Cervical screening petition

Has everyone or could everyone sign and share (on their social media) the petition to try and stop them changing the cervical screening (smear) from 3 to 5 years between them.

It’s on change.org website and search for

“Keep cervical screening to 3 years and not extended to 5 years”.

Think it’s something like 100 thousand signatures before they can take it to parliament. I’ve been emailing that Neil McAvoy local mp this morning who said he will bring it up in the Senedd and lots of people already on the case about it so hopefully something will be done.

Signed,

I ended up having most of my cervix removed and can no longer carry children because it took so long to get my smear.

They should have learned from Jade Goody, she was only 27, I think we should be offered smears as soon as we are sexually active and risk contracting the HPV virus.

Xx

Fucking joke

I had a big chunk of my cervix letz'd off 3 years ago because of high grade cell changes. Letting women go 5 years if they are hpv negative is fucking stupid as hpv is so common and easy to pick up they could pick it up later that day. Plus not all changes and cervical cancer are caused by hpv.

It's all to save money at the expense of womens lives.

Same actually, back in 2017. I found it horrific and the thought of going through it again is really scary.

Same here. Hence why I am not waiting 5 years. No way. I panicked booking my most recent one because I couldn’t get through to the surgery and then I was placed on a waiting list for an appt. That was bad enough!!!

Awesome. It’s getting close to 1 million signatures now. Surely they have to listen to how not okay people are with this?

I don't know if this info is correct but there a few posts being shared saying the Senedd will not recognise the change . org petition so there is now one running on the official Senedd petitions site incase anyone would like to sign that as well

You would hope. But I highly doubt politicians even care, regardless of party, let alone listen to what the public think especially if they have found a way to save themselves money that they can now piss up against the wall on something else far less important, like their own fucking expenses.

The changes should have involved consultation and a wider explanation. I believe they are evidence based and of course do not exclude anyone from investigation.

You can ask your gp at anytime for a smear or referral to a specialist, regardless of age.

None of the recommendations are to save money, this is public health.

Sorry the read this I was 28 when I had my first cancer and 31 with the second time, fortunately my gp trainedcas a gynaecologist and knew his stuff.

I was lucky enough to conceive and have 2 children, child birth was tricky due to not having a cervix that could dialte past 7cm.

Thank you, that's so sweet of you and I'm so sorry you went through that too. I'm lucky I already had a child so it could be worse in my eyes.

I can't imagine what that must have been like for you though, pregnancy and labour are hard enough without the added worry xx

I believe it's only if you do not have HPV that it changes to 5 years. Because with the uptake of the vaccine the rate of cervical cancer has dropped exponentially.

If you are shown to have HPV, they're hoping to be able to check you every single year. Moving the ones who do not have HPV to every 5 years will make room for those who do to be checked more regularly.

I think the age should definitely be lowered. Though I had mine at 19 because it was 3 years after I had my kid. I also think if you've not had the vaccines or are over a certain age it should still be every 3 years or every year. I had the jab at 17 but it covered less variants of HPV.

I understand why people are concerned and upset. I think the media have done their usual hack job of headline goading.

"Alice Davies, Cancer Research UK’s health information manager, said people should be aware the decision to increase the time between screenings was made on scientific advice and due to a new way of testing samples which detects human papilloma virus (HPV) and means doctors are better able to identify those at risk of developing cervical cancer.

Ms Davies said: "As the new test is more accurate at finding those at risk of cervical cancer, screening intervals can be safely extended from three to five years.

"If someone is HPV positive then their next screening interval will be shorter than five years. The new test allows women to be invited back for screening based on their risk of developing cervical cancer, rather than just their age.

"Overall this makes the programme more accurate, and means people don't have extra rounds of screening that wouldn't give them any benefit, while offering more screening to people at higher risk." from https://www.thenational.wales/news/19825736.public-health-wales-apology-five-year-smear-tests/

This explains it much better.
