I've done a thread about gout before, it's nearly that time of the year a lot of us are more prone to attacks through dehydration (yes i'm guilty of not drinking enough fluids myself )
Yes i am on allopurinol.
So fellow suffers, what are your triggers?

I got told I had it a feeling months ago. I didn't fancy taking medication so I've switched to a mostly vegetarian diet and more careful about alcohol (and what type of alcohol).
Had the occasional toe twinge but nothing of note. |

"Ironically, some triggers are through trying to eat healthily, which is a kick in the knackers
Salmon, spinach, oily fish, mushrooms , anything generally high in purines.
"
They're higher in purines than other vegetables but way lower than other high purine foods (red meat, shellfish, etc.).
Got walk that tightrope and stay well hydrated.

I think the worse attack i had was after eating liver. Too much alcohol was a trigger too. Had attacks for about 10 yrs Im on allopurinol now and havent had an attack since. Dont drink alcohol anymore (lifestyle choice not really gout related). |

I suffered badly last year, and was put on Allopurinol, I had a review of medication that I’m on a couple of months ago it was suggested my gout was caused by medication that I’m on diaretics specifically, |

"make sure the dr's say it is gout as calcium can crystallise too and has the same affect," that did cross my mind because I suffer kidney stones as i produce to much calcium, I think its called pseudo gout?, but my uric acid level was high, I stopped taking Allopurinol January blood test indicated it’s normal now

I wish I understood what triggers it…what stops the symptoms is paracetamol and ibuprofen…taken alternately over 24 hours
I usually get it in the ball of my big toe. But last week, it was my ankle |

Cheese is my main downfall. The number of times I got an attach through the Christmas period before I figured it out was amazing.
Normally I can spot the early signs and head off an attack by just being careful, drinking lots of water and just some over the counter painkillers but if not it’s onto the Naxroxen and last resort if it’s really bad, Colchicine. That stuff is amazing ! |

I used to be. Fairly regular attacks, no help from the doctors other than check your diet. Same cycle of gout, blood tests, confirmation of gout and told to check my diet. Then the pandemic happened and everything that could be done over the phone was. So I had a phone appointment with another doctor. He just looked at my records and my historic blood test and said we have pills for that, sort you right out. And just like that I have a cure after years of suffering. Allopurinol, worked a treat, no more gout. Stopped taking Allopurinol daily about 2 years ago. Only take it on the very rare occasion I get a tingling and seems to cut it off at the pass. |

Colchicine is great for gout I agree... not great on the stomach for some of us though 😂 |

Are you on allopurinol? If not I definitely recommend you go see your Dr, untreated uric acid can in some cases cause damage over a period of time. |

Aah, colchicine, was taking that after a short bout of gout,
Sat there one afternoon watching an old Roger Moore Film ‘North Sea Hijack’ and one of the sailors was going to poison the Hijackers with a handful of Colchicine tablets!!
“Hoi, hold up, run that back again!!, I’m taking that stuff!! ” was shouted as I spat my cup of tea out 😂 |

I struggled badly for it in my mid-30s, pre-transition.
Allopurinol and colchicine were life savers, even if they really upset my tummy in the first weekend of use. I threw up a lot and saw stars for a night or two.
In 2020, I started medically transitioning with feminising HRT and haven’t had a tingle or anything since.
Fun lil’ side benefit 😄 |

Red wine is awful for me, not had a flare up for a while now though, I've taken to drinking a shot of espresso every morning, no milk, no sugar, just plain black coffee actually does help a lot. That is actual medical advice now too, though the mechanism of action is still to be conclusively found. Not coffee with sugar, can't add milk, something about black coffee helps with uric acid levels. |
