I was just wondering if there are any fellow sufferers on here?

I've been on allopurinol 3 years and only get gout attacks when dehydrated these days.

What are your triggers?

Yeah, I really cut back on energy drinks after the first attack.... also creatine and protein shakes after working out.

"Proteins often set mine off too,had to change a lot of my diet"

Eliminating and slowly reintroducing certain foods and drinks once on the right dose of allopurinol was key.

Along as i keep well hydrated and keep off the already mentioned stuff, I'm usually ok.

Fair play to no meds.... unfortunately for me, once the gout has flared up nothing helps until it eases off by itself. Allopurinol does keep the amount of flares very limited fortunately.

Yep I get the occasional flare, absolutely agony and wouldn't wish it on anyone, well maybe Donald Trump.

However, I've found the cherry juice is very good to treat gout, I buy cherry good, I was prescribed allopurinol but the possibility of side affects puts me off.

Try to reduce your intake of high in sugars fructose foods..

Similar experience here, I work on my feet all day and thought i must have accidentally done something to it.

Got home, decided to have a couple of beers to take to edge off (worst thing obvs) and put my foot up.

Waking up in the early hours feeling like my foot was on fire, wasn't fun, as i'm sure you well know.

20 year sufferer, first event was ankle after a 15 mile run, initially thought it was soft tissue injury. Got worse through the day, managed a can you be here in 20 minutes GP appt, ah the good old days, sent to AnE for xray and bloods, showed raised uric acid levels.

Since then my knees have been the problem, usually triggered by poor meds compliance, learned some painful lessons along the way.

Interested to hear what people's side affects on Allopurinol have been.

I used to have it..initially triggered by prawns in a Chinese takeaway. At one time I was part of a clinical trial by Nottingham university testing different methods of controlling it. This resulted in me taking allopurinol daily. It did work. But a few years later my GP recommended me going on a low carb diet to combat type 2 diabetes. Not only has that reversed my diabetes but I don't get gout abd stopped medication several years ago.

One chapter is about aphrodisiacs…. Stay with me here…

1500’s to 1800’s and more gout was rife here, the rest of europe had low rates of it.

It was put down to the English ate a diet of loads of meat and high consumption of wine, cider and beer… where as the rest of europe had way lower meat consumption…..

Quick Fix for Gout Flareup

2 Tablespoom of Apple Cider Vinegar

1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder

Water to Dilute

I have shared this tip which has worked for colleagues and latterly family - I tried it for an inflamed knee injury and it worked as well but it tastes pretty "interesting" lol

One blast in the morning and another at bed time & within two days it really kicks in !!

Always keep yourself hydrated as well !

Give it a try and thank me (apart from the taste)

About a year ago I had an incredible pain in my right toe. I was only 34/35 and am relatively healthy, so thought I'd just fractured my toe or something.

Anyway, nothing came up in an x-ray so they did tests for uric acid and turns out I have gout.

Have been on alupurinol since and thankfully had no pain since.

The doctor was great and told me that it's not my fault etc, like you wouldn't necessarily blame someone who has diabetes for having diabetes, it's the same with gout

I suffer with it and probably lead the most healthiest lifestyle of anyone I know. I don't drink, only eat organic non processed food avoiding foods high in purines. My dad suffered with it and I get two bouts a year every 6 months regardless. I'm convinced it's genetic. I read somewhere that diet only contributes to 30% of flare ups.

I have learnt over the years what helps when I get one. Don't walk on it, Drink plenty of water regularly to wash the uric acid out of the kidney. Take cherry extract tablets. I don't particularly want to go on to alipurinol and only take collichine. It will write me off for a week but it's usually done and dusted then.

Thinking back to the times I have had it and thought what caused it.

Rapid weight loss. Uric acid is a bi-product when cells DNA gets broken down.

A grapefruit cocktail on NYE many years ago put me on my back in hours !

A fad for drinking real ales when I was younger - the yeast in it.

Been under a specialist for 2 years. Gout tends to occurr on preciously damaged joints. I get it in both ankles my feet, my knees and elbows. It's crippling with a flareup. Blunt trauma triggers mine. It's also a condition of metabolic syndrome which is also a barrel of laughs. Im currently medicated with no flare ups for 2 years and drinking 4 litres of water a day. Other than that no real dietary changes.

I've been on allopurinol 3 years and only get gout attacks when dehydrated these days.

What are your triggers?"

My triggers are quite simple and as follows......

Too much alcohol.

Salt filled ready meals.

Not enough water.

Hope that helps.

If you suffer gout flares your uric acid levels are clearly elevated, untreated or not managed properly can in some cases cause kidney problems.

I'd take the allopurinol personally.

I’d agree with the above. If you are getting a couple of acute attacks a year then it’s not under control, and if it’s not under control then there is potentially long term damage.

I understand the reluctance to take long term medication but allopurinol has a good history of being safe, and definitely safer than regular flare ups of gout (however infrequent).

Have had it and it was excruciating.

Lessons learned were to drink more water, reduce processed meat intake and limit amount of booze.

Have taken Montmerency Cherry tablets and not had any further flare ups but not sure if that's just luck.

Yes very true, it does play havoc with your stomach, it does work though if you manage to get them quickly from a Dr.

I’m having my first attack in about 5 years now. I’ve been really bad with diet this year and the past couple weeks drank more beer than usual.

Absolute killer, kind of did forget just how bad it is!

I’m a sufferer. I take colchecine for flare-ups. Haven’t discovered my triggers yet as they don’t happen too often, thank God cos they’re agony when they do. Have been affecting my right big toe, but has recently spread to the Achilles tendon on the same foot

I keep a batch on hand in case of a flare-up, then order a repeat prescription when they’re done, ready for the next flare-up.

A pharmacist recommended Feminax (spelling?) for period pain, helps with gout too

I’m thinking mine has been caused by Covid which I had recently because I’ve also had my kidney stones playing up and causing a uti or possibly the antibiotics I’m taking for it I’ve just not felt right recently

speaking of knuckles I’ve been in pain with the one next to my thumb for quite a few weeks finding it difficult to open jars etc, but today the pain seems to have eased , guess it’s the colchicine working it’s magic last one to take tomorrow morning it’s been worth the unpleasant side effects, toe isn’t 100% but it’s the first time I’ve been able to put to wear shoe and sock on for a few days

If you have a flare up drink loads of water , you will see your pee go frothy in toilet which means acid is coming out of your body . A day or two I’m fine . Been on tablets for over ten years

Guinness is fine but think Guinness zero may be the potential trigger this time only thing I had different.

I get the occasional flare up in my big toes and index finger joints. My doctor said to drink lots of water to flush the crystals and take double the amount of ibuprofen for 3-4 days only. But make sure you eat before taking it. Tried naproxen but it makes me feel like shit. Was on allopurinol but haven't had it for ages.

When I get an attack its in my 2 feet, totally debilitating. I take allopurinol daily and if I get an inkling that an attack is immanent, I have an emergency drug called Colchicine which I take. Unfortunately because heart problems my painkillers are the strong cocodomol. If all fails, hello 2 weeks of torture! Joseph Mengele couldn't think of an experiment to match the pain of gout.

Montmerency Cherry juice.. not just any cherries

Purchase at holland and barrett or from amazon..

A small amount added to 500mm of water breaks the crystals down in uric acid which then escapes when you urinate,

You should notice this difference after a day or two.

I purchased the holland and barrett one for someone who suffered really badly with it, he was sometimes bed ridden and on the tablets from the doctor. after trying the juice and drinking for a few days then once a week after a couple of weeks he stopped the tablets prescribed and never went back just repeat anytime you feel it might be coming on as this led to no more flare ups.

one side effect reported is that you get a goods nights sleep...

if it works for you then You can thank me Later...

foot/toe much better not sure it’s gout but my knuckle on my right hand is swollen and painful and difficult to move my fingers it has been like it for a couple of months but strangely when I had the 3day course of colchicine it cleared up completely I had managed to keep off the tramadol for a few weeks but I’m back on them again
