Free STI test kits - oral swabs. How often?
Jump to: Newest in thread
How often do you test?
Also, I’m looking at ordering the free kit, but it doesn’t mention an oral swab. I’m in Lincolnshire if that makes a difference. Any recommendations for a free full kit (vaginal swab, oral swab, blood) is appreciated. I’ve found a kit with oral swabs to buy which of course I will pay for if necessary but just checking I’ve not missed anything with the free kits. Thanks. |

"You have to ask them for the oral swab. The line is unless your a male who has sex with other men you don't need it... I argue mine every time.
"
I am a straight man and always, always ask for a full card of tests. Just to be sure.
I dislike when they say "oh if you don't sleep with other men the risk isn't really a factor"
yeah, but I sleep with women who may or may not sleep.with other men, that sleepmwith other men, so it's all one and the same to me. |

I can’t see that option online, do you ring up to order? |

I test myself always every semester.
Do you know what is the most common and known hospital in the UK to do it for free?
From my perspective, home kits are not very reliable. I prefer to being tested by an authorized 3rd Party |

Every 2 months via SH:UK
I have one to do today as my last was at the end of August.
I could get an oral swab simply by ticking the box to say I'd played with men, but I haven't, so 🤷♂️. |

"I’ve never heard of an oral swab?! What’s that for? Anyway I use ‘free and clear’ tests, you have to live in Lincolnshire to get them"
Swab on a stick which you shove down your throat.
Not everyone has penetrative sex so handy for those that just engage in oral. |

"Think if you say have sex with women as well they send one. I’ve just had a full kit from sh.uk "
They don't.... we only get the vaginal and bloods.. or pee and bloods
Despite saying we sleep with a wide variety of people.
In fact in April they sent me a text to say they would send a throat swab out this time but in the future if I wanted a throat swab I had to go into the clinic...
In fact when we had our recent round of tests we actually went in ( as we needed our booster) and they told me they don't test women or straight men orally as a routine thing. They also said its incredibly hard for a guy to catch anything orally from a woman... I disagreed but that's what the NHS guidelines are apparently.

I think it's location dependent. I use SHL (London only). If you say you have sex with multiple partners at the same time they will send you (women) vag, anal and throat swabs as well as blood test. Very fortunate to have such a great service. |

That’s crazy, surely as there’s a risk there at all it should be up to us to test! |

With throat infections on the rise , it doesn't make sense to not be testing people with throat swabs |

It’s always worth following the STi free home test links from your local NHS website- their lab service providers vary by region, county and even city boroughs:
SH:24 sh24.org.uk
SHL.UK for most parts of London
WWW.SH.UK (Preventx)
Checkurself.org.uk
shwales.online (formerly FriskyWales)
thesexualhealthhub.co.uk
greenwichsexualhealth.org
As mentioned most allow you 4 or 5 kits a year so that testing can be done every 3 months. Urine sample for men, vaginal swab for women, bloods and a throat swab. If you say you have anal sex in the online application process they will include another swab (in addition to the throat swab) for a rectal sample.
I use SH:24 and it’s easy. There really is no excuse for anyone not testing regularly. |

Yeah they are apparently only sending throat swabs out to Males that have sex with males... this was from the doctor at the local clinic. And there is no where on my form to fill in first that offers anal sex .. not that I have it but women can get an anal infection without actually having anal .. if they get very wet through normal sex |

I might be paranoid, but I feel as a woman we often get overlooked in the sexual health stakes 🙄 last time I got an actual appointment at a GUM. I had to basically lie about symptoms after my male counterpart had got an appointment straight away as a bi male exhibiting them. I tested pos for a UTI, and then had to argue to still do other tests, and fight for an oral swab test. It was literally a case of them offering me a strip of antibiotics, and a here off you pop situation |

Pfft! Bi/gay/straight men get a better class of sexual healthcare in England. Offered free PrEP, enhanced sti testing, free HPV vaccine (I know up to 25s both genders now)... I'm assuming it's probably a funding issue... Apparently the main problem women have regarding sex is potentially getting pregnant 🙄 |

This annoys me no end. I'd love the HPV vaccine, just generally I think it's a great idea, but I also I have sex with bi men so surely I am just as 'at risk' as the bi men they will give the vax to?! Sadly at £160 a dose privately, and 2 doses needed, it's not an option for me to get it myself. Frustrating. |

Exactly! And don't even get me started on women paying for sanitary products, and in some cases, contraception, morning after pill. If men had to sort that shit out for themselves you can bet it'd all free! 😒 |

I 'think' that once you're over a certain age or actively sexually active (if you get my drift) then you could be past the point of the vaccine being right for you. That many ppl would/could have come into contact with the virus and naturally fought it off.
(I will say this is old knowledge from working in a sexual health and contraception service and I'm shit at remembering exact facts)

Just to update incase it helps anyone….
So after searching on every site possible that delivers to my area, none offered oral swabs routinely for females! So I emailed one of the sites - Lincolnshire Community Health Services - explaining that I wanted the full kit - vaginal swab, blood test, and oral swab, and got a reply saying it will be emailed out to me. Why you have to email them I don’t know, you can just check the boxes for vaginal swab and blood test kit! |

I always test every three months. At my local sti clinic. There is a time limit on blood taken to when it is tested for various tests. They also do urine and saliva. It's normally in the labs within the hour. Obviously some tests have to grow cultures . Never used a through the post test. |

The local testing clinic nearly gave me a heart attack!
Went in for a routine check 4 weeks ago( go every 3 months or so). They said if it’s all clear we’ll text you, if not, we’ll call you.
2 weeks later the phone rang and I panicked! Turns out they had fecked up the test and wanted me to come in for another one.
Got the ‘all clear’ text message today! Thank god |

Once a month and between sexual partners. It's been said here already but most of the online sites stop you ordering that frequently, but the GUM clinics don't so I go there.
Mind you, my ex was a sex worker so it's ingrained in my psyche to have a healthy paranoia and endlessly test. That and my sometimes risky behaviour. |

Personally I would get the checkups done at your local clinic. I got a false positive from a home testing kit as did a couple of other friends and we were actually all negative on double testing after.
At least at the clinic you know it's all done properly and it's much easier for them to do blood tests plus they can do a visual check if there's any concerns |

Many also now only offer testing If you have symptoms or were a contact of someone that does.
I have to say in all my years of testing... I've never had a false positive.
Also the clinic usually gives you the tests to go do in the bathroom by yourself. Except the bloods.
I do make sure I go every so often for a visual check... but the postal tests are great for those that won't or can't go to the clinics |

Was it a home testing kit that was an instant result, or lab? The swab tests I've had at a clinic they sent me off to do myself anyway. The only issue I've ever had with a home test was the blood clotting, but a quick fix as a new kit was sent for the sample. It was incredibly hard for me to get a clinic appointment, I had to take a day off work. I had to wait 3 days for the appointment, and nearly a fortnight for the results... I wouldn't be in a rush to do it that way again unless I really had to.

God I've done that two or three times. Those home blood tests things are a right pain in the ass. I always find myself taking an age trying to get blood out of my finger and then it's infuriating when I get a message to say it's clotted. Easier just to have nurse whack a needle in really. |

I go through sh.uk they do the testing and provide a linking service to your results to share. The link shows your name you signed up to the service under, and the date of testing.
I can order a test every three months. You fill out a questionnaire about your sexual activity each time to determine what tests to run.
I then get a home collection test in the post for blood, urine, oral swab and rectal swab (because I said I have sex with Non-Binary people). Results are normally back within a week of posting.
Tests cover Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. |

SH Wakes used here, usually test 2 weeks after any new meet.
No problem in getting the throat swab that others over the border have mentioned, straight males just choose which test is required, so I always have throat, urine & blood tests.
Very quick turnaround times here, sent test back in the morning & had the result via txt the following day on more than one occasion. Brilliant service. |
