If you see a magpie….?

If you see a magpie, do you have a superstitious saying or a gesture?
I’m sure we all know the rhyme…
One for sorrow, two for joy, et cetera.
My grandad always used to salute if he saw a single magpie. I have a friend that used to say hello captain!! I’ve absolutely no idea why?
So it got me wondering if there are any other sayings or gestures that people do when they see a magpie and do these very depending on location around the country? |

If a see a lone magpie i always say hello
The other day I saw 6 together. I would say 5 males and 1 female as they were trying to mount her.
I had to say the rhyme to worldwide put what was 6, it was gold |

No.
I'm not superstitious..... so
If I see a pin I don't pick it up
I never do a stitch in time to save nine
Red skies in the morning don't mean the shepherd has sent a warning and I'll even put all my eggs in one basket
and stand on the cracks in the pavement and walk under ladders |

You'll be saying you don't throw salt over your shoulder next, or bang your other elbow if you knock one of them...what lunacy is this? |

I grew up in a very superstitious family, so there are lots of sayings for every occasion.
For magpies, they would typically salute and say "Good morning Mr magpie"🫡
I've only ever done that sort of thing ironically. |

I shouldn't have said lunacy , given that it's a state of mind.... I should have said fear, ignorance or false causal conceptualisation....
Uhmmmm I'll try to think of something irrational that I have belief in but it might take me some time. |

"Usually I give a hearty ‘Toon Arrrmmmyyy! Howway the lads!”
"
I was going to say this is a different conversation in the north east up here…
It’s either “fancy a pint” or lots of expletives |

"Tell it to f off and get out of my garden.
Why Glyn ?
I like to see them scaring the pigeons n nicking the eggs. "
Because they're thugs.
Though one did allow itself to be caught by one of my cats. Sadly, I had to make the cat drop the magpie. Neither of them were very happy. |
