Well our Government knew full well the NHS wasn't prepared as they did that huge exercise that all previous Governments did to find out if we were prepared and our weaknesses and what we were short of and due to "Austerity" and money saving everything was ignored and we even sold off huge stocks of something called "PPE" to save money on storage costs etc etc ? and every the excercise showed we were failing on ..lo and behold along comes " Covid" and ......  |

I don't think it was a case of being under prepared... the whole response was an attempt to balance between restrictions and making/not spending money.
If, on day one, every country imposed a full lockdown and closed their borders, the spread of the virus would have been stopped in it's tracks. This however would have had huge impact on every aspect of every life everywhere around the world, which would have been unpopular & very expensive.
Ultimately, every government had their own idea of what was the best balance.

It's fairly easy to be clued up to clueless on things. Excellent evidence, including predictions, has shown many of the various risks that we are subject to, including zoonotic diseases that could harm us too. It's certainly possible to value human health, somewhat more substantially than we do too. Decisions taken for us, by the few cultures with democratic leanings, thus with ourselves holding some accountability, have often led to reduced spending on things like pandemic readiness testing and planning  .
These and other fairly accessible facts don't make it incredibly tough to predict credible catastrophic stories. Good budgets will assemble good expertise, to support realistic fine tuning.
This media production was well discussed in this forum, during the pandemic. We will likely get many more predictable disasters, that we won't have prepared for. |

Pathogens with mortalities of above 5% and moderate transmissibility- are non negotiable- it’s NPI’s vaccines( and would include lockdowns) or face civilisation breakdown.
And herd immunity is not guaranteed with pathogens eg Rabies

Point being just because a film maker used science fiction and mixes it with fact's and throws in some imagination it doesn't make them a genius or the film a predictor.
Shit happens a pandemic was due at some point it's just we have all become complacent and too trusting in modern medicine for it not to happen,but there you have it,it happened.
Now it depends on what your particular beliefs are man made or an act of nature fact is that whilst it's still around modern medicine did manage to get it under control along with quarantine and other things.
I personally think we dodged a bullet the mutations could have gone a very different way and become far more deadly.
Obviously the dead and permanently changed ( myself included) would say that it was bad enough, whilst others insist it was just like a mild cold that was just down to luck and genetics,to dumb it down kinda think of the way some people get pissed easier than others.

My opinion. It could have been slightly more or slightly less.
We will never know because the government caved in to the harbingers of doom way too early. They must have known it wasn't a huge problem as they carried on as normal themselves.

My opinion. It could have been slightly more or slightly less.
We will never know because the government caved in to the harbingers of doom way too early. They must have known it wasn't a huge problem as they carried on as normal themselves.
The fact remains that 100% of the population has been detrimentally affected to possibly "save" a fraction of 1% from dying. Not worth it by any logical thought."

Fascinating how the experts all knew how this would unfold and had modelled it pretty perfectly and yet we seemed totally under prepared in terms of planning for lockdowns and disease control measures, ppe stocks, schools, care homes etc...
I don't think it was a case of being under prepared... the whole response was an attempt to balance between restrictions and making/not spending money.
If, on day one, every country imposed a full lockdown and closed their borders, the spread of the virus would have been stopped in it's tracks. This however would have had huge impact on every aspect of every life everywhere around the world, which would have been unpopular & very expensive.
Ultimately, every government had their own idea of what was the best balance.

Unfortunately, I think it was already too late when we started to hear / were told about the virus.
From many friends in Hong Kong , it definitely seemed yo be taking a hold there well before December and then there was Chinese New Year so people travelled across the world to their families.
It was everywhere and we had no idea about it.
I am certain that I had it before Christmas in 2019 when I look back at the bug I had. |
