Very early days yet, more data needed comparing omicron to other variants.

This preprint publication sounds scary - a German group tested delta and omicron virus side by side against sera from Pfizer triple and double vaccinated individuals. For the triple vaccinated, two weeks afterwards, immune response was 10-fold lower for omicron compared to delta. For double vaccinated, 3 months later, about 30-fold lower response.

You can read the paper by doing a search-

About 24 hours after the Chinese released it.

They are using serum from individuals Pfizer vaccinated, either two weeks or three months ago. These are then tested against either delta or omicron virus to see the strength of the immune response.

I think it's too early days. Some worrying signs but hard to say for sure.

I'm planning for the worst and hoping for better.

Where did you get this from? Everything I’ve seen indicates that at present there have been very few extra admissions in SA

Does the immune response vary with seriousness ?

If (tbc) omicron is less dangerous, would that have caused similar results ?

Chris whitty said the south Africa omicron lag is now up and hospital admissions are rising expotentially over there. The global science community is keeping a very close eye on the events in South Africa and its this info that has drove Boris to excute plan B now.

Scary if you choose to believe it that way. Can you tell me what 10 or 30 times lower means in actual terms?

Because at the moment we have way more antibodies than are necessary (which is how you’re able to prevent symptoms).

If they reduce that doesn’t mean anything unless we know what the first figure and last figure are.

Also they said that the vaccine wouldn’t work against delta and then it turned out to only have a 3% impact on the efficacy

The other issue is that the people who seem to be the biggest spreaders of omicron in South Africa at the moment seem to be the young… and because they suffer the least symptoms anyway, that’s is why there may be a lag….

Once they spread it to older and older people, that is when you may see the explosion of hospitalisations and unfortunately deaths

They have also said that the increase in cases is due to a low up take in vaccines and it's mostly the unvaccinated that are getting sick.

I misunderstood the original post in terms of how the strain was being tested against the vaccine, the OP has explained it in more detail which now makes a lot more sense.

It would be helpful when you reply to explain a little more than just saying fact, that tends to make me switch off rather than think further on the matter.

This article is a preprint and has not been peer-reviewed [what does this mean?]. It reports new medical research that has yet to be evaluated and so should not be used to guide clinical practice.
