Evening I’ve got an Audi A5 2021 Sportback Black Edition which up until recently had a break servo restricted fault but now has “Brake: Fault Safely Stop Veichle”
Anybody had anything similar for B9.5? |

I've had some experience with this.
There's a sensor in the braking system that monitors pressure. If it fails you get the code.
Could also however be the abs module failing.
You need to ideally get it plugged into see any specific codes that may show.
Carista is a really good value diagnostic device...well worth considering. |

AI to the rescue. Or not. You’re not gonna sleep well…
That message is serious, especially on the B9.5 A5. “Brake servo restricted” escalating to “Brake: Fault Safely Stop Vehicle” usually means the car thinks you may not have full braking assistance (even if the brakes still physically work).
On a 2021 Audi A5 (B9.5), the most common causes people run into are:
Likely causes (in order of frequency)
1. Brake servo / vacuum supply issue
• Faulty brake booster (servo) or vacuum pump
• Vacuum leak in hose/valve system
• This often starts as “servo restricted” before becoming a full safety fault
2. 48V / electrical system voltage issue (mild hybrid cars)
• Low battery voltage or DC-DC converter instability can trigger brake system warnings
• These cars are very sensitive to voltage dips
3. ABS / ESC module fault
• Faulty wheel speed sensor or ABS hydraulic control unit
• Can escalate into full brake system warnings
4. Brake pressure sensor / master cylinder sensor
• If the ECU sees inconsistent pressure readings, it assumes failure risk
5. Software / calibration glitch
• Less common, but sometimes a module reset or update resolves it (usually after battery drop or jump start)
⸻
What you should do right now
• Do not ignore it or keep driving normally.
• If the warning is active constantly: treat it as reduced brake assist risk
• If the brake pedal feels:
• hard/stiff → servo/vacuum problem likely
• normal but warning persists → sensor/ABS side more likely
⸻
Quick checks you can do (no tools)
• Any other warnings? (ABS, ESC, battery, steering)
• Does the brake pedal feel different than usual?
• Did it happen after:
• battery replacement
• jump start
• cold weather
• short repeated trips
⸻
What Audi usually finds
In real workshop cases on this platform, it’s often:
• brake servo (vacuum booster) replacement
• or vacuum pump failure
• occasionally ABS module or wheel speed sensor causing cascade faults
⸻
My honest advice
If you currently still have the “Safely Stop Vehicle” message:
• don’t drive it further than necessary
• get it scanned with ODIS or VCDS (generic OBD readers often miss brake subsystem faults) |
