.

Go out, mix with strangers you didn't go with, don't socially distance etc = irresponsible and selfish

Who was in the back row at the movies, I'm not sure. That one was after my time!"

The issue was using the words "mix with strangers"

It seems that was the wrong turn of phrase, as would have made it much clearer if you'd said "crack on and follow the guidelines"

well then perhaps you were being purposefully obtuse, because repeatedly people replied saying sure go out enjoy the pubs but breaking the rules is selfish and you just kept repeating nah get out and enjoy yourself, mix with strangers its good for you and the landlords will love it( paraphrased obviously)

maybe you were enjoying riling folk up knowing what you said could be vaguely interpreted either way who knows , but if you genuinely meant what you now say you would have had no reason to be debating with multiple people who also think and were saying exactly that

no bee in my bonnet or offence here , but if we include me i read at least 5 folk that “misconstrued” what you said, so maybe the issue was with what you said being repeatedly the opposite of what you now say you meant - other people cannot be expected to take the opposite meaning from the words you put on the page and predict an alternative meaning

“mixing with strangers”, “meeting new people is it really all that bad” , “just trust the vaccine anyone at risk has had it” ... to me you knew exactly what you were saying so if its not what you meant it had to be trolling

They get those Costa coffee loyalty cards.... Stamped for every visit. You have to wait till a regular "moves on" to get in.

Agreed. And now people are just picking quotes out, with no context, and choosing to lecture me. That’s fine, I’m a big boy and I stand by everything I have said in this thread.

"

To be fair it wasn't out of context, it was your post in it's entirety.

I can't figure out whether your words came across totally different than you wanted them to or that you are backtracking but please don't imply people are picking on you. challenging what you said is not picking on you.

How utterly depressing..

The wait for the seat in the corner to pass on to the latest old codger sat on their throne supping half a mild which lasted hours ..

Good. It'll stop infiltrators whod be gone again as soon as their usual haunt reopens leaving the local for the regulars who keep the place going day in day out year after year rather than them being kicked out.

"Back to the OP....went out to a pub with friends last night...had a table allocated....no one was jumping between tables...very well organised and a very relaxed evening. There was also a visit from a council official who's job is to ensure the rules are being followed and the have the power to close any establishment that is breaking the rules so its in the pub's interest to follow them."

i think most places will be like this , its not in their interest to flaunt the rules and end up closed again , there will be a few that are a bit dodge in terms of letting people mix but the minority i reckon ,

if anything it will be the back to someones house for an after party because its too early to go home crew that cause a spike and pubs will probably get the blame

a bit like the gym in january, and shops just before christmas , and restaurants on folks birthdays, flights and holiday parks in the school holidays - im sure the list goes on of places that enjoy seasonal boosts to trade rather than just regulars

Manchester (she/her)

So, in summary:

If you want to go to the pub and you obey the rules, have fun.

If you want to break the rules: this is why we can't have nice things

Just a thought... Attracting customers is presumably one of every business owners main goals?

My impression of pubs being horribly unwelcoming places where you're only welcome if your face fits is obviously correct. Good job I don't want to go to one then! Nor can my wheelchair get into many of them and not one person has ever cared on nights out (apart from me).
