well with so many viruses queued up, it is no big surprise if it came from the wild (UN report: "up to 850,000 undiscovered viruses which could be transferred to humans are thought to exist in mammal and avian hosts.") |

It's most important to focus precious resources on limiting the damage of it now. We need to learn from our experience of handling this 1, so that we are much better prepared for the next 1. As stated by another, our intrusion into and disruption of formerly distant areas of separated wildlife, means that we are increasingly prone to other similar zoonotic viruses, that could have even greater impacts to our own lives and the world.
Someone may know. So what, really? |

Not least, if it was man-made we have to find out who made it and why.
It begs the question of reparations...the UK alone has spent a reputed £400b on this and we are all slowly having our taxes increased and our savings/pensions eroded by this |

But do you think we will ever find out for certain?, if there is a 'lie' its not going to be revealed.
The virus has been circulating that long now that pinpointing which 'animal' was the intermeidietary between bats and humans is going to be impossible.
Likewise proving this was a 'lab leak' is going to be equally as impossible.
There have been many pandemics throughout history (before labs and genome understanding) that have spread from animals to humans so of course that cannot be ruled out as most likley as that is the 'normal' way pandemics happen.
However whilst I dont buy into the craziest of conspiracy theories neither am i naive enough to think it is beyond the realms of possibility that there may have been a terrible lab leak and it has been covered up by China/USA (or whoever)
We just will never know with 100% certainty
The where and how are now of less importance the how we deal with it and the future prevention of pandemics is where efforts should be concentrated. |

Wuhan yes, bats not so sure, I'm sticking with the theory it leaked from a lab that study moon viruses, they want mine the moon for Helium 3 but need earth to build up herd immunity so it doesn't hinder the project.
Microbes were found to grow better in space when found on MIA space station.
Chinas Chang project has been working on the moon recently. The south poles are a good storage areas for bugs to hibernate.

It's not really a coincidence that they would set up a lab close to the things they were studying, it seems quite a sensible thing to do really.

The "Furin cleavage site" found in the Sars-Cov-2 virus is generally considered by scientists too be much of a leap from the virus found in bats for it to be a "natural" occurence, as in nature only small changes occur over time. Its that change to the "wild" virus that makes it so contagious in humans. The Wuhan lab was known to be working on "gain of function" research, including on how to make Coronaviruses more contagious.
From what I've read, it would seem the most likely thing is an unintentional leak from the lab or someone accidently contracted it in the lab and passed it in to the population in Wuhan.
I doubt we'll ever know exactly what happened as the Chinese have destroyed all the evidence and individuals who were working there at the time have apparently mysteriously disappeared. |

There are 11 recorded cases of viruses jumping from animals to humans...it's called Zoonoses. The Spanish flu of 1918 was avian in origin. |

It will all have come about because of some group of folks having a drinks party at work, as this appears to be the root of all evil according to everyone nowadays.
On a more academic and reasoned approach though, it is highly likely to have come from a natural occurrence. It’s been happening ever since genetic material existed and will continue to happen as long as it does. Going back into history there has been many recorded incidents involving corona type viruses going back to the 1850s and records of pandemics going back a lot further.
Increase population density, travel and mixing of groups in general is a perfect storm for these to happen more and more frequently.
The upside is, a big reduction in population is needed to address global warming and many other problems of the modern world and so these natural phenomena have their place in the grand scale of things.
Whenever a population of animals becomes too dense, disease develops, wipes out all but the best adapted to survive and the system is reset.
In short, I think it’s just the natural way of things. |

If anyone seriously believes that the Chinese government are going to make a radical change, to become truly open and honest, then it's unrealistic, in the short term. Our only governments are not transparent, so we should expect accountability but not realistically get it, if its source was covered up in China and it wasn't a natural jump.
Probably better to move on. Be better prepared, as we've covered this, so very many times before. |

The completely independent WHO have said it hasn't come from a lab in China.

Chinas Chang project has been working on the moon recently. The south poles are a good storage areas for bugs to hibernate.
How would a "moon virus" be so similar to an earlier SARS virus and also the MERS virus (which doesn't occur in China) and is also very similar genetically to every other coronavirus we know about?
Coronaviruses infect most mammals, we've known that for decades. Here we have a coronavirus that's very infectious and infects many mammals. We have a country (China) that's invading wild mammal habitats at an alarming rate, to build towns and cities, and we have a culture of eating wild animals that we'd think odd in the West.
So far, so naturally occurring.

Why are you starting with the assumption that somebody "must" know? There is no reason for that to be the case.
Also, if you aren't likely to believe it anyway then it doesn't matter. You will continue to believe what you want.
The Chinese Government may know. They also may not.
The WHO have the largest amount of gathered data and at least have some first hand data from visiting Wuhan, taking samples and face-to-face interviews including staff at the lab.
Their conclusion is that it probably originated in animals and was unlikely to come from a lab leak.
Anything other than that is based on progressively less verifiable information and more speculation.
The WHO findings are therefore the most reliable until some verifiable new data is available.
The WHO also has a SAGO group in place continuing to investigate the matter, so if anything changes we will eventually find out.

As an adult, you will know that there are not definitive answer to everything.
Why are you assuming that there "must" be a lie about the virus' origins?
There almost certainly was lies around the spread and severity as the Chinese authorities wanted to deal with it secretly. However, that does not mean that there are lies about the origins.
There has been a WHO investigation and they have a group continuing to look for new information.
Adults would accept the findings so far and wait patiently to see if there was more to come.
Children would keep whining about something they are ignorant of and cannot influence. |

I would agree we need to know and currently we do know. If different evidence appears over time that knowledge will change. The problem is some people simply don't accept the knowledge as it doesn't fit with their narrative and will always think they are being lied to. I worry about how they function in day to day life with this personality trait. |

Who doesn't "want to know"?
We know as much is possible to. You either accept that and wait for more if it comes or you don't because you choose not to "believe" what the better informed (WHO investigation) has concluded so far. |

I think there's a difference between not wanting to know and being so obsessed with trying to find out the minutia that a person ends up down the deepest of dark rabbit holes..
And not wanting to know is not a bad thing, getting on with the now etc change a much better way of directing ones energies..
There always has been throughout history 'stuff' that many of us will never fully know the truth, that's not to say it's right that we don't but just how it is..
Let's be honest even in what we call a modern representative democracy we the people are very limited in what we can influence apart from the not perfect but what we have ability to pick one side as opposed to the the others..

I think it's very likely to be too late to know if it was manufactured or not. (Personally I believe it wasn't, I believe containment procedures were compromised accidentally during a study at the Level 4 Biolab in Wuhan in to Bat viruses. Accident's happen).
It's not like anyone is going to go after China for it. Not that they could, that would be foolish in the extreme and very ill-advised.
