Best Female singers ever....

Aside from the legends (and national pride) already listed, a couple of left field Soulful voices to add to the list;
Carleen Anderson (she of 'Young Deciples' before going solo) the most silken yet powerfully smoothest of voices. Her cover of Macartney's 'Maybe I'm Amazed' one of the finest covers there is.

and Beverly Knight, arguably one of the UK's finest female Soul vocalists and (IMO) deserves recognition listed as equal amongst the all time legends. Seen her live and she absolutely has 'it'!

"Whitney Houston."
With you on this 100%
If anyone is in any doubt on this, get yourself over to YT and find her live performance at the 1989 Grammy's
Flawless
Immaculate
Even those who aren't into that kinda music can't fail to recognise how stunning this performance was |

I can never understand why Beverly Knight isn't a much, much bigger star than she actually is! Her voice is absolutely phenomenal! I think she's much better regarded within the music industry than she is by the public. |

Heather Smalls from Skunk Anansee had one powerful set of lungs on her and definitely not to be underestimated.
If course Aretha Franklin but am I right in sayin' her voice was now regarded as a national treasure? |

For me, being a great singer has as much to do with the ability to convey the emotion of the song as it does about hitting extreme notes.
A singer could perform a song perfectly in tune and key, hitting all the right notes but be soulless and completely kill the song, whereas someone who doesn’t have quite the range in their voice but completely nails it with a performance that you can just tell they’ve lived every moment of pain/pleasure in the song, that’s a singer. |

I have been down that Rabbit Hole many a time
It's an easy one to get into
Another great (and relatively unknown) singer is Vula Malinga
She was a singer is Basement Jaxx and regularly plays Ronnie Scott's in London
She was also one of the singers that did the BBC Northern Soul prom in 2023
So, if you want another rabbit hole to fall into, YT 'Vula Malinga BBC Proms 2023' |
