Does bad spelling put you off

I make an effort to spell words in full, correctly and with appropriate punctuation. I am sometimes a bit triggered when people don't make an effort but a good pair of breasts put lazy messages into perspective. |

What triggers me is when I've introduced myself by name yet when whomever writes back they don't spell it properly.
That happened at work too, I'd had the same manager for years but she always mispelt my name in letters and emails. Bloody ignorance!!! |

I find the keypad on my Samsung phone makes creating loads typos inevitable. Any message/email or text I type needs to be checked and my spelling has never been great which doesn't help. Might finally cross to the dark side for my next phone and get an iPhone. |

If I offend you with my grammar errors, I don't think you would be the type of person I would ever want to meet 🤷🏻♀️"

Keep asking my daughter what that means, she don't know either! |

I have noticed that I hit the P instead of the O in many messages. I type fast, have fat thumbs and rarely proof read before posting. Not so much in the general forums but with people i chat often with, I imagine it must be like an anagram puzzle sometimes trying to work out what the hell i'm on about.
Is that lazy ? Maybe. As Miss Licla said above, if it bothers you that mich I doubt we are that suited to one another.
I also seem to struggle with i and e placement. The whole I before E except after C is untrue and is no longer taught in schools. |

I don't mind some mistakes as I make them myself. I was never good at English in school and it never interested me but I do try.
Just because I make mistakes shouldn't go against me as it has no real bearing on who I am.

I only point it out because of the nature of the thread. I/He/She/Who/Whoever DOES something. Something is DONE to or with Me/Him/Her/Whom/Whomever. Importantly, it matters not if one is accompanied so "Tarquin invited me to the club" is correct (but unlikely - I know no Tarquin) as is "Tarquin invited her and me". Many would erroneous use "She and I" because of a prevailing ignorance in those who should know better beating the error into us as children. |

"Lazy spelling, yes. Poor spelling attributed to dyslexia or English not being their first language, no."
I'll have this answer please.
Obvious lazy spelling and things like text speak do put me off. |

It doesn't necessarily put me off. But without correct spelling and grammar I do often find it difficult to understand, and that would put me off from the perspective of just not having the patience to pursue the messaging.
Also, when people just drop a stream of consciousness in a message without you 'knowing' the way their mind works. That's a huge turn off for me. I mean if I have to ask for a translation or explanation every time that's waaaay too much effort for likely too little reward. |

It doesn't put me off at all as I'm aware that others maybe dyslexic, fat finger texting, in a rush etc.
I myself, am a fastidious speller & will automatically correct the spelling in my head but would never openly correct others as nobody is perfect. |

Spelling doesn’t. But how they express themselves can be a turn on or turn off.
My hands are quite big and I struggle with being accurate with the phone. My phone also has an opinion on the type of conversations I might have on fab, and tries to apply a lot of sanitisation lol |

I don’t mind others doing it but when I spot my own after the event (particularly in sent emails or letters) I let out a loud blood curdling scream. I hate it!
I once mixed up “principle” and “principal” and I still cringe from embarrassment when I remember it |

Text speak yes, bad spelling I suppose it depends on how bad - the occasional difficult to spell word no, but a whole paragraph full of spelling errors possibly.
I appreciate I'm throwing stones whilst living in a glass house here, my grammar and spelling could do with improvement occasionally |

There's a spectrum of bad spelling. Pobody's nerfect, casual communication demands less precision, and I'd never want to criticise when it's a case of dyslexia.
But sometimes it's laziness, sometimes people write things that are genuinely unintelligible. It takes work to decipher really mangled text.
It bothers me when it makes my life harder, I allow some grace for it, but after a certain point, it is going to grate. |

Depends on the what, where and why of it.
Texts no, but profile and static things yes.
Texts you fire off quickly and can't always correct (looking at you fab).
But the other you can take time over and fix stuff at any point.
So one is just a 'whoops' and the other is a 'don't care' which tells a tale. |

I've been diagnosed with ADHD, and I'm forever missing out words, or the odd letter, here-and-there as I'm typing without noticing. Same for just hitting the wrong letter on the keypad without noticing 'cause I type too bloody fast, so it'd be hypocritical of me to get annoyed when it's things like that, dyslexia, etc.
I feel feels like that you can usually sense when reading whatever it is, but for some reason, I do get a wee bit annoyed when folk just aren't even trying to understand and are just using the wrong words, grammar and punctuation all the time.
That gets me |

It used to.
But after working with so many people whose first language isn't English I've stopped instantly assuming bad spelling/grammar is the work of a moron.
People that rely on text-talk too much tend to give me a bad impression of themselves though.

At a point, yes. Not if you're misspelling the odd word or whatever, or if you use slang (so long as I can pick it up). And I don't care about silly rules like double-negatives or whatever else - people express themselves in different ways and the language is big enough for all of us.
If you're consistently misspelling/mistyping/whatever then it comes off as if you don't care - at least read back what you wrote to ensure it makes sense, for example. |

Spelling. No. I actually have a terrible habit on here of not reading my messages for mistakes before sending, so spelling mistakes happen.
I can't stand long, running sentences with no structure or punctuation. I shouldn't need to give myself a headache to read someones message. |

It maybe a generalisation but the majority of users will be doing the fab thing on a phone, with a dictionary or a laptop with a thesaurus which will point out any obvious errors, to me it’s bone idleness of the highest order, no excuses not to use your brain, intelligence is sexy and we have the technology to make us all look it |

All very well and true, but I'm still judging a poorly spelt profile or message and likely binning it off unless there's a really powerful USP to keep me interested. |

no because if i have an interest in someone my first question isnt to ask 'can I hAve A samPle oF yOuR haNd wriTIng pleaSe' and then check it like some professor.
look. people who go around spell checking and pulling people up on grammar were bullied at school and do it because it makes them feel superior. truth is half of them are posting a reply in their mums house with trousers around the ankles.

If it's not done on purpose then it doesn't really bother me as I know it can be a struggle for some people and don't want to judge and some words are fucking tough to spell! It could also be an auto-corrext issue where they're brain is faster than they're typing as it can look a bit weird.
If it's deliberately done text speak, then I'd see it as a bit of a lack of effort and it can put me off. |

Generally speaking, no, as long as it is readable. I have ADHD, so my fingers struggle to keep up the racing thoughts in my brain, resulting in regular typing errors. It’s annoying, but I can’t help it. |

As a dyslexic teenager, I had to sit English O level 5 times to get a pass in the days when every spelling mistake lost a mark. As a result I had to learn the hard way how to write properly.
So now two or three spelling mistakes in one 10 word sentence is irritating. But recently it has got worse. WTF is "YOUS"??? "You" is both singular and plural. It does not need an extra "s". 😡
Statistically 10% of people in Britain are dyslexic and 80% of those people are on Fab. 😂😂 |

“Yous” is just the way many people, especially working class, speak in West Central Scotland. |

They say yous to distinguish the plural "you" from the singular, a gap in standard English. It is likely borrowed from Irish English, and adds an "-s" to clarify a group is being addressed.

I’ve noticed that a majority of those who appear to have massive Issues with grammar and spelling errors are middle class, and are often snobbish and condescending. Not everyone, but such people do seem to be disproportionately represented. Perhaps it’s another way to look down on the “uneducated plebs”. Snobbery and classism in Britain is unfortunately still a huge problem, especially in Southern England. |

I disagree. Are you denying classism and snobbery exist in the UK, and that it shows in different ways? A shitload of research and personal experiences prove otherwise.
