Spike protein and lung damage

This was from the journal of physiology and we figured it needed it's own thread.

This was the synopsis of the research.

Acute lung injury (ALI) leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome is the major cause of COVID-19 lethality. Cell entry of SARS-CoV-2 occurs via the interaction between its surface spike protein (SP) and angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2). It is unknown if the viral spike protein alone is capable of altering lung vascular permeability in the lungs or producing lung injury in vivo. To that end, we intratracheally instilled the S1 subunit of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S1SP) in K18-hACE2 transgenic mice that overexpress human ACE2 and examined signs of COVID-19-associated lung injury 72 h later. Controls included K18-hACE2 mice that received saline or the intact SP and wild-type (WT) mice that received S1SP. K18-hACE2 mice instilled with S1SP exhibited a decline in body weight, dramatically increased white blood cells and protein concentrations in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), upregulation of multiple inflammatory cytokines in BALF and serum, histological evidence of lung injury, and activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-?B) pathways in the lung. K18-hACE2 mice that received either saline or SP exhibited little or no evidence of lung injury. WT mice that received S1SP exhibited a milder form of COVID-19 symptoms, compared with the K18-hACE2 mice. Furthermore, S1SP, but not SP, decreased cultured human pulmonary microvascular transendothelial resistance (TER) and barrier function. This is the first demonstration of a COVID-19-like response by an essential virus-encoded protein by SARS-CoV-2 in vivo. This model of COVID-19-induced ALI may assist in the investigation of new therapeutic approaches for the management of COVID-19 and other coronaviruses.

For those of us non-medical, what does that say/prove in terms of humans contracting covid?

"For those of us non-medical, what does that say/prove in terms of humans contracting covid?"

It's showing that the spike protein is possibly the thing doing the damage and that it's capable of entering the cells on it's own in genetically modified mice with human like ac2 receptors.

As a non medical observer, Besides the vaccine, any other remedys.

Full HazChem suite with oxygen respirators, move to an remote Island with all its own resources and no incidence yet of Covid.

The rest is snake oil & potentially worse than doing nothing - basically anything Trump suggested is just bo**ox

Can we go another level down on the laymen's scale?

It's interesting now, to be getting this level of granularity in the research. It's really allowing us to understand the virus so well and how it actually does its 'work'.

Any chance of a citation? Abstracts alone aren't massively helpful.

Just for clarity... the article is talking about the VIRUS'S spike proteins, NOT the vaccine

Good point. The Pfizer mRNA vaccine uses a mutant spike protein, right? Stuck a couple of proline units on the end to prevent uptake into respiratory epithelium I seem to recall.

The remote island sounds like the best option.

Even if it's both, I'd rather have less spike protein than more.

I'll take the stuff that isn't made to continually replicate in me - so, the vaccine

The spike protein on the SARS-CoV-2 virus causes lung injury by various mechanisms.

That's the absolutely simplest explanation.

my attempt: they worked out which specific bit of the virus causes the nastiness. Which may help in focussing how to fight it.

Or in fav terms : if you know it's the cock (spike) that causes the pregnancy (lung disease ) you can more easily find ways of protecting against it like condoms.

OK in layman therms Say what ever you like .at the end of the day we all have to breathe oxygen. Be It droplets are aerosol,s so tell where its safe to breathe air

( Islands already thought of )

Condoms blocked there working .

Lungs blocked you die .

Where's the comparison?

Certain germs (and other things) can hurt your lungs.

One bit of the Covid germs can hurt your lungs. (It's the bit in all the UK approved vaccines - but the virus is a machine designed to make itself over and over again. The vaccine doesn't have the virus making machine in it)

There is no place anywhere on earth where it is guaranteed that you can breathe and not have stuff that will hurt your lungs.

The vaccine makes it less likely that the stuff in Covid will hurt your lungs (or anything else).

If we know what causes babies, we can stop unwanted pregnancy.

If we know what causes Covid pneumonia, we can learn how to stop Covid pneumonia.

that's ambiguous to the point where there's little difference between the two.

What the study found is that the spike protein itself has the ability to change shape and squeeze inside the cell causing the damage in some small cases instead of binding on to the receptor.

The same side effects of the virus crop up in the same ratio of vaccines(although in much smaller proportions) and the common link between the two is the spike protein hence the research to help understand the mechanisms.
