What's the UK's Best City ?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh, and Cardiff are the next 9 biggest Cities after London, but size isn't everything.
Let's here some love for Lincoln ! |

I love Ripon because it's often a pointless answer.
I have a soft spot for St Albans. It's beautiful, beautiful people live there and the accent feels like home.
Oh and Aberdeen. And Ely because it has one of the best bookshops and is very close to another favourite city of mine - Cambridge. |

"Excluding London which is so much bigger than the rest.
Apparently the UK has 72 Cities including exotic destinations like Chelmsford and Milton Keynes.
What's your favourite and why ?
"
You best hope Boo doesn't see this 😆😆 |

Edinburgh and York are very beautiful.
I've always loved the gritty industrial history/culture of Manchester but I feel the gentrification of the city centre has destroyed a lot of what made it great. |

I fell in love in St Albans once...
Also went to Aberdeen for first time last year and very impressed. |

"I liked Manchester too but I feel that would be better if you were with someone who knew the area. We seemed to spend a lot of the time wandering around aimlessly"
So do their footballers at the moment

Fricking Albanses. Always doing that nonsense. (jk 🩷)
Aberdeen is so beautiful. There's the more traditional university campus which is cobblestoned and granite and so lovely to walk through in the Spring, going down Spital. Some of it gets quite bad press and there are incredibly rough areas but I adore it and have so many happy memories of Aberdeen and the surrounding countryside. |

"Cardiff is hard to beat … history.. pubs .. restaurants… parks and you can basically walk everywhere… people are great imo … I vote Cardiff .. "
See I find Cardiff just depressive to look at visually mostly It’s got everything for sure with shops / food places etc but I find so gloomy looking |

Manchester will always feel like home
For me though, it's heart is lost, it's soul is waning
Capital investment and poorly thought out short termist local authority decision have severely diluted it's physical heritage
It has not seen the city flourish, it has seen it morph into a city of high rise apartments of dubious quality, a transport infrastructure that doesn't work (unless you are centrally based) and a population that is largely insular and not in the least cohesive
Community has ebbed away, certainly from the centre and has been replaced by profit drivers
It has my heart, but not my head, it has my love, but not my pride
So, I must look away from my home city and towards the places I relax in (as opposed to exist in) as being amongst my favourites
Liverpool
Lincoln
York
Towns like Beverley, Harrogate and Knaresborough also figure
I do wonder though, how many people from those places also look outwards, having seen the cracks and failures in their local areas?
Are our favourites invariably places we visit as opposed to the places we live?

Love York overall as a very liveable city. Beautiful, dynamic, well connected with gorgeous countryside surrounding.
Nottingham and Leeds for a night out
Ely is just really pretty, cathedral and shops. The fens area generally is wonderful.
Arundel for river, castle and quirky shops too! |

Hands down Edinburgh. I love the huge variety of things to do, how clean it is for a city, and the choice of amazing places to eat. But above all of that is the historical element. Love sitting in princes street gardens and looking up to the castle, appreciating the lush greenery against the backdrop of the imposing grey rock and stone. Walking down streets that have barely changed for 100s years. The stunning architecture that oozes secrets from the past. I swear some parts of it I feel I’m not even in the present day anymore 😌 love it. Yeahhh I’m not a city girl in the slightest, but if I had to move to one it would be to Edinburgh 100% |

A few I don't think have been mentioned:
Belfast, the new Titanic Museum is a big attraction but lots of other incredible history, decent nightlife.
Lincoln, the Cathedral is one of the wonders of Gothic architecture, the town centre is so compact you still get a feel of the Medieval city.
Has no-one mentioned Brum ? Even before Binaggedon the City was never the best looking but the Brummies are such nice people and the centre is very lively at night. They also invented Heavy Metal ! |

I'm going to upset a few Fab Mancs but I think it's overrated. Liverpool all the way for me. |

Will definitely be visiting Scotland again soon "
If you're staying in Edinburgh definitely worth a day trip to Dundee, felt like a young city with plenty going on. |

It's NOT fucking Portsmouth I'll tell you that.
Aberdeen is a depressing stinky place and that's in the summer even worse in the winter.
I don't think I've been to a city and thought this is amazing. |

West Wales and Cardiff |
I’m from Cardiff and have lived there most of my life. I do love the place and it has plenty to commend it. I am somewhat surprised by the amount of love it’s getting too!
I guess you see more of the downsides when you’re from the place.
I’d say Bristol is better for starters and Belfast is massively underrated too. Only one winner for me though - Glasgow.
I went there, not expecting a huge amount. I could not have been more wrong - amazing cultural stuff, great architecture, easy access to great countryside. Most of all though - great people . |

"Milton Keynes. It’s a work of genius. Where else can you go, stand literally anywhere and say you’ve seen the entire city (cause it’s all identical)? "
MK actually feels like of lot of European towns to me, probably because its relatively new its got lots of space and is very green.
There's a few Cities which would benefit from being knocked down and starting over, mentioning no names Plymouth. |

Fantastic countryside very close to Leicester, also great Space Centre. City centre pretty grim but could say that for quite a few places.🤷♂️ |

Lincoln is beautiful - stayed at the top near the Catherdral and walking down to the river is lovely.
People say York but I think Chester is better and has all the same features - the river is fantastic in Chester - too many tourists in York.
Liverpool is fantastic too - 2 cathedrals, so much fantastic architecture, friendly people and a nightlife that has something for everyone.

"Newport, because it's well lush and definitely not looking run down and deprived at all."
I really like Newport. Not as one of the top cities, obviously, but the music scene is really on the up again, there’s the new market development, a smattering of really good pubs and I know lots of excellent folks there.
People laugh, but I like the place . |

Glasgow for friendliest city.
Edinburgh for architecture and history.
But I think for such a small city. The beauty and history of Bath. It has to be up there for me personally. |

For many cities they offer something unique and mainly for most different historical and industrial aspects.
I've been fortunate to have visited many of British and Irish cities and many have pleasant aspects I appreciate...
But which one have I visited and was just magical that I instantly felt part of the furniture..
The people the vibe nights out whichever bar could always have a slight hint of naughtiness amongst some..
A city with a history that's occurring still to this day..a city of honest working class people with no airs and graces reminds me of my home town now city wrexham...
DERRY is one hell of a city.. |

I wouldn't want to be anything else. Being a townie you get the best of all Worlds where we are. Beautiful countryside scenery outside with Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester a short distance away |
