Gentlemën, Ladiës, Binariës and Whateveriës...

I've been invited to a 50th birthday party (yes, I know, the unbelievable shock and horror that I'm actually 'invitation-worthy') to which, no doubt, yours truly will be in attired in typical high apparel.

However, less than a week before this event I have been informed that this event is now going to be a 'themed party'.

I thinking "fuck this!". I had my 'wardrobe' all mentally prepared and now I feel pressured to procure distinctive clobber and gear that will serve its purpose for one time only.

I simply don't have the time, the wherewithal, the enthusiasm and funds to pull together an outfit so that I can fit in with the rest of the conformist crowd.

What's the theme?

Can you not just go looking dapper and pretend you hadn't heard it was themed?

The weather's wrong for that, but I'd happily ogle a picture

Hollywood? You're fine, Nero.

Smart suit, glasses, mackintosh (aquascutum no doubt) and I'm sure you own a fedora - Clark Kent it is!

(And I mean this as a compliment. Clark Kent is one of the all time greats - I won't have a bad word said against him!)

Men's clothes are shocking this season. Nothing but drab colours in the shops. Even saw burgundy as a colour, obviously the shops haven't seen kinky boots. I think a good well cut 3 piece suit is the only way to go. Anything less and it's drab

TG, this host had a "The Great Gatsby" / 1920s themed party last year and I was a tour de force on that front! But this time I'm feeling "meh".

Wear what you want and claim it's a small indie film made there in 1973 and shame on them for not recognising your iconic look. Then eat all their chocs.

Just add a pair of ray-bans to a dark suit and you can be a Blues Brother or a Reservoir Dog.

Fred Astaire in Top Hat. White tie and tails, a polished topper, white gloves and dress shoes, and a white silk scarf.

You will be the epitome of elegance, warm for the cold night, AND fulfil the brief.

Go looking dapper, get people to guess your character and either say yes to anything they suggest... or ...act offended if they don't get it "right"

And to chuck some more suit films in the mix, Scarface, American psycho, wolf of wallstreet.

In that case you simply have to arrive fashionably late.

Personally I have so much anxiety dressing for any social occasion! Being over/underdressed or not exhibiting the required level of grooming and/or social standing. At least you got those things down pat

This sounds very cosmopolitan for a humble country girl from the hills of Derbyshire.

I shall have to refrain from addressing anybody as "yoth".
