Was asthmatic as a child, was ok then came back with a vengeance after catching covid.... anyone else in a similar situation?

Recently switched to Symbicort which seems to help more.... what are you taking to help you?

Symbicort is very good, if you take it properly.

I got put on a new inhaler on friday, it's called Fostair. Really good

Yes it is i agree, it was different going from salbutamol and beclu with technique, definitely better for me personally.

Is Fostair a combination inhaler too?

Yeah, Fostair is a combo of preventer and reliever, but can be used as a normal reliever.

I had a puff on it yesterday when i first got it, and i haven't breathed as well as that since i was a kid!

I've been on Fostair for about 8 years now, 2 puffs twice a day. Does the job. I still have Salamol as a 'handrail'. Fostair is too bulky to keep in my pocket.

You can get fostair in a normal ventolin type inhaler

I had asthma , hay fever from age about five. My asthma never ‘cured’ . But when at secondary school . My sports teachers pushed me very hard. To my limit and more . I was not that well built . Seven stone weakling. I ended up play for school rugby team. But the one that excel in was table tennis . Played for school, town and county . I hated sports teachers then. Now must admit . Very rare get asthma . I think ? Due to being very fit in secondary school years.

New asthma guidelines are moving away from salbutamol/salamol as relievers as the combination inhalers are more effective so don't be surprised if you GP or asthma nurse suggests you change and use the fostair instead.

That's why i was changed to symbicort as it has both Budesonide/formoterol in it.

So does Fostair but you can only use the 100mcg Fostair as a reliever, if you are on the 200mcg dose they will move you to Symbicort or another one called Fobumix.

Winters are actually better for me, breathing in the cold, clear air seems to help my airways

The summer heat is when it can get slightly worse for me

Originally on beclomethasone and salbutamol. Moved to fostair then symbicort. Am now back on fostair as my preventer and salbutamol as my reliever. Been on this for over year. Only had to use my reliever maybe 6 times.

Montelukast is available on prescription in tablet form that has improved my asthma, along with Fostair (a preventer and reliever combined). My GP switched me from Fostair to the cheaper generic version called Luforbec and my asthma deteriorated dramatically over 3 months. Same active ingredients but clearly not the same quality as Fostair.

Thanks for the advice though and glad it has helped you

My main triggers are sprays/deodorants, smoke, dust, extreme heat and weather changes. I've suffered with extremely dry eyes for years so can't tell if that's related or not.

Montelukast is usually prescribed for asthma in children but it can also be very beneficial for adults. Your asthma does not have to be severe but typically an adult would be prescribed them if the corticosteroid inhaler alone doesn’t seem to be managing their asthma. It has massively improved my asthma and I’d recommend speaking to your GP about it. I take Fostair 100/6 about 6 blasts a day.

Broken ribs would be contraindication for lung function testing. You will not be able to perform the test properly and results will not be accurate. Make sure you tell them prior to the test.

If you lose or forget your inhaler ring 111 for an emergency perscription...

Don't buy one privately from a pharmacy...

Salbutomol that way... about £9.

Fostair £120

Yes... some idiot went the other end of the country without her inhaler. Thank goodness for emergency perscriptions.

Solihull and Romford

I have an ex who for the last 3 years has struggled to eat...to the point she's seriously under nourished. The docs have so far been certain it's cancer. But last Friday, cancer has been ruled out completely.

So my question because of sore throats and a recent oral camera examination. Which showed that her stomach wall and the wind pipe leading from the mouth was seriously inflamed. Also, she's always seriously out of breath....a matter of struggling along using a walking frame, over a distance of 10ft. From anyones experiences above. Could asthma be the root cause?

Near Newport

I got diagnosed with asthma at 25. Turns out I have a rarer form that I’ve found out about 2 years ago (transpires my non-blood aunt has the same form). Respiratory consultant put me on Fostair and been fine since. She mentioned about starting me on Montelukast at the time as well but I declined as I didn’t want any more meds.

Fostair is probably the best one around - I issued it quite a lot when I was working in primary care and it tends to be the next step up from Beclametasone now

We're all different and it's just trial and error with meds. I suffer more with constant moderate breathing issues than attacks, the Formoterol in symbicort is more use to me than salamol personally.
