To wear or not to wear masks?

Boris isn't saying you can't wear a mask or social distance or stay at home, he is just removing the legislation over it and if people don't want to go to a nightclub then dont.

Very vulnerable and cautious just carry on as you do now and allow others to carry on as they see fit using common sense if that still exists in humanity.

That’s the thing, I’ve never had the urge to get closer than a metre to a complete stranger or felt the need to go into a rammed bar etc.

It’s probably one of the reasons I managed to get to the ripe old age of 64 without ever having flu.

Admittedly my 3 years living with cancer is a bit of a bastard.

That is too sensible for alot of people they have no one to moan about if they have to make their own decisions in life.

I was supportive of the lockdowns and mask wearing but at some point we have to return to normality and people need to decide what level of risk they’re happy with.

With a very contagious disease, it makes sense to continue in public much as before, whilst numbers are growing exponentially

But it's not only your level of risk, it's the risk to those around you, including the vulnerable.

It's really quite scary that so many people still think after all this time that wearing a mask is about them and them only.

What about the people who work in shops, nightclubs etc who don't have any choice about mixing with unmasked people ?

I'll be interested to see if we still have to wear them at work as it's quite a unique environment and we can't afford to be a hot site again

This is the ultimate nightmare scenario for businesses who want to stay responsible being faced off by individuals who are choosing not to wear a mask - because they don’t have to.

The next thing we will see all over social media will be anti-mask “heroes” challenging responsible businesses and the self employed.

More division in society, more polarisation and just more angst when it isn’t needed.

Masks protect others more than they protect the wearers / can we really see the anti-maskers showing respect, care and compassion for others?

I really doubt it.

Public transport would be sensible to wear a mask still. We’re also fine with wearing in shops. Whilst we like the idea of going to a Club, we’d like to reduce risk from elsewhere, so we will probably continue except in very limited circumstances

My local shop is providing staff with face masks and visors to wear on the shop floor, personally I'd like to see them all with bubble head rebreathers, why do they have to put themselves at a health risk for the general public

I’d still carry it around and see if it’s way too packed I might pop it on. Also same with public transportation, if it’s full of people it stays on. If there’s hardly anyone i might have it off.

Omg feels so weird thinking back to when we had no idea about masks lol

I'm happy to wear one when necessary..crowded places..not that I really go to busy places. Not sure if we have to wear them at GP s or hospitals, I would still wear them there, as there may well be vulnerable patients there.

I’ll still wear one pretty much as I do now, definitely in shops and crowded places, I work on different properties with people inside so I’ll continue wearing them in that Situation also, I just like to feel like I’m actually being respectful toward others and doing my bit, I can only see the plus points from wearing them, I certainly won’t judge others who decide not to.

Was at fireworks last night atleast 5000 people not 1 mask. Been to Niagara falls the same. Delta variant is in our state yet no major outbreaks. It's odd to think masks are helping this whole time. Been to plenty of large gatherings besides those 2. It is just weird.

Sadly, I think this is very much the case and the under 25s, who won't be fully vaccinated until September, will bare the brunt of the rising infections.

No that is a ringing endorsement to not worry about a Virus. You constantly bring up statistics yet other statistics are just as bad. So how many of our deaths to covid fall under the malpractice umbrella. Trust science lol I have just as much chance of dying to science.

Thats just a ridiculous statement. It doesn't matter how many people die from malpractice, die in a car crash, die from cancer. We all do things to minimise and lower those numbers. We take precautions, live healthier lives, wear seat belts etc. It's a simple step for people to do something to help lower the covid deaths and infections....or should we just do nothing to try to prevent any illness and death because its easier to do that because it doesn't suit my agenda or lifestyle?

How is it a ridiculous statement is it true that I can die from medical malpractice just as I can die from covid or guns or cancer or tornadoes. Wake up. You stated that 300000 people die from medical malpractice. 300000 deaths despite rules, regulations and strict legislation on who can practice and carry out procedures. Imagine how many would die if those checks weren't in place, if my mates brother could carry out boob jobs because he downloaded a certificate off the Internet to say he was a doctor. Millions would be maimed, injured and die. We have rules and regulations to reduce the risk for a reason. Just because more die from a heavily regulated industry is no argument to say we should ignore all covid related advice and precautions.

Last few days, since this started to get media coverage, loads of people have stopped wearing them locally.

Went to the hospitals in Boro and Hartlepool, hardly anyone wearing masks anymore. Went to Tesco this evening, same thing.

I'll personally keep wearing mine. It doesn't hurt me and if it helps to protect others, my conscience is clear.

Even with more people vaccinated and deaths decreasing, I'd still feel guilty if I made someone else ill, even if it was a milder case.

I think I'll monitor the situation and make my own mind up. The government doesn't have a great track record of responding to changes in the situation, so I'll do my own thing.

Again no evidence or reason. Since when did the US take the lead? In my humble opinion I think you are scared. You are scared because you are not facing a human adversary, one that you can shoot or bomb to over come, you are facing an invisible virus, one that has far more stealth and is far more deadly than any adversary you have faced. You are scared and confused and have chosen to ignore rather than confront. Please choose to defeat with simple measures that have minimal impact on your life, rather than blindly ignore in hope.

And that's a ringing endorsement for private health care btw.

Wake up. Unless you can give me a better statistical analysis. I can add all those deaths up and yet.... We are fully open no issues. So what is wrong with people wanting otherwise ?

You stated that 300000 people die from medical malpractice. 300000 deaths despite rules, regulations and strict legislation on who can practice and carry out procedures. Imagine how many would die if those checks weren't in place, if my mates brother could carry out boob jobs because he downloaded a certificate off the Internet to say he was a doctor. Millions would be maimed, injured and die. We have rules and regulations to reduce the risk for a reason. Just because more die from a heavily regulated industry is no argument to say we should ignore all covid related advice and precautions.

So I guess our government and scientists are wrong in there assessment on everyday life. Even though we took the lead in vaccine development. Guess our government is wrong and science.

Yet here we are economy growing again and people getting along with their lives. Adversaries are our daily life. My hope is people living the best they can.... They are now are they not ? No one worrying about a virus. Choices are strange. Guess history is going to have a better judgement on the outcome."

I choose to value life over economy. I'm sure your sweeping statement that no one is worrying about the virus is wildly wrong, but you believe what you want and I will believe what I see. If no one is worrying about a virus is true then there is the very problem. Very sad. Good night from me.

"Was at fireworks last night atleast 5000 people not 1 mask. Been to Niagara falls the same. Delta variant is in our state yet no major outbreaks. It's odd to think masks are helping this whole time. Been to plenty of large gatherings besides those 2. It is just weird.

The US did not 'take the lead' in vaccine development.

Didn't Donald Trump encourage injecting and drinking household cleaning products?

"I was supportive of the lockdowns and mask wearing but at some point we have to return to normality and people need to decide what level of risk they’re happy with.

But it's not only your level of risk, it's the risk to those around you, including the vulnerable.

It's really quite scary that so many people still think after all this time that wearing a mask is about them and them only. "

Exactly. I have never worn a mask to protect myself. I wear one to protect others in case I am asymptomatic.

I feel it is the socially responsible thing to do.

I will probably continue to do so for a while.

It's sad to see you have nothing to offer as a constructive response other than a pathetic lame attack. Its not a muzzle, its a basic, simple sensible action. It maybe a minor inconvenience, but its exactly that...an inconvenience that will save lives. No brainer for me.

Absolutely pointless trying to have a conversation with you, you have nothing to back up your claims, you just make derogatory comments about people.

"I'll carry on wearing a mask while on the Tube and public transport "

I will always and ever wear a mask on public transport. I have picked up coughs before from travelling on public transport... OMG I'd be nearly freaking when I'd hear a dirty wet cough,(excuse the description) way before Covid... But I had the cop to cover my face with a scarf or my top

On public transport a must masks

How long do we have to put with Boris not following science and trying his best to cock this up.

Also anyone noticed vaccination rates are plummeting thought we were suppose to be ramping up.

Responce by whitty valance about wearing masks totally different to Boris.

Shows Boris as a selfish incapable lack of morals human being.

I find some of these comments interesting. Everyone wants to right to choose but there is little consideration for those that have to cope with your choice. You may choose to not wear a mask however, the person you are dealing with, in a shop for instance, doesn’t get the same choice. They personally may wear a mask but if you don’t then you are putting them at risk.

I’m not talking about vulnerable people, I’m talking about people dealing with members of the public. Their choice is taken away but others and that can’t be right.

I would not let my choice impact on others. I feel that is quite selfish and inconsiderate. People should remember how their choice may affect others.

This

I'll have no choice. I'll continue to be riding two trains and a London bus to get to work, then the same home. Work is a secondary school with 1200 kids and 150 or so adults on site. I can wear a mask but I'm willing to bet that the people who begin to crowd into the trains and buses won't. London buses are already pretty scary places to be.

Over a year into this thing and around half the population haven't yet figured out how face coverings are supposed to work, or that this piece of cloth on our faces isn't some random symbol of oppression.

I'm double Pfizered but I'm still wary. I'm pretty sure that if I got inflected (which I consider highly likely in the coming months) I'll be ok. But I have clinically extremely vulnerable people in my life who I'd like to continue seeing. Who I'd rather not like to die just yet.

Because we've had social distancing and masks in shops and the club's have closed.

In a couple of weeks, these people will have little or no choice over whether their patrons wear masks.

It's a roll of the dice. Maybe it'll all be ok. Hopefully it will. But equally the 25k cases per day might spiral out of all control before September. Not long ago we were getting a couple of thousand cases per day and thinking "oh, it's on the rise again."

The whole world (almost) has loads of daily cases. Just because we are testing so much we are aware of more of our positive cases than most. But hospitalization rates and deaths aren’t rising like they were before. This proves the vaccine has changed the deal. It’s given us a way out by stopping the masses of deaths. So absolutely it’s time to end the restrictions, in fact I believe we are doing so probably 4 weeks later than we should have.

In the far East, it's quite normal for people to wear them in winter seasons and has been for many years.

I’m not shaming anyone, I’m pointing out that a persons actions have an impact on others and those people may not be in a position to do anything about it - shop staff, bar staff, waiters etc. That’s not shaming that putting my point forward. It’s nothing to do wish scaremongering. How is it?

Two scientists saying wear them, one politician says don’t and people go with the politician and agree with him - this would be the man they have accused of lying time and again. . The mind boggles.

IMHO complete lifting is too far just yet. Small steady steps is better.

I think masks on public transport (for now) should have remained in place. Yes people can still choose to wear one BUT it is widespread knowledge by now that wearing a mask provides minimal protection to you but does help protect others.

The great behavioural change / social norming experiment continues. Govt can abdicate responsibility now.

Also you gotta wonder (join the dots) whether there could be a desire by some in govt to see the NHS overwhelmed by this third wave. The public will cry “not fit for purpose” and be softened up for full privatisation. Something the new Health Sec is particularly keen on (remember his consultancy position with JP Morgan in USA with their huge involvement in private healthcare).

Possible positive:

- starting to look like the correlation between high infection rates with high hospitalisations/deaths may have been broken?

- businesses need to open up as govt support (for those lucky enough to get it, many didn’t) is about to dry up.

Possible negative:

- the govt are just continuing to follow herd immunity after all and accept (on our behalf) collateral damage!

- the £ is worth more than a life in the UK (as govt so heavily lobbied by wealthy supporters).

We will still continue to wear them in certain places, shops etc certainly..

I think as others do that they should still be worn on public transport, shops etc to help to protect the staff who certainly the former take a hit given the amount of exposure to others..

And definitely in any NHS/vaccination centre..

It all seems a bit of a 'fuck it let's jump in' moment given three weeks ago ish we were sort of 'well let's go in a bit and see how that is'..

Based solely on my own experiences - the amount of people not wearing masks correctly currently suggests to me that removing the legal obligation to do so will change very little. Too many folk wearing them around their chin and doing bugger all.

For me personally I'll be leaving mine off as soon as I can, but understand why some will want to keep theirs on.

I'm not wondering whether they want to soften the NHS up for a sell-off; I'm sure they do. This and any other dodgy legislation they can get through under cover of more covid deaths for which they are now abdicating responsibility; we'll have to see what the inquiry says about that...

I thought the whole point of making masks mandatory was to keep everyone protected?

Once you give people the choice, it only takes a couple of people to not wear them and the majority will say what's the point?

Still I'm sure the man who shook hands with covid patients after being told not too ,knows best

Apart from NYC, the USA never had the kind of restrictions most of the rest of the world has become used to.

They didn't have mandates social distancing and masks, closed bars etc.

And they've had a worse outcome than us.

Depends on how you judge the outcome. I don’t think you can really compare data from one country to the rest. Different testing rates affect the numbers reported. And ways of classing death as COVID also skews the figures. If u work by capita I think Uk shows worse death rate but like I said I don’t think u can compare as there isn’t a standardized way of classing COVID deaths across the world. Also not just deaths but the economic affects have to be factored in to class how the ‘outcome’ is.

I would say that whichever way you might want to cut the stats and play the demographic card the simple fact that the USA has had 621,335 deaths recorded to Covid is a bad outcome!

"I'll carry on wearing a mask while on the Tube and public transport

I will always and ever wear a mask on public transport. I have picked up coughs before from travelling on public transport... OMG I'd be nearly freaking when I'd hear a dirty wet cough,(excuse the description) way before Covid... But I had the cop to cover my face with a scarf or my top "

While I agree if you are feeling unwell it could be helpful to wear a mask to prevent some of the spread however it is not healthy or natural to prevent us from having any exposure to infection

"I find some of these comments interesting.

Wish all this trying to shame people would stop! How long shall we wear masks? 1 more year ? 2 ? Rest of our lives? Enough scaremongering all ready! X"

That is a ridiculous statement because it isnt scare mongering and it isnt shaming.

You have been very clear from the very beginning of this pandemic that you think anybody that didn't wear a face covering in a supermarket was the lowest of the low and shouldn't leave their house and now you are saying actually I'm not gonna wear a mask and anyone who thinks people should is shaming!

Personally I do understand why some people will continue to wear the and there are definitely some situations where I think that would be more than advisable.

It just continues to be a divisive issue because now those that dont want to wear one or upset at those the feel the need too.

Personally I think it would have made sense and a lot of people would feel more comfortable if it was still mandatory on all public transport for the time being.

Tbh I thought so to - as they do in some Asian countries, on a voluntary basis.

I think I will continue with masks in shops to protect the shop keeper and anywhere where I want to protect the other person.

Wish all this trying to shame people would stop! How long shall we wear masks? 1 more year ? 2 ? Rest of our lives? Enough scaremongering all ready! X

In the far East, it's quite normal for people to wear them in winter seasons and has been for many years.

And guess what? They have far less winter cold/flu.

It's not shaming or scare mongering. It's public health.

Sure if people want to continue wearing them crack on! But those that choose not to once restrictions are lifted dont judge them! X

If you are breathing all over someone else then that person does have a right to judge. I would do if someone did it to me.

Tend not to get up and close enough to breath on people! x

Unfortunately, if you are within 1 metre for any length of time that is exactly what you will be doing, intentionally or not.

But it's still up to every individual to decide for themselves once restrictions are over and the choice they make shd not b judged! That's all I'm saying! X

I understand your point but not everyone gets a choice about being safe do they? if they have to deal with people who don’t wear masks then someone else’s choice puts that person at risk. That’s the fact of it.

I will judge those that intend put others at risk because I feel it is wrong.

U crack on with that then! x"

Oh I intend to

"I find some of these comments interesting. Everyone wants to right to choose but there is little consideration for those that have to cope with your choice. You may choose to not wear a mask however, the person you are dealing with, in a shop for instance, doesn’t get the same choice. They personally may wear a mask but if you don’t then you are putting them at risk.

But if those people who are at greater risk simply wear ffp3 masks (which filter 99% of particles) when out and about, they will be better protected than if those around them were wearing scarves or fashion masks.

It’s not about those at greater risk, it’s about those that don’t want to deal with others that aren’t wearing masks. It’s about not just considering yourself, it’s about being considerate of others. Simply because a person decides not to wear a mask that doesn’t make it right or fair on those around them. It’s almost as though they stick their fingers up at everyone else - it’s the ‘I’m alright Jack’ mentality.

It's up to the individual and how much they care about fellow humans

We will now wear a mask anytime one of us have even a slight cold to reduce the chances of passing it on but I doubt we will continue to wear them unless we feel we are putting others at risk ... Even hayfever sneezes should warrant a face covering

I won't be wearing masks after the 19th. I've did my part throughout, got a vaccine I wasn't keen on and stuck to the majority of restrictions even when those making them have repeatedly broken them.

Wearing a mask isn't a walk in park for me either, I have legit claustrophobia and 5 mins in a mask has my heart rate through the roof with a nice sheen of sweat over my entire body so Im glad to see the back of them.

I think, given that we will be given the choice to act sensibly (whatever that means) it is now everybody's responsibility to do what they consider the right thing to do. Wearing a mask is not pleasant, for sure and I often felt for the poor doctors, nurses and other key staff who had no choice.

I think I will continue to wear a mask when I am in an enclosed environment or likely to be closer than 2 metres to somebody - as that is also something we do not have to do anymore. I got into the habit and I will just carry on to protect others around me.

Washing hands etc... I have always done that the moment I got into my home in the same way I have always taken my shoes off.

But if those people who are at greater risk simply wear ffp3 masks (which filter 99% of particles) when out and about, they will be better protected than if those around them were wearing scarves or fashion masks.

Lol true.

Militaries around the world here wear this biological suit during a bio attack.

One of the world's deadliest pandemics. You are good with that cloth mask.

Bio attacks don't really eminate from the nasal passages of an enemy soldier now do they

Biological warfare is the deliberate use of disease-causing biological agents such as bacteria, virus, rickettsiae, and fungi, or their toxins, to kill or incapacitate humans, animals, or plants as an act of war.

So finally you admit in your recent post 'one of the worlds deadliest pandemics' yet you refuse to take basic steps to attempt to limit and reduce the effects. You go on to note that biological warfare is the deliberate use of, amongst other things, a virus to kill and harm humans. Seems to me you should be on trial soon. I really do hope that your selfish and idiotic attitude does not end badly for you, like the 650000 others in your country, and more importantly that your actions don't negatively impact on others. is it deadly ? Yes do I own mopp4 NBC gear? Nope. Did I get vaccinated yes. CDC says trust the science no masks

Yep of course it's not deadly! I forgot that bit.

Trust the science "

I do.

I’m not talking about vulnerable people, I’m talking about people dealing with members of the public. Their choice is taken away but others and that can’t be right.

I would not let my choice impact on others. I feel that is quite selfish and inconsiderate. People should remember how their choice may affect others.

Very vulnerable and cautious just carry on as you do now and allow others to carry on as they see fit using common sense if that still exists in humanity."

"Personally I do understand why some people will continue to wear the and there are definitely some situations where I think that would be more than advisable.

It just continues to be a divisive issue because now those that dont want to wear one or upset at those the feel the need too.

Personally I think it would have made sense and a lot of people would feel more comfortable if it was still mandatory on all public transport for the time being. "

On trains!!!

Well the Northern ones are filled with mask minority wearing people!

Does that apply to all NHS staff working with Covid patients?

Why do they wear masks if it does not offer protection?

Could it have something to do with heard immunity, something the government said they would not do.

They have gone from saying we need to protect the vulnerable in society to who gives a shit what happens to them.

"Was at fireworks last night atleast 5000 people not 1 mask. Been to Niagara falls the same. Delta variant is in our state yet no major outbreaks. It's odd to think masks are helping this whole time. Been to plenty of large gatherings besides those 2. It is just weird.

You're in a different country, your situation has absolutely nothing to do with ours.

Has everything to do with yours. It's a global pandemic not just a UK one.

How many people have died in America again?

300000 die each year from medical malpractice and you think we are worried about a virus ?"

Nice to hear for a change from someone sensible, capable of putting things in perspective.

BTW, from I have founds on medical research websites, outdoor meetings are anyway very low risk of infection, masks or no masks. And for this disease, "infection" does not automatically mean "getting ill", even less "ending up in hospital" let alone dying.

I find amazing how many people would love to spend the rest of their lives scared shitless hiding under the rock.

Looks like scaremongers realised finally they've gone too far. Good luck to Boris & Co with un-scaring those who got too used to being scared, and now don't want to be weaned off their addiction.

300000 die each year from medical malpractice and you think we are worried about a virus ?

Nice to hear for a change from someone sensible, capable of putting things in perspective.

BTW, from I have founds on medical research websites, outdoor meetings are anyway very low risk of infection, masks or no masks. And for this disease, "infection" does not automatically mean "getting ill", even less "ending up in hospital" let alone dying.

I find amazing how many people would love to spend the rest of their lives scared shitless hiding under the rock.

Looks like scaremongers realised finally they've gone too far. Good luck to Boris & Co with un-scaring those who got too used to being scared, and now don't want to be weaned off their addiction."

We worked out over a year ago we got about 000.3 chance of dying from Covid and have hid behind our Sofa since

"I was supportive of the lockdowns and mask wearing but at some point we have to return to normality and people need to decide what level of risk they’re happy with. "

We do... if people are sensible and use whatever precautions they feel are necessary for them personally, I'm sure we will be fine.

I'm looking forward to seeing faces and smiles again.

Yes it is. If you can’t express it properly there’s no chance you can calculate it properly

Yes it is. If you can't do basic 9yo maths what chance do you have of analysing or interpreting data and stats.

I agree…..like visiting Doncaster without been armed "

Or even walking across Mitcham Common late at night without a general purpose machine gun and a few hand grenades.

We’ll continue to wear masks for indoor activity, public transport and shopping. We are both double vaccinated but it just makes sense to us.

Some people have said they'll wear a mask for public transport, but not in a pub. Why? You can't just be alittle bit in favour for it. Also does anyone who actually wears a mask change it every half an hour , doesn't touch the mask and if they do change it. I'm curious if anyone who believes they are effective actually follows the guidance of how to use one.

If the goverment scientists came out with the advice that they don't work in control of spread of the virus( like the advice last year) would you stop wearing one?

Will never wear one, filthy, disgusting, bacteria breeding damp pieces of cloth that I see some people wearing around their chins. They contain bits of Spittal, bits of old food and children are forced to wear these all day.

NOT MY KIDS. Only fear makes people do this to themselves and its so sad to see. Get rid of your TV and the fears gone, try it for a few days it works.

Have some pride in yourselves.

Many people just don't care anymore. It's about time covid was treated the same way as the flu and we can get back to normal.

The lockdown restrictions were about as effective as our political leaders.

I think there is alot of people that are fearful of life at the moment. The goverments message has been very effective, the mask has become the symbol of compliance and virtue signalling. Letting it go will be hard mentally for alot.

Israel has seen the efficacy of the Pfizer vaccination drop from 96.8% to circa 60% in the space of just 4 weeks as the Delta variant continues to evolve and overstep antigens.

This is the risk that England is taking by encouraging the virus to rip through unvaccinated, partially vaccinated and fully vaccinated people. The virus will find its way through - it’s just a matter of time.

How is it virtue signalling?

I'll miss wearing a mask, especially when out shopping.

I love muttering 'twat' when anyone gets in my way, because it couldn't possibly be me who blocks the isle.

If it were possible for asymptomatic spreaders to be charged with manslaughter for any subsequent deaths that arose from infections that they spread - virtue signalling is the last thing that you would be thinking.
