Northern soul / Motown nights

A bit of a random thread but is anyone aware of any clubs/pubs/halls etc etc in South Wales who hold northern soul and/or Motown nights?
I currently travel most weekends back to the midlands to meet with friends up there, but would like to find somewhere more local if possible

Hi , there is a place in Glos that does northern soul nights , all nighter it use to be called the Roundabout years ago ,not sure wot it is now, lol, would love to find the place in newport for motown, we r origonaly from Bristol where there r loads of places that play motown, god miss those tunes lol gonna dig out some motown this week end and piss the kids off lol, |

I'm on soul source and continually looking for local but Wales seems to be passed by when it comes to northern soul and Motown! I'm trying to convince some of the DJs from the midlands to come down, even just 3 monthly, to run some all nighters or even weekenders to make it worth their while lol xx |

The niter in Gloucester is at The Wotton Hall and the next one is on Sat 19 October. Two rooms and you'll probably enjoy the main room but for me the room upstairs is so fresh and inspiring. Hope that helps. Thre is one very special guy DzJing that night lol   lol |

The roundabout has been gone for about 20 if not more years and I'm not aware of any places that do it here which is a shame  |

Not strictly south wales but might be close enough
6ts, Mod and Northern Soul at Pontardawe Arts Centre near Swansea on Saturday 16th November. Just off Junction 45 of the M4. We will be screening the film 'Keep on Burning - The Story of Northern Soul' at 6pm with dj"s following at 8pm |

Anyone see the recent Culture Show feature on NS done by the economics journalist Paul Mason?
Seen lots of features on it over the years, but this was really good.
Worth a look if it's still on I-player.
I went to a northern soul dance workshop at a festival recently. Still rubbish! |

For those of you who like Northern Soul and Motown, the wonderful Martha Reeves played Cardiff last night, in a small venue.
Not only was it a fantastic concert from a brilliant female vocalist, but the concert itself was preceded by a local DJ playing some excellent Northern Soul tunes.
Met the lovely Martha after the gig. What a fantastic lady, still got a great voice at 73 years of age!! |

There's a few old Retro Jocks around who have northen soul and mowtown classics (like)..
The old casino stuff never took off down here in south east wales , but personally I enjoyed playing it back in the early to late seventies, loved the high octane stuff........ |

Really enjoying old soul records at the moment. Been buying vinyl for the first time in two or three years - I blame you buggers in this thread and your enthusiasm for the hole in my wallet!
Always loved the Alice Clark tune Don't You Care and now have her eponymous album that's been reissued.
A deep soul album by Doris Duke called I'm a Loser arrived yesterday - looking forward to giving that a spin. Heard a track called I Don't Care Anymore at a party and loved it.
Think 2014 will be a year of soul music for me! Must try to get to a club night

Glad you had a great night. There was a Bob Sinclair around In the 90s - a DJ if I recall correctly. Would it be the same guy.
Out of interest, was it in South Wales?
I might try to get to an event in 2014
Hope to make some NS nights this year. Not sure I could make a whole weekender though .

Yes _ost sock! Same guy, track features bob Carroll and Michael Robinson - was voted best NS track for 2013 apparantly
But no, the all nighter wasn't in Wales, unfortunately Wales didn't seem to take on board the whole NS scene and so haven't revived it either!! Lol xx |

Is that better than the one in Skegness? Quite a few people I know on the soul scene said they were ok when they had decent artists but many of the attendees were just there for a general weekend and not to appreciate the music.....may stick with Bridlington, Whitby and Scarborough weekends x |

Yeah, I'm aware of this night and know someone who used to go. Should give it a go.
I've seen a few other things advertised over the years, mainly stuff linked to scooter clubs.
It's funny, I've always felt there's been a big following for soul music in the Cardiff area and have stumbled on a few nights.
Also, it's a bit ironic given that Cardiff City hooligans called themselves the Soul Crew. |

The original Cardiff City Soul Crew back in the late 70s/early 80s were heavily into their soul music. A lot of them were inspired with their dress sense and taste of music by the Quadrophenia movie that came out in '79, and the music soundtrack that came with it. A lot of the scooter boys in the Cardiff Cougars were also City hoolies |
