I ran away from home when I was 15 and lived on the streets for a little while, not a pleasant experience.
Im lucky that I live in aa council bungalow so will be able to stay here for the rest of my life |

I don't agree that we are all near homelessness.
If your accommodation is secure and your not worrying about how your going to make the rent next week then you are not near homelessness. Same goes for substance abuse and mental illness.
Sure in the grand scheme of things any of our circumstances could change. But we are not all near. Not as near some. |

Not that far.
We’re all some sudden changes away. |

The problem with so many people renting nowadays is that their future can depend on the landlord’s own circumstances.
I have friends who were married for almost 30 years, with 3 grown up kids with grandchildren. They ran their own successful business and created a small property empire.
Last year they separated and are now going through a horrible divorce. They had to kick one of the tenants out of one of their properties so the wife could live there.
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the tenant who had to go through the rigmarole of finding somewhere else to live through no fault of their own. |

"I've got two spare rooms.
I couldn't see anyone homeless or hungry."
I think there's difference between working or temporary homeless and rough sleepers/homeless by choice.
I've just had a few of the latter move in a few doors down, it's not pretty. The smell of dr*gs, noise, amount of fights and on-street arguments, not to mention gangs of lads standing around is something else. There's police down near every day, they bring them back and it starts again. |

Yes I've been homeless with 2 kids and 6 mths pregnant. No job either.
It really isn't pleasant. Benefits system was crap, council not much better.
Thankfully I got a home, a job and have turned things around. |

So sorry to hear that but great you’ve turned it around.
I was homeless briefly as a child, single parent family, my Mum refused to leave the benefit office until they found somewhere to stay. |

Pleased to hear this and shows it happens and also can be over come but the feeling must be so difficult to deal with ..
The official system didn’t offer the support you wanted but glad you are on feet now …
If this thread can be good for one thing .. it’s give to food banks or donate old clothes if you can and never mock or ridicule homeless people… the saying there by the grace of god was never truer then in these situations…

Good for you you’ve made a success but.. Are you saying that homeless people didn’t make tough decisions or worked hard ? |

This..
A couple of months of no salary and many paying rent or a mortgage are in bother..
And it's always the unexpected that life can throw at any of us no matter how comfortable we are that brings great change..

I get what your saying to a point but life throws stuff at some of us that essentially means plan b is quickly a memory of the ability to make one..
Then when there's no plan c or d or the means to sort one or the other shit hits the fan..
Often it's the unthinkable that gets some.. |

Are you OK OP? Hope your situation is stable
In answer to your question no I am not, I know how lucky I am to not have to worry
As for certain comments on the thread this is what happens when you support the likes of Reform and swallow the propaganda they pedal to the likes of Daily Fail media

People can work hard and have every intention of not letting their family be without a home but in this day and age may have nothing spare to make a plan B |

My landlord has recently decided to to sell the property. So I have around 3 months to find somewhere new before being kicked out. This on top of trying to fund a new business and almost depleted finances, certainly has me on edge.
I can cope with a lot of things, but being homeless is one of my biggest fears. |

Whatever the circumstances that nake someone homeless, it is a horrible situation for them. I will never pontificate that should have done this and tgat or plan better etc. There are lots of reasons that people find themselves in that position and the rest of us should have empathy and provide help and support if at all possible. Life, if anythi g, is unpredictable. |

This must be the biggest worry for anyone who rents apart from the size of the rents some of you are paying. Sadly for the next generation it will probably get worse |

Thankfully not, but it could very easily happen if I split with my partner. I would have nowhere to go, no emergency accommodation is available, no family so I would probably end up on the streets. I think so many of us are so close to it without even realising. |

No, I've worked incredibly hard to ensure I have security.
We often had bailiffs knocking on the door as kids and lived hand to mouth and I know my mum often didn't eat so me and my brother could. I never want to be in that position again. |

I worked in housing for years and successive governments have really dropped the ball by not building enough social housing to meet demand.
This is probably the biggest cost of living issue no one really talks about! |

There was a very real chance I would have been, earlier this year, and there's a very real chance I still might be at some point next year if my LL continues to be a prick 😂 plus all the new laws that are coming in around renting etc. |

Heartbreaking on many levels, I hope something comes together on both health and home… keep pushing the local council.. are there luck support groups or family friends to call upon for practical help and advice … If so good luck |

I was chucked out of my boyfriend's parents' home one night. He was really d*unk. He kept my car keys, phone etc. I had nowhere to go.
I saw a light on in a house down the road of an older woman who lived there. It was 2am ish. I knocked on her door, she let me in. I lived with her for 2 weeks or so until I found somewhere. I'm endlessly thankful and loved her like family. |

I have been. A good job, reasonable salary, but circumstances found me living in the car for a time, the benefits system was not interested, neither was the local council, nor was the Secretary of State when my MP took my specific set of circumstances to them. Have just managed to find a flat, but the threat of losing it is something that hangs over my head and keeps me awake at night. It’s not something I’d wish on anyone |

2019 I left my kids dad, we moved 100 miles away back to my home town to stay with family, unfortunately in 2020 my family member was diagnosed with a life limiting condition so the house required adapting so the room we had to stay in was going.
We had to wait for the day the renovations start til we would find out what would happen to us, luckily we were given emergency accommodation but it was 10 miles away from my work and the girls school so what small savings i had were eaten up travelling. We then got told we were to move again back to our town so another move and finally got permanently housed in July 2021.
That year and a half was awful and stressful and I would not wish the worry on anyone. |

I’m fortunate enough to never be homeless owning my house and my flat outright, I say fortunate but it came from a lot of hard work and sacrifice I worry badly about things especially about work drying up with being self employed and decided to clear my mortgage before spending a penny on anything else to ensure my kids always have a roof over heads

I was almost kicked out from my first house due to a nasty break up and subsequent alcoholism which kind of stemmed from that. I literally had my stuff in boxes waiting to leave...Managed to sort it out at the very last minute with help from a family member...
I'm now three years sober (June 1st) and have a lovely little place in the middle of nowhere.
If that family member hadn't stepped in, I wouldn't be around today. |

Homelessness is one of the most clear cut examples of correspondence bias.
People consistently attribute it to some kind personal dispositional failing on an individual level.
My experience is that when people are on the bones of their arse all of a sudden their attitudes change. They try to get benefits and then realise it really isn't that easy. They start decrying the housing situation, rents, the need for a guarantor, how to get a deposit. Cost of living. Suddenly their friends fade into obscurity too.
No I'm not, but I've been there and it's shit when you're wandering trying to find the safest pace you can to sleep, because you are too exhausted, hungry and cold to stay standing. |

The state has failed miserably. Sold off 50% of council housing stock, over 2.1 million homes sold at one time discounts on right to buy. 75% of sale proceeds had to repay councils central government loans.
Private rented housing then grew exponentially under new Labour to over four million homes, increasing to nearer to five million under the tories. Tax changes and rising interest rates have started to see more private landlords exit.
Every council has a housing shortage and people living in hotels /holiday accommodation which is costing the state a fortune.
What makes me angry is the ONS knows exactly how many people are borne/ pass away/ divorce etc so the state should be able to plan years in advance how much and what type of housing is required.

I used to be homeless many years ago. I would sleep on car park roofs and top floor stairwells in Tower blocks. When I finally got all my shit together I volunteered at a soup kitchen. Then I started preparing and distributing meals for local homeless and vulnerable people. I used to let rough sleepers bath at my flat and had a supply of tracky bottoms, underwear and sweatshirts to hand out. Then covid hit and those people vanished. I've not done any outreach or volunteering since then as I'm always working. When I was down and out it was those people that gave a damn that made a huge difference in my life. |
