HIV Hep b+c testing in hospitals

So 90 ED Departments across the country are now testing for the above on any bloods taken on all 16+ patients while in ED.. You can opt out of having blood tested but they aren't telling you they're checking/screening for it when they take the sample... Thoughts |

From the article.
"Under the programme, people visiting an ED are offered a discreet test which screens for the HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses when full bloods are taken. If the test comes back positive for the HIV, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C viruses, the person is offered specialist support and a treatment plan is put in place for them."
It says they're offered, so will be told. |

Always worth looking into anything news story's you hear or read online.
The NHS website clearly states people will be offered the test, not that it's done behind their backs or is compulsory. If you read the article it's in 89 hospitals in locations where there are higher than normal rates of HIV.
"Latest NHS data shows, over seven million tests have been carried out, finding over 7,300 cases of newly diagnosed Blood Borne Viruses. Including over 1,000 new diagnoses of HIV, over 4,600 new diagnoses of Hepatitis B and over 1,600 new diagnoses of Hepatitis C via the BBV programme between April 2022- January 2025."
How can this not be a benefit to people who didn't know they were infected? 🤔 |

What makes you think k they don't know?
Personal experience or something you heard/read somewhere.
As already stated, people are being offered the testing not having it done behind they're backs. They can opt out should they wish. |

Again. Is this your personal experience in an ED or just hearsay/anecdotal evidence?
I mean.....7 million tests have been done. I imagine you weren't there for all of them, surely? |

If I’d consented to a blood test already I’d be quite happy for them to test it for anything. I don’t see how anyone could have an issue with their blood being screened for things that could be detrimental to their health |

The right thing to do.
I still doubt the vast majority haven't been consulted. Having been in many an A&E over my years I've always either been required to fill forms out including giving details of any pre-existing conditions (done on ipads by triage nurses now) or been asked questions once being assessed. Including questions re HIV status.
But that's my experience across maybe half a dozen different hospitals. 🤷♂️ |

If you Google hiv testing in A&Es posters, you'll see the poster image.
It states it is routine but you can opt out.
When you have blood taken in hospital to investigate differential diagnoses (doctors have theories and seek the blood tests to confirm/rule out/ delve deeper), you do not ask what they are screening for (though you have the right). You tend to accept that they are SPENDING MONEY on tests for your health's sake. This is no different apart from the fact that something has become a public health concern in certain areas (something they want to reduce). |

I think when you donate blood they screen the blood for lots of different things as well.
One time I went and didn't even get as far as the screening and it turned out from my tests that I had pernicious anemia.
Had I not gone to donate blood regularly, I'm not sure when I would have found out and what damage may have been done.
Luckily there was no damage and I just have injections every three months to top up my b12 |

I have my bloods done every 6 months, (not on the NHS), but would want to know if I had an diseases or markers for sure!
If you are having bloods done then surely you are consenting to them checking your health and would want to know if there was any issues, that's sort of the whole point of them! |

I find that very hard to believe.
Must check it out.
I would have thought that if you were carrying a blood bourne infection,that it would be within your own and everyone elses best interests to be made aware of it,to get the proper treatment and to prevent more infections. |

I was told about this by my partner who works in ED, you most definitely are told about it at the time of the bloods being taken and are definitely being informed there and then that you have the right to opt out of having the additional tests done and if you choose not to the tests are not done. Like others have said I would be more than happy to have a free additional blood test done to make sure that I have nothing nasty. |

Why would testing for communicable diseases be a bad thing?
Surely it's better to know and be able to more accurately asses your risk profile than to go around giving people HIV and hepatitis without knowing?
I don't even see why they should need consent. It's not saying they'll store your blood data to sell to the highest bidder. It's to try to reduce the spread of disease in areas that are heavily afflicted by them. That's just what should happen, no? |

Interesting post this is, really as swingers every one should have no problem with it being done, as a few have said, why wouldn't you want to know.
May I ask out of the folks who have commented, how many of you regularly go to the GUM clinic (every 3 months) to get tested for all sti infections and hiv and if not, why ?
Not being nosey or looking for an argument, I have vast experience in these situations, cheers |

I don't see the problem with it. It's looking after people's health. I'd want to know if I had them.
If your particular department is not advising people then that's an issue but it doesn't mean all aren't. |

Due to my current situation I have my bloods taken every month to check my medication levels. The hospital know I'm bisexual and they always run a full screen everytime. Plus I still bisit the clinic and I'm on prep also. I can understand why anyone would be against it. Its same as blood types if you need a transfusion it's nice to know someone has checked the blood before they give you it. |
