"Been on allopurinol for ten years now,my main trigger is the artificial sweeteners in drinks"
Yeah, I really cut back on energy drinks after the first attack.... also creatine and protein shakes after working out. |

"Proteins often set mine off too,had to change a lot of my diet"
Eliminating and slowly reintroducing certain foods and drinks once on the right dose of allopurinol was key.
Along as i keep well hydrated and keep off the already mentioned stuff, I'm usually ok. |

"I have suffered it for over 10 years, only occasional bouts, no meds apart from Naproxen for it happens.
Trigger for me tends to be Whiskey "
Fair play to no meds.... unfortunately for me, once the gout has flared up nothing helps until it eases off by itself. Allopurinol does keep the amount of flares very limited fortunately. |

That's very painful.
I am lucky, usually a couple of naproxen sorts it out |

It is mate, wish it worked for me too. I really try to limit any anti inflammatories as i have hypertension too, obviously doesn't help with that either.

Yep I get the occasional flare, absolutely agony and wouldn't wish it on anyone, well maybe Donald Trump.
However, I've found the cherry juice is very good to treat gout, I buy cherry good, I was prescribed allopurinol but the possibility of side affects puts me off.
Try to reduce your intake of high in sugars fructose foods.. |

Since being diagnosed and treated for underactive thyroid 10+ years ago I’ve only had one flare up, and that was on a boozy week away in Greece.
It is without doubt the most painful ailment isn’t it folks!? |

"Stubbed my toe and got it , thought it must have been a fracture
On alluprinol seems to work, it's awful "
Similar experience here, I work on my feet all day and thought i must have accidentally done something to it.
Got home, decided to have a couple of beers to take to edge off (worst thing obvs) and put my foot up.
Waking up in the early hours feeling like my foot was on fire, wasn't fun, as i'm sure you well know. |

20 year sufferer, first event was ankle after a 15 mile run, initially thought it was soft tissue injury. Got worse through the day, managed a can you be here in 20 minutes GP appt, ah the good old days, sent to AnE for xray and bloods, showed raised uric acid levels.
Since then my knees have been the problem, usually triggered by poor meds compliance, learned some painful lessons along the way.
Interested to hear what people's side affects on Allopurinol have been. |

I've had two bouts of it over the last 5 years. If I feel it starting I take Colchicine, that seems to stop it in its tracks and its manageable.
I have cut back on alcohol especially white wine, and haven't had a flare up for a long time. |

Had it the last three days in my big toe. I am hoping that the Colchicine will kick in soon. All it is currently doing is turning my stomach into a war zone lol. Been here before, will get through it. |

I used to have it..initially triggered by prawns in a Chinese takeaway. At one time I was part of a clinical trial by Nottingham university testing different methods of controlling it. This resulted in me taking allopurinol daily. It did work. But a few years later my GP recommended me going on a low carb diet to combat type 2 diabetes. Not only has that reversed my diabetes but I don't get gout abd stopped medication several years ago. |

It was put down to the English ate a diet of loads of meat and high consumption of wine, cider and beer… where as the rest of europe had way lower meat consumption….. |

Quick Fix for Gout Flareup
2 Tablespoom of Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
Water to Dilute
I have shared this tip which has worked for colleagues and latterly family - I tried it for an inflamed knee injury and it worked as well but it tastes pretty "interesting" lol
One blast in the morning and another at bed time & within two days it really kicks in !!
Always keep yourself hydrated as well !
Give it a try and thank me (apart from the taste) |

I’ve been having flair ups for just over 10 years. Too much red meat and red wine usually triggers an attack in my big toes or ankles.
Colchicine is in my experience the best medicine to fix me up. |

About a year ago I had an incredible pain in my right toe. I was only 34/35 and am relatively healthy, so thought I'd just fractured my toe or something.
Anyway, nothing came up in an x-ray so they did tests for uric acid and turns out I have gout.
Have been on alupurinol since and thankfully had no pain since.
The doctor was great and told me that it's not my fault etc, like you wouldn't necessarily blame someone who has diabetes for having diabetes, it's the same with gout |

Stop drinking alcohol including beer, cut out fatty food, don't eat fish and as everyone else says, drink more water.
Be good for your pisser, your kidneys and your prostate.

I suffer with it and probably lead the most healthiest lifestyle of anyone I know. I don't drink, only eat organic non processed food avoiding foods high in purines. My dad suffered with it and I get two bouts a year every 6 months regardless. I'm convinced it's genetic. I read somewhere that diet only contributes to 30% of flare ups.
I have learnt over the years what helps when I get one. Don't walk on it, Drink plenty of water regularly to wash the uric acid out of the kidney. Take cherry extract tablets. I don't particularly want to go on to alipurinol and only take collichine. It will write me off for a week but it's usually done and dusted then. |

Thinking back to the times I have had it and thought what caused it.
Rapid weight loss. Uric acid is a bi-product when cells DNA gets broken down.
A grapefruit cocktail on NYE many years ago put me on my back in hours !
A fad for drinking real ales when I was younger - the yeast in it.

Been under a specialist for 2 years. Gout tends to occurr on preciously damaged joints. I get it in both ankles my feet, my knees and elbows. It's crippling with a flareup. Blunt trauma triggers mine. It's also a condition of metabolic syndrome which is also a barrel of laughs. Im currently medicated with no flare ups for 2 years and drinking 4 litres of water a day. Other than that no real dietary changes. |

My triggers are quite simple and as follows......
Too much alcohol.
Salt filled ready meals.
Not enough water.
Hope that helps. |

If you suffer gout flares your uric acid levels are clearly elevated, untreated or not managed properly can in some cases cause kidney problems.
I'd take the allopurinol personally. |

I’d agree with the above. If you are getting a couple of acute attacks a year then it’s not under control, and if it’s not under control then there is potentially long term damage.
I understand the reluctance to take long term medication but allopurinol has a good history of being safe, and definitely safer than regular flare ups of gout (however infrequent). |
