I think you're right... We are doing OK in our country at the moment. But given how porous our border control is.. We are a long way from out of this.. We have a long autumn and winter ahead of us. Unless we have more effective test and trace and quarantine I think we still have a risk of bringing it back from our travels.

The vaccine does seem to be working for now so need to manufacture test distribute and administer best part of 5 million more doses of that plus boosters.

Lastly, for what it's worth... Thoughts and prayers to whatever being to help Brazil and India populations... It looks truly awful.

Lagos is its own entity. I was moved fro VI to Ghana as the company policies changed.

I was supposed to return last month however there is a hold on STR's within our company.

Not complaining I could be back down PH lol

That's true, most countries in West Africa have handled the pandemic a lot better. Quicker reactions and effective measures.

What is happening in India is tragic, but there government needs to step up and help, they are not poor, they have a space program and are planning on building their own version of the iss, why are they not putting that on the back burner and spending the money on something to actually help their citizens

Things will only improve if the 2 courses of action are taken -

Social restrictions, including lockdown type measures here.

Vaccinations.

Things can get worse, without these, including by having huge levels of infections fuelling greater numbers of mutations, some of which may be much more of a severe impact to life as we've known it, a greater range of the types of people infected and getting very ill, disabled or losing lives, increasing infectivity of the virus and more.

India's population is enormous and thus vaccine productivion for them will take a long time. Without them, only strict adherence to limited contact between people, alongside mask use etc, is all that will limit the spread of the virus. It certainly needs the appropriate engagement of leadership, which has been missing in Brazil and was in the USA. In the meantime, it requires massive health provision offerings, above the scope of the country.

As we've seen in the UK, some people resist the very measures that help to stop the UK from becoming like India and Brazil. Some still want us to stop all restrictions now, come what may. We're fortunate that some of our measures have paid off, with sufficient agreement by the population to face restrictions and to have a vaccine for the common good.

The future is uncertain, in part due to the complexity of governments, population levels and the ability of the virus to mutate. Ee can each do what is in the best interests of our fellow citizens and not just to pretend that only we matter.

I don't think they were ever actually built. They made prototypes etc and invested in the idea but no production of them. I doubt they'd get many made quickly enough to help India any time soon.

It's not black and white... Like most of life it's shades of gray... Below a few items to reflect on...

The report said, "India's economy is the fifth largest in the world with a GDP of $2.94 trillion, overtaking the UK and France in 2019 to take the fifth spot". The UK economy amounts to $2.83 trillion and France with $2.71 trillion. ... Since 1995, the country's nominal GDP has jumped more than 700 per cent"

As was also the case in 2018, only five OECD member countries reached the UN target of spending 0.7 percent of gross national income on international development: Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the UK. The average across OECD members is 0.3 percent.

The United States, Germany, and the UK were the largest donors in dollar terms, representing half the total. Despite periodic calls for reductions in aid from the White House, US aid spending dropped by only 0.4 percent.

And...

Although the UK does not technically send aid to India, in 2018 the Government announced plans to provide £98million to invest in technical enterprises over the next two years. Despite India being on course to become one of the third largest economies by 2030, the UK sent the money to help stimulate jobs in India. While underfunded research initiatives received the funding, the Indian government has announced the launch of the Shukrayaan orbiter.

Just to give some perspective on India. the population of India is 23x that of the UK. The UKs highest daily death toll for Covid was 1325, Indias would need to be 30475 to equate to that on a pro rata population basis. Currently they are only on 2624 deaths per day.

So no it is not getting out of hand. Just more fear porn from the news!!

Apart from they are woefully undercounting the numbers of infected and dead. If you die in the streets or at home, especially if you're too poor to have been seen by any medical professional, you aren't being counted in India. I think the funeral pyres, which are a very clear outward example of the sudden jump in deaths, demonstrates that. Many medics in India are saying the same about under counting.

If it's not that bad, why are multiple countries sending medical aid, why is the Indian Government ramping up oxygen production, why are people being turned away from hospitals and why are railway carriages, sports stadiums and other facilities being turned into makeshift treatment facilities? For fun?? What is being burnt on all the extra funeral pyres, if not additional dead people?

When a country is shipping in bulk containers of oxygen, when the death rate is being deliberately grossly under reported, when the price of any medication or anything associated with the issue has been allowed to be profiteered from to the score of ten times, when the reporting of the issue is blocked by the government then it's bad..

To say it's 'not bad' is either naive, ignorance or something sinister..

Similar in just one facility in Uttar Pradesh, 94 bodies cremated and the state said only 3 were covid..

The actual deaths per capita are much lower than the UK.

Recent politics and huge reduction of pricing for rural economy, of which 53% of the population live in the countryside, has dispossessed a huge number of people who have migrated to cities but this doesn’t explain the rise in cases which came six months later. New variant, possibly.

Newry Down

The amazing thing about India is that it functions; albeit extraordinarily chaotically.

It is astonishing that famine does not occur more frequently.

Crucially, administrative government is utterly disorganised; the rate of Covid infections is much much worse, as are the number of deaths, than being publicly reported.

It will remain the epicentre of Covid for a long time.

Consider the logistical nightmare of vaccinating 1,400,000,000 people, and the impossibility of locking down such a country.

I wouldn't normally watch Andrew Marr. But just hopped on and surprisingly enough the topic was India and covid. While we twiddle our thumbs and trot out the usual bollocks about how there is no evidence it is dangerous blablabla and yet the Indian variant is killing 4k a day in India.. I'm not sure why there is even a discussion. I digress.

But the point was... Whilst we have a healthy scepticism of politicians and that the India trade deal delayed putting India on the Red list (what does that actually even mean? Given we have pretty much zero policing and enforcing of any of these rules... They may as well put them on the red carpet list.)

20k passengers from India arrived in the 4 days from April 19 to 23rd.

Bangladesh and Pakistan, with lower numbers had been put on the mythical red list 3 weeks previously.

Now I'm not one to call for resignations but some fucker better pay for this. Its scandalous.

Any theories why the daily new case figures for India have started to come down again so soon? I believed (and still do) that they are still a long way from herd immunity and I expected further weeks of cases doubling every few days. What’s changed?

It doesn't help when millions of idiots go to a river to worship fake gods and out themselves at risk. If you can't keep yourself safe and do the right thing then they shouldn't be receiving the help they currently are.

Same as aid for them. Billions sent to help poverty etc and yet they have their own nuclear program and space programs. Bollox to them is my attitude.

"Reading this I do wonder how meany have travelled India

Personal space just isn't something Indian people have the luxury of or understand.

Basic hygiene is often misunderstood and not practiced too.

Whatever money and resources that are being sent over there won't be going to the people that really need it.

Don't believe everything you see and read - especially if it's on the BBC

Where will the money and resources go instead?"

I don't know - but the Needy rarely benefit.

It's a very corrupt place.

Why did they not close the Borders earlier with India, when they knew abput this variant. Boris and his crew are so incompetent. And now again pehaps everyone is going to suffer yet again with our daily lives.

I think the idea that we simply give India money and nothing back in return, I find quite hard to believe.

No doubt there are plenty of deals going on behind the scenes.

Prat Handcock, stood up in the commons the other day slimming his way out of the lack of government action on India. Saying travel restrictions came in when they knew about the new variant. Complete bull. Should have put India on the red list same time as Pakistan and Bangladesh. But no, just because Boris is trying to set up a trade deal he is prepared to scupper the whole nations health and wellbeing again just to justified lies to the nation again. The bloke is just toxic to this country and population.

In response to my post, somebody chose to send me a pm... Of a picture of something purporting to be about a new world order. Presumably because the phrase new world order has been bastardised in the same way as the word gay has been changed from meaning happy to meaning homosexual.

New World order... Curtis Mayfield was singing about this 30 years ago. And it wasn't anything sinister.

They were faster and more strict in some respect like curfews but people are less compliant, and much more quickly went back to normal , in Lagos other than the city/VI 30 million people basically ignored advice and carried in as normal

Lagos is its own entity. I was moved fro VI to Ghana as the company policies changed.

I was supposed to return last month however there is a hold on STR's within our company.

A little late but here in support of some of the comments in this thread this article reporting on sage and other science behind our choices of border control...

Some snippets...

In Feb 21 50k passengers flew between UK and India.

On one day.. May 19th... 4 flights from India.. Now on red no fly list... Landed at Heathrow only (add other hubs Manchester, Glasgow etc for more flights)

Direct flights from many Red list countries are banned except for India Pakistan Bangladesh and Kenya.

Just under half of people with the India variant of concern in England had been travelling, according to a 13 May briefing from Public Health England.

One study found the virus was introduced to the UK "well over a thousand times in early 2020", with a third of transmission chains brought in from Spain, followed by 29% from France, neither of which faced any restrictions. China accounted for just 0.4% of imported cases.

At the end of February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) advised against travel bans, saying they were "usually not effective in preventing the importation of cases but may have a significant economic and social impact".

And regarding closing the borders it said...

At the end of February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) advised against travel bans, saying they were "usually not effective in preventing the importation of cases but may have a significant economic and social impact".

It argued that by mid-March 2020 there was "significant transmission" in the UK and any extra travel restrictions at that time would have had a "very marginal" impact.

At a meeting in February 2020, the government advisory committee Sage suggested that cutting the number of infections entering the UK by half would only delay the epidemic by five days.

The scientists estimated that a 95% reduction in imported cases, which would have required "draconian" travel restrictions, would have pushed things back by a month.

But at its meeting in January 2021, Sage said: "No intervention, other than a complete, pre-emptive closure of borders, or the mandatory quarantine of all visitors upon arrival in designated facilities, irrespective of testing history, can get close to fully preventing the importation of cases or new variants."

In a game of marginal gains and risk mitigation it seems complete bollocks that on the one hand wearing a mask that reduces infections by percentages is recommended but reducing travel is not.... But hey I'm not a scientist.

The Full article can be found here...

I am not commenting on whether Ivermectin is good/bad solution as I don’t know enough. However, I would urge caution referencing GAVI as your only source as they will clearly have a pro-vaccine nothing else works agenda - simply by the nature of their reason to exist!

Might be worth seeking out a variety of sources to try and get a more balanced view.

Really hard when I can’t see it myself (weird) but if the article is supportive of the viewpoint of GAVI then that’s why they would link to it or republish. Doubt they would do the same if conclusions went against their position right?

As I say, not commenting on the medicine/drug etc only the referencing to sources with a single viewpoint.

The Conversation is an online area where professionals and researchers in a variety of fields can publish articles. It's often a very good source of "layman's" information and not just on Science topics.

Exactly. The vaccines would have only gotten emergency approval if there was no viable treatment approved and Ivermectin is indeed being used with apparent great success in several poor countries, It has a known safety record of decades, so they are not risking their patients in running field trials, especially once infected.

Medicine often makes advances out in the field 'where the rubber hits the road' years before the academics finally catch up.

From what I read Ivermectin has been show to inhibit covid19 in in vitro experiments.. at concentrations equal to 100 times the human approved dose... much like alcohol would inhibit Covid in vitro at sufficient concentration... perhaps we should just all get well pissed once a week?

The side effect profile for ivermectin isn’t any more appealing than those of the vaccines either!
