Being diabetic at Christmas

Let's be honest it's a really difficult time for type 2's.
I'm not sure how it affects type 1 other than altering Meds I think to accommodate??
But being type 2 is difficult particularly as people are overindulging and enjoying themselves, having to be extra strong particularly if you have a sweet tooth or in my case a love of mince pies.
So limiting one's self to the odd chocolate or skipping Christmas pud in favour of an extra roast potato.
And the real kicker is missing out on cheese thanks to these bloody injections that make me feel nauseous when I eat cheese.
How do others cope with avoiding the Christmas binge? |

I don't like to over eat at Christmas am not diabetic but just don't get the eat as much as you want then in January go on a diet and try to lose weight to get back to where you where. We spend a bit more on what we like. Rather than more. Quality over quantity. |

I have a load of allergies, mcas reactions to foods and fragrances.
To avoid wanting things I can't have I fill up on what I can.
Get creative with your veggies.
Making higger protien treats/cakes and diversifying drinks.
I also use simmer pots to offset the smells of things cooking so my brain doesn't immediately start wanting the thing.
I break up the day going out for a walk regularly |

It's going to be my very first Christmas as type 2 diabetic. So far, I have been managing to avoid most of the temptations, but it's not going to be easy. As I am still learning what I can and cannot/shouldn't eat. Luckily I will be doing all the cooking at Christmas, have already been very clear with my partner that I would not be buying things that are not good for me (we don't live together, but he will be here for Christmas) and if he wants anything naughty, he would need to buy it himself. Which I know is highly unlikely to happen .
I am definitely going to have some Warnicks and some Port at Christmas (probably not at the same time lol) and trying to stay positive. |

My liver function is back to normal after being waaaay off the charts in June.
I managed to slash my non-HDL cholesterol in half, back to normal levels. My HB1ac is back to normal .
No taste in the world, no sweet could ever make me feel what I feel at seeing those results. I did it all just with lifestyle changes and kept myself off medication which was my aim.
Thankfully I can eat cheese.  |

Thanks for your story. I am in a similar situation and if you have a moment,it would br great to get a brief description of the things you needed to do to get your levels back to normal - hope thats not too cheeky? |

I've been type 2 for quite a few years now and learnt that as always moderation is the key, but it's tricky when everyone else is chomping away.
I know my limits, the difference this year I've recently been off work with a re occurrence of my back injury so been far less active than normal then bugger me as soon as I get mobile I come down with the shingles, so my tolerance for carb's has greatly diminished.
We hike most weekends but as back has been bad not been able to but will definitely be walking boxing day.
Thankfully we don't host at Christmas so no need to do a big Christmas shop so tend not to keep goodies in the house. |

Start intermittent fasting. Go to one meal a day and make it low carb/sugar. You can reverse/put into remission your T2.
I recently learnt about the role of insulin in the body and how eating too frequently keeps insulin levels high and builds insulin resistance. Do research into a keto diet. Honestly I've been doing it for about 7 weeks, dropped 19lbs I only eat once a day and never felt better in various ways. I allow myself the odd days of "indulgence" and then get straight back on it the next day.
The podcast that opened my mind was a Steven Bartlett one with Dr Pradip Jamnadas. Search it on youtube, it's nearly 2 hours long but I think it'll probably be worth it. |

Ok so I am T2D - but also in remission & on a diet.
But I also have liver cirrhosis and cannot eat a lot of beef, or food cooked in fat….
So we are apparently having beef, with roasted everything
To top it off my sister wants me to come for Boxing Day where she intends on cooking steak pie…
I don’t really care about all the fancy food, I hate Christmas pudding, though I do like a mince pie….
So my days leading up to Hogmanay are fraught with danger & explosiveness in the bathroom….
As T2D you have nothing really to worry about… if you’re hosting do a meal plan with yourself in mind, & others will just have to follow suit

I now prefer to make my own mince pies, but yes, noticed the same, even just a little filling goes a long way and feels very sweet. |

Hubby is a type 2 diabetic. But fortunately he has been able to reverse this, he's lost loads of weight, trains regularly and eats a mainly keto diet.
At this time of year, he just eats and drinks what he wants, with the obly other time he does this is when we go on holiday.
Empathise with all diabetics, its a right pain in the arse but with a bit of a change to diet and lifestyle he has been able to manage it really well,

Haha it was 106 when first diagnosed mate got it down to 83 then stupidly thought I was better and stopped taking the metformin and glicazide then next test was 194 haha |
