I didn’t always, but I have grown to like them, and it makes me kinda sad because my mother loved them, and I never got to regularly take her to see them, only once, the King and I her favourite for her 65 birthday.

Not really especially if part of the plot is in the lyrics of the song. I just switch off

My son ( who was about 19 at the time) convinced me to watch Encanto. After about 4 attempts of getting through that awful opening song. I started to enjoy it. Later in the film they’re talking about Bruno. I was like who the fuck is Bruno. Both my lads were like they literally sang a whole song about him

I do like Rocky Horror, little shop and love Labyrinth and Sound of Music though ( and Moana but do not tell anyone)

Absolutely despise them. Can't watch.

...although there's always an exception to the rule. Love 'Rocky Horror', have a soft spot for 'HighSchool Musical' because it was my kids era, and enjoy some of the 'Music' movies that teeter on the edge of the genre; 'Rocket Man', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'School of Rock', 'Yesterday'.

'High Fidelity' doesn't count for this thread, but I'm gonna mention it because I watched it again this week and it's a musical classic, but not a 'musical'!!

Mostly hate musicals. But a handful I have loved. Bat out of hell, I have seen several times and will again.

Absolutely detest them with a passion.

The quality of acting and singing seems to suggest that a musical is where you end up when you fail.

Or some might say you need even more skill to often act, sing and dance at the same time and to ensure you do that in synchronicity with other performers.

Fail at what exactly?

Most people working in musical theatre trained precisely for musical theatre.

The competition for roles is high.

You do not get there without the skills.

I'd have imagined that musicals actually help your singing and acting?

I like theatre, but hate musicals. I just hate everything randomly breaking out into cringy songs.

The only caveat I put on the above statement is I would totally go and see the Book or Mormon. But then I suppose there's always an exception to the rule.

Mr

Yesterday, Easter Sunday, I watched the 1973 version of Jesus Christ Superstar as it seemed appropriate for the day.

"No, I really don’t like musicals. People singing their feelings and being all earnest about it… mega cringe.

Animated musicals are cool, though."

Agreed. Only tongue in cheek/comedic ones like The Book of Mormon.

I wouldn’t say I’m a fan, but I’ve seen and enjoyed a few.

For me it mostly depends on the type of music, such as We Will Rock You, Rock of Ages, American Idiot
