Are we seeing a new covid pandemic?

Jump to: Newest in thread

From the land of haribos.

I dont think it will be one, have you heard the latest about it? Apparently there is a new virus in china and they are facing a new crisis.

Hong kong is on high alert as china grapples with hmpv, it is an respiratory virus that spreads from mainland china and it resemble common symptoms like cold and influenza, hmpv stands for the human metapneumovirus, they say that this situation arises after the onset of the covid pandemic.

They are monitoring the situation and who has not declared it a global health emergency yet.

What is your view about it and do you think that this is the next pandemic they are talking about?

There is also a big outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu in the US which has transmitted to cattle, cats and humans. It has also been found in water supplies.

There are concerns that it may mutate with whatever is in China.

We also have in the US the simpleton (with a shitty diaper) Trump who made a mess of covid and RFK Jr who is a anti-vax nut

So who had a pandemic on their 2025 bingo card?

I think it's known as HMPV. It's been around since 2021 and it's quite common.

HMPV isn't flu or covid as I understand it. It is adding to the problems the NHS is currently experiencing though.

Yes it is quite common and has been around for quite some time, what is concerning the authorities is the rate at which it has taken off this season. But so has influenza in many countries.

The flu is the same rates as it it was 2 years ago. Hospitals busy because hospital planners seem to love cutting beds when they build new hospitals and also we’ve had a net influx of over 2 million people in the last 2 years…. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out both of those things will put huge pressure on the healthcare system!

Yes and you look at a list of symptoms, put your money in, press the appropriate number and out pops a diagnosis and two paracetamol, sometimes a home plastering kit for broken limbs.

Hospital planners don't cut beds for the fun of it. They cut beds when they don't have enough staff to man the wards safely, you can blame the government and nhs underfunding for that.

I honestly think we’re all just hyper focused on pandemic viruses now, and to an extent, we’re jumping at shadows:

It’s winter. It’s flu season. Flu has been exceptionally virulent since we all stayed indoors due to Covid and didn’t get exposed to the currently dominant strains as they mutated.

HMPV has been endemic for the past two decades, and no-one would care if it wasn’t firstly coming from China, and secondly we weren’t tuned to expect pandemics after Covid.

Covid is still here too. Part of the cocktail of coronaviruses which circulate, which are more prevalent in the winter, and which sadly kill

vulnerable people at times.

I think bird flu is potentially the greatest problem of these, as it's very widespread and has already killed people. It probably needs minimal mutation, to allow I to become readily transmissible between people.

But the good news is that we know how to reduce the potential for infections.

My grandmother was in a nursing home for the last year of her life (2008) on the wall outside was a big sign and notice which stated don't enter if you have cold or flu symptoms as our residents are vulnerable to these ailments.

Unfortunately every year from prob time began the death rates for the elderly and infirm rise in winter.

This is not a new phenomenon since covid.

It's interesting the word overwhelming. And the spread of its use like a virus. Whta is the capacity of our hospitals and how many of those spaces are taken up with customers with flu?

It may be the case. But it may that a few weeks ago when someone posted the same, there were 2000 people in hospitals withe flu / respiratory illnesses. I'd like to hope our health service is not overwhelmed if 2000 people are ill.

Where has this happened?"

NHS have been obsessed with a clinical and management pivot towards reducing the amount of time patients spend in hospital. Flow is what matters - and the better clinical outcomes delivered by getting people out of hospital quicker demand more emphasis on day cases, and less emphasis on bed spaces. That means in turn less staff on night duty, and simpler less well appointed wards which are ideal for turning round day cases but no use for doing longer term care with older people with, for instance, respiratory complaints.

Flu vaccines reduce the symptoms of the flu for a vast majority of people. Those with underlying health conditions may still have problems even with a vaccine

Possibly, who really knows.? Without any facts people are just repeating the same shite they do about the last covid one. People double down without any substantive evidence at all. Media stoke it up with emotive language and agenda led story telling.

We build hospitals presumably to treat and house people. Then when they treat and house people in winter. Which happens every year without fail we start panic mongering for some reason. Our health service is with a few exceptions shockingly bad. And then we are surprised when it provides a bad service.

That aside. Let's hope there isn't another lurgy round the corner. We are not very good at coping with bad stuff.

It's been around for years.....

From news:

Fears of a Covid-19 style pandemic are overblown, the experts said, noting that pandemics are typically caused by novel pathogens, which is not the case for HMPV.

HMPV is globally present and has been around for decades. This means people across the world have "some degree of existing immunity due to previous exposure", Dr Hsu said.

"Almost every child will have at least one infection with HMPV by their fifth birthday and we can expect to go onto to have multiple reinfections throughout life," says Paul Hunter, a medical professor at University of East Anglia in England.

"So overall, I don't think there is currently any signs of a more serious global issue."

Possibly but a pandemic needn't be a systemic threat the way covid19 was. I think that word has all sorts of extra connotations now. The R0 of covid was 4 i think - HMPV is 2. It is far less infectious and was identified decades ago so has already evolved into a more benign form. The issues we may have come from capacity in hospitals when combined with increase in flu cases. The increase in flue cases is partly due to a decline in people TAKING THE VACCINE.

So...if you are over 50 or vulnerable, get your flu shot ffs.

I was reading a “sensible” post about this today on a reputable news site.

Happens every year apparently and it’s similar to flu in intensity. Something to keep an eye on but no big deal unless you have underlying issues.

The story has indicated that this one has got every more jumpy than usual because a) it’s origination is china and b) everyone remembers the Covid thing.

"The flu is the same rates as it it was 2 years ago. Hospitals busy because hospital planners seem to love cutting beds when they build new hospitals

How many new hospitals have been built in the last two years ?

Also how are beds being cut when new hospitals are built? Are they closing old ones and building smaller ones?

Yep.

The idea is primary care and community nursing take up the slack. However, this is impossible as one nurse can only travel to see one patient at a time (we do see couples fairly regularly). When we can time travel, we'll be able to do more community nursing is pushed to virtual, certainly for health visiters anyway, not sure how well you can get a feel for mother, baby and surroundings on a video call

You cannot dress wounds, give injections or catheterise people, virtually "

hence why i said health visitor but still no idea how theyre meant to check on a baby and mother 🤷

"We currently have a Flu Pandemic which is overwhelming our hospitals"
yup. I was unfortunately in a&e over the weekend and they were segregating those with flu. Was at least 11 people with severe respiratory issues due to flu or similar.

I also had to be kept in a day care ward as the main gyne ward has a covid and flu outbreak in it.

To the op.. its not a new virus in China. It is just a bit more severe this year

i am wearing a mask in certain places as I have done every winter since covid.

We were taught coughs and sneezes spread diseases as kids... so wearing a mask helps prevent that.

Yes but also dont give granny a novel virus. Building your immune system is one thing (think chicken pox parties) but covid was much more dangerous. You wouldnt hug a pregnant woman if you had measles. You wouldnt want to spread monkeypox around your friends and family or the general public. Listen to the nhs. If this was a conspiracy and overreaction it was one that involved tens of millions of co conspirators across the globe

An increase of about 4% in the population isn't stressing ICU capacity is it? That's a mental claim. GPs services yes but those migrants are all young healthy people. It is old and vulnerable people who suffer during flu season

as far as masks go in my opinion thats all, i think they do help reduce the spread as would a handkerchief with a cough but do absolutely 0% of preventing you catching it due the particle size

depends on the quality of thr mask and how you wear it.

Some good studies show the reductions in transmission along with other good practice.. such as hand hygiene and vaccines for flu etc x

i didnt really see anybody wearing proper masks at the time, mostly blue disposable ones and as for transmission i think it will reduce it on the bases that theyll contain large particles from a wearer

According to the bbc it's the worst winter overwhelming of the health service in a generation.

So presumably it's worse than the original generational overwhelming winter of covid? And that's including all those lessons we all learned from the last 4 year's of fighting covid.

More saucepans need to be banged.. Or maybe more hand sanitizer.

"The increase in flue cases is partly due to a decline in people TAKING THE VACCINE.

So...if you are over 50 or vulnerable, get your flu shot ffs."

Not only flu that has seen an increase in cases due to vaccine hesitancy. See also Measles, whooping cough and other preventable diseases.

WHO estimated a decade ago that around 1.5 million children died globally each year due to reduced vaccination rates. Can only imagine that number will rise due to the conspiracy theorists spreading misinformation in the last few years.

If you can get vaccinated.

Trouble is, often the issue was caused by misinformation being spread by the health services, pharma, gov etc which has never really been addressed. They created the open door and allowed the conspiracies to kick it in. There certainly needs to be more effort put into rebuilding trust because as you say if there are folks who would benefit from an available vaccine it's good they are helped. If they choose not to, that should also be respected however. Not sure why some folks seem to feel they should force interventions on other people.

Accurate, non sensational reporting would be a good place to start. But getting caught out by people getting winter illness in winter is not excusable. Further they will know how effective the flu vaccine is and how many folks have had it.

It's interesting also the myth of conspiracy theorists spoiling uptake of the flu vaccine. In 2015 the uptake was 71%.. In 2019 it was 72%..in 2023 it was 80%. Figures for 2024 obviously not yet available but seems the rates of uptake now are higher and yet we are overwhelmed than they were in 2015 when we weren't overwhelmed.

It's normal to have bad flu years, sometimes those choosing the vaccines get the strains to protect against wrong, sometimes a strain spreads easier and hits harder than is typical, sometimes a strain just mutates.

I also wonder if the decision to delay the start of mass vaccination this winter has contributed to the current predicament.

What would normally start late August/early September this time didn't start until the October 7th. Another two weeks to develop immunity now into late October.

The rationale was the earlier you are jabbed the sooner your protection wanes, so when flu is at peak protection isn't, well as we've seen many Hospitals getting more patients earlier than is typical.

There are also a lot of other things going round, RSV, covid and viral bugs.

does the common sense in nto going out if you have symptoms and basic hygiene fail to sink in

Very few places now have hand sanitiser stations outside them any more. Places to wipe down handles etc

You're just nit picking now. There's a new vending machine in the waiting room at our local hospital.

Is there space for one patient underneath and one on top ?

Don't know why patients aren't two to a bed. They did it in workhouses

Imagine if the health and justice ministers had this conversation and had a brainwave..bunk beds on the wards

Or go back to the twopenny hangover, could get many more crammed in then. "

When we can time travel, we'll be able to do more community nursing is pushed to virtual, certainly for health visiters anyway, not sure how well you can get a feel for mother, baby and surroundings on a video call "

But health visiting isn’t the same as community nursing, it’s public health nursing and they all have a variety of different nursing experiences.

Variation on a theme.

Let's say a man is COVID free and was hit by a car, and was doomed to die from his injuries.

Someone who helps him, transfers the COVID bug to him, and a few days later he dies.

On his death certificate, COVID would have been put down as a contributing factor.

Why ?

It seems that there are more women and children than men and around 56% of all the men are between 18 and 64. I don't know how many of these will be driving expensive cars with Ukrainian plates.

Those figures make perfect sense.

They also relate directly to the statement of "driven by a male in army recruitment age", which most would be safe to presume is insinuating that only men have fled Ukraine. The same men who should be in their own country on the front lines, if by some notion developed nations fight like it's trench warfare still (they don't) but still, it's barely any significance the age/sex/wealth someone has to be in another country, out the way of war.

No I haven't either. There's a competitively large Ukrainian refugee community around here but the ones who drive must be using UK plate cars

I imagine you'd need to be fairly well off to import your car rather than getting on when you arrived.

I attribute a lot of my use of this language to working in a factory for over a decade, not excusing it, but it became a normal to laugh and ridicule, even though it is not meant offensively in any way. I'm talking men and women of all ages races and creeds being (from an outsider perspective) seemingly racist, sexist, bigoted etc. to each other but will be offended if they're not seen in the same pubs at the weekend drinking pints like nothing has happened. Now I'm not saying I agree with being outwardly nasty to people, but I do believe in the phrase 'sticks and stones...', although not to be taken too literally, it does seem people have lost the ability to think they are talking to another who also has an arsehole. Right or write again. It was happening before the covid mullarkey, then we had about 3 weeks where we all tried really hard to help people out, and then all hell broke loose with people buying colossal amounts of toilet tissue and pasta while little old folks were left to go without... People accusing others of being selfish for no good reason than they could. And those habits seem to have stuck very easily. You make a great reminder to take a Moments pause before being a dick.

All colds flu etc are corona viruses. They all have the ability to redevelop and renew themselves. The human body adapts to counteract this and on it goes again. The big problem is when the media instill panic in the population.

Influenza is a corona virus and most cold aren't corona viruses either

"I don't care.

We were brainwashed and engineered into compliance before and I'm never going to do that again.

They can come up with whatever new lurgy they want. I'm not masking, disinfecting my shopping, isolating, keeping 6 feet away, using sanitiser 50 times a day.

I wish I knew then what I know now.

It's the greatest con job ever to fool the people of the planet.

They want us to be cajoled into fear and obedience. They are not going to get away with it again.

Who are “they” "

Government acting for WEF,UN,and big business.

Big business I can possibly understand. Why would they be acting for the UN or WEF?

Thing is. Many corporations now are bugger and more powerful than governments... Pharma, tech and many made significant gains and changes as an outcome. The move away from cash and work environments being just 2 of them. The move to online activities which can be controlled and monetised being another.

You are possibly look how much power Elon musk wields in this country, and other countries, he should have little to do with. The move to cashless society is mainly to hit criminals and the black market. Of course taxation is a driver too, was probably the same when society moved from bartering to cash I long time ago. All business wants to monetize everything they always have.

Worthing

"Same like the Ukrainian war... Another bullshit. They had a war from maidan incident. Hows that we see so many Ukrainians over here in expensive cars driven by a male in army recruitment age?!

How can you tell the nationality of people in cars?

A good guess is Ukrainian number plate and flag.

I just did a quick search.

It seems that there are more women and children than men and around 56% of all the men are between 18 and 64. I don't know how many of these will be driving expensive cars with Ukrainian plates.

Makes no sense re the numbers you posted.

In what way?

The whole thing is jumbled up, and doesn’t really relate correctly.

Ok. I probably didn't explain it clearly.

I quickly looked at statistics.

Of the total number of Ukrainian refugees, most are women and children.

Of the total number of male Ukrainian refugees, around 56% are between 18 and 64.

I don't know how many of that 56% are of fighting age or how many drive expensive cars."

That makes more sense. The " fighting age" is determined by which ever government is doing the call up.

I've seen a number of Ukrainian vehicles, and they seem to be on the more expensive side.

You didn't punctuate it as well no, but it still made sense.

However I see many people purposely being obtuse if they don't agree. And it's not just fab or it's forums.

That's the real pandemic though that's hurting everyone, not a respiratory virus, but the ability to be tolerant and understanding is rapidly declining. "

I wasn't being obtuse, it was as I said it. The author was good enough to clarify.
