I heard on the news that angelique coetzee, the south african doctor who first spotted the new covid variant, said that boris is over reacting over it as the symptoms are very mild, what are your view of it and boris reaction over it? I agree with her.

My opinion is that we don’t yet have enough data to know how things will go. Africa has a very low average age and very low levels obesity. You just can’t compare them

Boris is moving cautiously until we know what we are up against.

Let’s face it, this time last year without the vaccine we were facing 1000s of deaths a day and full scale lockdowns.

Now we’ve got a variety that’s more transmissible and still life is basically back to normal. The only things that’s changed is the vaccine.

Small measures to fight some spread and an emphasis on the booster rollout is the perfect balance between treating omicron with respect while we are still learning, and not stifling our lives and economy

It may be very mild because the people they first noticed had the virus were the young, and they are likely to have milder symptoms anyway…. Once it’s start sweeping through the older population we will get a better sense…. But the South African hospitalisation numbers are going through the roof so where it might not kill you, still bad enough to put you in hospital.. and that would put a huge strain on health services!

Whike Omicron may have mkld symptoms generally, although my understanding was that people have died while they have the virus, the measures are there to limit contagion and therefore viral mass. That limits its opportunities to mutate again.

Boris has been slammed by many of us on here for dithering, mixed messaging and his failure to take the virus seriously in the early part of last year led to more deaths than there might have been so he wasn't going to be blasé with this purely on the infection rate..

So, If I wanted to control the masses with a virus, I would send out a version that killed a few, made some very poorly, but also unaffected the majority. I'd then come out with a vaccine, knowing the socially aware and law abiding would take it. Once I was sure the vast majority were safe. I'd release the full power virus, and eliminate all the people who thought they new better, and weren't prepared to do their bit for the community. But I'm sure that won't happen and you have nothing to worry about

There was a woman called Mia Malan summarized the latest data from South Africa on Twitter. She and others have said it's early data so definitive conclusions can't be drawn but it is an interesting read, comparing protection for different vaccines vs unvaccinated and also waning of vaccine protect over time. Numbers of omicron cases have only started to hit high numbers in South Africa less than 2 weeks ago. Hospitalisations hit 2 to 4 weeks after that and deaths start to follow 2 to 3 weeks after that.

Some else to note is south Africa are very slow with their data so are constantly back filling cases hospitalisations and death from days sometimes weeks before.

Strange that people who have disagreed with UK doctors for a year find this doctor so agreeable. She is pro vax and mask also, though this isn't so well recieved by some.

And they've also spent a year carping about long term data but give the thumbs up to 3 weeks or so of Omicron.

The risk element with this variant, is that it spreads more easily. The more it spreads, the more it will mutate.

In addition though, if a smaller percentage of people get sick, but there are a much larger number of people infected, you will still end up with a large number of poorly people.

New variants don't replace the old ones, they are extra. Viruses reproduce through cell replication using their hosts cells to provide the building materials. This is where Mutations happen, as the replica cells are often imperfect. Even though these mutations can create new strains of a virus, the original virus is still there too...

When the conquistadors brought flu and other diseases over to the America's it killed lots of the population and wiped out civilizations like the incas. A virus gives not a jot if you are scared of it or not.

Trying to tease and bully it and call it names as you do people makes no difference.

If you are succeptible to it you get seriously ill or die. Luck. The vaccine reduces the chances of getting infected and getting seriously ill or dying.

More importantly, it reduces the chances of someone else being infected by you.

From what I gathered is that South Africa had just had a wave of Delta prior to Omicron running through which meant a massive percentage of the population already had 'recent' immunity "boosted" by natural Delta infections.

In contrast, the UK, with a large proportion of its population not coming into contact with anything to reboot the immune system, meaning it was waning and therefore vulnerable to worse outcomes, hence the decision to mad panic, re-vaccinate the who population.

This then, would mimic the scenario South Africa was seeing in that there is strong residual 'herd' immunity to fight the virus.

Omicron may not be the "less damaging" version promised by the Professor, simply because the population it has re-infected carried strong antibodies and masking the damage it is actually capable of.

Only time will tell, especially in countries that had not recently had a run if Delta and low on vaccination as to what it is really capable of.

One big government failing, they expected the need to mass re-vaccinate in an event like this, then why the he'll didn't they put plans in place over summer ready for it. Sailing too close to the wind with time lag between jab and protection given and might not give enough time for the protection we obviously need.

Then you'll be reading "that 10's of 1000's people got really ill after the booster, which proves that vaccination doesn't work".. perfect anti-vax ammo!!

Let those that don't believe or don't want vaccine have their choice. If they get ill or die then they can blame no one else.

I get informed regularly of pregnant mothers who refused vaccination believing they were right. Only to be rushed to theatre to have their babies taken out weeks before the due date, to allow the mother to be put into a coma in order to be ventilated.

40% of these won't ever see their new-borns or the babies see their mother, as they're dead!!

There is only so many times you can bang your head against a wall and not worth the argument.

Lockdown next week as they're soon realise that vaccination response will not be quick enough and at 34% on London refusing any vaccine. Hospitals will be overrun.

If they were relying so much on vaccination to get us out the shut, then why didn't they use summer to get a plan in place..

There's enough science to show that there are many reasons for Omicron to be mild in SA but potentially different here.

But....they haven't had long enough to study it to see the effects over a longer period so they have no idea if it will be milder or not.

The main point of the latest restrictions is to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed as the more people that get it then the more people end up in hospital - simple numbers issue.

In fact omicron is taking over faster than any previous strain.

No... I pointed out that one strain doesn't "cease to exist" because another strain has emerged, or even become more dominant. Ultimately, you can only be infected with one strain at a time, so a more infectious strain can potentially prevent different strains from infecting people. There will however still be infections of all of the other strains, plus many unidentified ones too.

If countries have managed to successfully prevented the spread of omicron variant across their borders, then their infections will not suddenly change to Omicron because "The Virus" has mutated.

The infection rate data reflects a moving and soaring target. Our health care structures will be overwhelmed within the next ten days with millions of employees in isolation by year end whom we all depend upon to function. If we are not in a lockdown of sorts on Sat 18th '21, I will be unsurprised given our current grossly incompetent government. 30% of employees are infected and have to isolate in my firm and we are not even front facing but test upon each and every building entry. Hits to tax revenue, productivity and GDP will be large but un-reflected until end Q1 2022. Mask, distance and minimize contact as you can afford it.

You can't "get healthy" in as little time as you can get protected by the vaccine though. I'm a LOT healthier now than I was in March 2020, but despite my efforts I'm not at optimal health yet and that's almost 2 years down the line. The vaccine takes effect in a matter of weeks. "

It was me, I think you mean increasing number of infections of Delta. This will be the case whilst both circulate and there is complancy to Omicron, as you can't choose the variant that infects you. Until Omicron becomes the dominant variant and the most likely to be caught, then Delta will still be with us. Complacency would see a peak in Delta infections, however by avoiding Omicron it would slow its infection rate and help prevent a peak in Delta infections as well.

Thing is, the latest news coming from the Netherlands about Omicron is not good, another good reason to avoid both.

It's really just a numbers thing. If it does produce mostly mild symptoms in most people, that's good.

But when the numbers of infected are so high, the small % of people who have severe symptoms equates to a large number of people, albeit a small percentage of those affected.

This large number of severely ill can then overun the emergency care in hospitals.

I actually said they were preaching about the vaccine under guise of caring for others. That’s not the same as saying they got vaccinated under the guise of caring for others. I was referring to people who push it on others, demanding that they get vaccinated because it’s “the healthy choice” while simultaneously living unhealthy lifestyles themselves. If you read where he mentioned “lockdown pork” and “shoving your opinion about health”, you’ll find the bit I was agreeing with

As for infecting others and trying to get a win, you actually brought that up first. “Far, far, far lower” isn’t exactly scientific now either is it? A quick google search will also find plenty of conflicting articles about transmission but the point still stands; you can still infect others after vaccination, I wasn’t disputing the likelihood.

You can be super healthy and still be succeptible to Covid or any other virus or illness. That is genetic luck and environmental factors as much as anything else.

From research done so far, yes you can carry the same viral load, but the period you are infecting others/ shedding is shorter

Vaccination is not about living a healthy"l lifestyle, it's about not catching a virus and dying from it.

Wherever you are hanging out and getting so upset about overweight people suggesting that you get vaccinated to help others is probably not where you should be if it upsets you so much.

Vaccination is primarily about health. It "should" be safe and effective for EVERYONE.

Yet the reports on the yellow note system and VAERS with severe adverse reactions and deaths clearly show it is not safe.

So it's ok to harm the few to save the rest, is it? And it's ok to mandate something that is clearly reporting these kinds of reactions, hey, is it?

While the powers in control don't bother their arse to investigate or report honestly on these reactions?

How many of you were told about these reporting systems and the kind of reports collected by your health care professionals before getting the shot?

At least indicating that they are obtaining "INFORMED CONSENT" as dictated by the Nuremberg Code?!
