Just seen a tv programme BBC Rip off Britain - holidays.
Worth watching on iPlayer. Basically it's a requirement in French law to have Public Liability insurance in France. If you have travel insurance it's usually included. But many just travel on the EHIC. The programme shows a family getting a bill for 500,000€ for fire damage! |

Is it the same in this country though?
If i invite someone to our home and for example there was a loose stair tread and someone fell and broke their leg I could get sued?

If you are a resident, it's a requirement.
As a visitor, it's not a legal requirement, but it's a good idea, in case you cause an issue through an accident
Anyway, anyone with an ounce of common sense buys travel insurance to cover Heath and emergencies , wherever they go? |

I insured the wrong address once as I have to ensure various properties and when I advised the insurer they took a very casual approach. I often wondered what would happen in the event of a claim . I never did receive any documentation for the correct address.
As a result of this I stopped using an on line insurer and went back to using a broker .
More worryingly I gave
one someone advice on seeing a Doctor in Cap d Agde and they did not have any insurance cover and did not know what an EHIC card was . To compound the issue they were happy to travel abroad even though they had an ear infection .

people are very casual about proper insurance. We have occassion to visit doctors in France and hubby spent a week in hospital in Agde, insurance worked a dream but the cost without would have been 1500 euros a night. we worry about our house in UK being covered without us in it and the car but we are in France for a long while and it wouldnt apply to most people. |
