Perimenopause?

Just turned 38 and for the last year I have piled the weight on.

Up until this month, I've had my period like clockwork. I'm over a week late.

I'm not pregnant because 1- the only person I slept with is my fwb and he's had a vasectomy. 2- I did a test and it's negative.

I'm in a little bit of pain. Almost like period cramps but no other signs.

Is this the start of Perimenopause and if so, what tips do you ladies have for knowing when you are going to be able to play? As this is massively cocking up my plans to play at the end of the month, as I'm worried it's going to put me out of action unexpectedly.

Any peri / menopause advice would be great ladies.

Peace and love.

Sounds like me when I hit 45, with the hot flushes and late periods, weight game and hair loss. I’ve not had a period in 4 months but sometimes I still get cramps and think it’s going to come but doesn’t 🤷🏽‍♀️

K is in the midst of the perimenopause and has started HRT.

She's finding her periods are all over the place, and vary wildly in length.

We've just decided we have to go with the flow (as it were) and just visit a club when we know she's finished, but it does mess plans up.

Sounds like the delights of perimenopause. It really is the gift that keeps on giving.

Research the symptoms, as there are way more than you would think, then talk to your GP. HRT is a Godsend. And can give you your life back.

Cold water swimming is great for your mental health and gives you a huge endorphin rush.

Go with it, it'll be around for years. Good luck.

Are you having any other symptoms? Usually the change in periods happens further down the line. On average we can put up to 10 kg on during perimenopause and the fact it goes straight on the gut like male weight gain is absolutely delightful. A lot of ladies believe it's the HRT causing the weight gain but it happens due to the drop in estrogen.

From the practical point of view, my advice regarding irregular periods messing up with the plans is, invest in sponge tampons. Most people know, or heard of, Beppy tampons, but they are expensive. I came across JoyDivision on Amazon, and they have been life savers. Yes, they are still more expensive than regular tampons but you can have sex with them in, and your partner should not feel any difference. They do take a bit of practice to put in and take out, but in my opinion, definitely worth it.

Find a doctor who's knowledgeable about women's health, discuss your symptoms and determine if this is perimenopause or something else like thyroid issues. You can make informed decisions from there

Very much this

Under the age of 40 it's more likely primary ovarian insufficiency and that comes with a whole host of problems that will require medication

I wouldn't assume peri on just a late period tbh op.

I started peri around 4/5 years ago. My symptoms still include

v erratic periods, aching joints, hot flushes and really dry itchy skin/scalp.

I used to be regular to the day, mostly, but things like, stress illness or hormone imbalance can all cause a late period.

Hopefully it'll right itself.

If it continues to change and you have other symptoms, maybe see your gp.

I probably should have mentioned, my hair's thinning, my eczema is flaring up one minute then I'm spotty as hell the next. I've had to switch all my skin care. Restless legs, itchy all the time.

There's a lot of other stuff going on.

It could be a number of things. First port of call is your Gp. As you are under 45 it is reasonable to run blood for hormones plus they may check your thyroid function. Hypothyroidism has symptoms very similar to peri. Have a look online for a list of symptoms and see if you can relate to them.

Thinning hair and itchy skin are also signs of hypothyroidism. I'm not qualified to diagnose you but just pointing out that your symptom might not be perimenopause

I'd get to the doctor for a check-up. I thought I was in peri-menopause but it turned out I had an extreme folate deficiency causing the symptoms.

I’m not far off the menopause, I struggle because I’ve got PCOS so don’t have regular periods anyway. For ages my periods were one bit of spotting every few months and the last one I had lasted 4 days. I do get a lot of hot flushes.

From my experience with my ex, look at getting a Mirena coil.

Somewhere in Norfolk ask :)

I have this and it can ruin meets and plans, when I’m light I can use the beppy sponges and they are a life saver because I can still have sex as normal just hard to get them out. I get my partner to do it for me as he can get in deeper than I can. We have booked a hotel for a club meet with lots of people this weekend but it’s anyone’s guess if we can still go, we won’t know until the day before

I’ve not had any chance in my cycle at all. Despite having a coil. I think menopause and the peri stage is just different for everyone. I did have awful brain fog and cried a lot. I’d always been fat so I couldn’t judge on the weight gain. It all got massively worse when I lost weight though, apparently that’s due to oestrogen being made in your fat. I now have a patch that stops me being a massive thundercunt and I cry less at emails now

Oh and even if you have a synthetic progesterone like mirena or the mini pill go get your doctor to prescribe you micronised progesterone. It can ease heavy bleeding, or mid cycle bleeding

Definitely sounds like perimenopause. There are still an awful lot of (male) GPs who will tell you that 38 is too young but that's bollocks. I can tell you from experience that it's something which can put an enormous strain on a relationship so it's important to get the symptoms addressed. How effective HRT is depends a lot on what you're given and how well the dosage is fine tuned. Too little and it does nothing, too much and the side effects are horrendous. Getting it right can take months and months of back and forth to your GP and some people just aren't comfortable with doing that.

All I can say is best of luck. It varies between women but I really struggled with it. But you do come out of it and I regained the hormones of a 20 year old!

Take care and be happy x

I’ve just started HRT for perimenopause symptoms and it’s been a journey (3 months now). Had my review and had to increase the dose with her advice that I should stop ovulating to stop my symptoms.

As silly as it sounds I’m not really sure I’m ready to contemplate that idea yet. So for now I’ll see how the increased dose goes.

The joys of being female!

Happened to my wife. Make sure you address this early with your GP, get bloods done and also ask for CA125 blood test as part of it. (This test identifies if you have a raised protein linked to ovarian issues). I know it's not unknown but you are very young to be going through it now.

You can use vaginal oestrogen pessaries or oestrogen cream as well as the standard HRT. They deliver localised oestrogen.

I’d go to the Gp, although it could be peri, it’s a tad early, and it’s best to rule out other causes before putting it down to peri.

Ask your GP Surgery which Dr specialises in Women’s Health and ask to see them.

The missus started on the gel a short while back and it seems to be doing the trick. She's feeling better after about a month. From talking to her the biggest was learning how many squirts to put on her.

I thoroughly recommend Davina McCall's Menopausing book, all different types of HRT are explained in there, with pros and cons.

very much not! Menopause is a phase every woman goes through, some earlier, some later. There is still not enough education about it, even just within the female population. Men need educating, too, so they could have better understanding what their partners/wives are going through and how they could support them instead of ridiculing them or throwing their toys out of the pram because their wife/partner no longer wants to have sex. And not every single woman would have exactly the same symptoms.

They all work differently for different women. Finding the sweet spot is a really boring case of long-term trial and error. Not made any better by your body changing in how it responds to HRT over time.

I apologise if you think I am an interfering male idiot.

Would more sex help menopausal symptoms?

I don't mean fucking necessarily.

More, a play with the vibrator each day watching erotic subjects and a good powerful orgasm.

It's known that orgasms help period pains for example.

sadly, part of the "wonderful world of menopause" is, for many women, loss of libido. It doesn't just apply to sex with a partner, whether male or female, it also applies to masturbation. There is just no "itch to scratch".

A lot of women have no libido what so ever so this not the answer. I don’t mean this rudely but this is such a male response 🤦🏽‍♀️
