Do you stick to your principles?

Jump to: Newest in thread

From the land of haribos.

I watched a video about it and there he talked about his work and how it all was fine but after a while they wanted him to work on sudays, that was one thing he didnt want to do to, but he did it for a while to show that he cared, but in the end he told his boss that he cant work on sundays anymore and quit his job, the reason he had it as a principle not to work on a sunday is because it was his rest day before the new week would start.

I find a lot of people tend to abandon their principles when it gets difficult or challenges them. I also try to stick to my principles as much as possible because it is important to do and not give in to too much change.

An interesting thing about sticking to ones principles is actually not as easy as one may think it is, it requires, balance, wisdom, flexibility, not just that that but also knowing when to adapt.

It would be interesting to see if you stick to our principles, do you find it is to stick to them and not let other things come in its way too?

Principles generally aren’t principles until they cost you something. If they don’t cost you then they are just nice ideas.

I stick to my core principles.

It is easy to give into pressure but I also believe in compromise. If everyone sticks to their own agenda there will be an impasse.

Nothing moves forward

Whether is be in a personal or professional setting, I will always stick to my principles.

I always found in the past that if I went against my core values, it would end badly.

My principles are circumstantial. I'd like to tell you that they aren't because that would make it look as if I had the courage of my convictions under any circumstances but one of my core principles is honesty and I'd liebif I told you I stick with them under any circumstance.

As an example I believe that you should care for loved ones if they are vulnerable or very elderly. In reality the cost to your primary relationship, mental and physical health is too high.

So no, I don't believe that one should stick by their principles, it's not as straightforward as that

Principals god let's go at it then, think I preferred the painted toes post as this is a massive discussion post! So principals combined very closely with a moral compass. Instilled in us during nurture and then refined as we grow through experience and increased wisdom. Obviously some do not have the best start or role models and maybe born very poor or rich but this does not define them and growth is possible.Experiences can shape and sometimes the most extreme experience can create the most steadfast principles. I don't think anyone ever knows until their principals are tested and this could be from very mundane things chipping away at them to a very dramatic chain of events and split second decisions. All you can do is hope you will make the right call and hold onto the majority so you can still look yourself in eye !

It all depends on what you mean by principles and what kind of principles. Are we talking about character? certain behaviours? Or limitations?

I like to think I’ve got a set of principles that I always stick by and these are hopefully reflected in my actions I.e being honest, caring, respectful - these principles I’d say are things that are set in stone and I wouldn’t change/waiver on.

However, I have other principles (don’t laugh) such as, I like to do my grooming and cutting my nails on a Thursday, treat myself to a nice lunch on a Friday, visit family on a Sunday, a wank on a Monday ( - joking) etc. these principles I’d say aren’t set in stone and I’m happy to be flexible with them…maybe not the Monday tug

It is but not at a cost to your other loved ones. Principles are frequently about compromise

Erm, nah. Not really?

In recent years ive taken on progression as apposed to fundamentalism.

I like growth and evolution. You know a better way? Show me it works and lets implement change.

I have standards which I adhere to and ethical principles which guide my life. If I give my word or say I will do something, the I will.

These can change or evolve based on my growth as a person my my experiences through life.

Do I stick to my principles? Yes, where I can, I try to. Principles are different from values and convictions. Values are what matters to me, convictions are what I believe, and principles are the standards I try to live by.

Do I get it wrong sometimes? Absolutely. That's part of being human. We're all gloriously imperfect. The important thing isn't being perfect, but trying to make decisions that align with my principles, values and convictions rather than simply taking the easiest path.

In fact, one of my principles is that I'd rather be gloriously imperfect than exhaust myself trying to be someone else's idea of perfect.

My principles are just that, mine. Anyone who gets close to me knows what they are and I live them.

What people who don't know me think is not important.

Consequently, there are a lot of people that I don't bother talking to

In the military I put my career back by several years for having principles and sticking up for myself. It's great being able to tell your boss to shove the job up his fucking arse and call him a thick wanker and they can't actually fire you.. just got moved.

Principles are really a privilege of age. Anyone who claims to have none is fooling no-one, not even themselves. They know.

And they are moveable as they are knowledge or benefit formed. That's an age benefitted opinion from a Christian who has daily battles with their principles.

I'd never lie to a customer or my team, or throw a fake sickie. Unmovable in 35 years of work.

I know plenty of people without any, being inflexible as you age isn't principled, it's fear.

And some people just go wherever the wind blows them

Which principle is that ?

Sound like the principle of making bad career decisions

In fairness, I would never lie either. To anyone. So I get where you are coming from. And yes, the people who blow with the wind are there.

Considering my principles of standing up to bullies who happen to be my neighbours has cost me my house - yes, i stick to my principles. 13 years I've been here and I adored my pad. I now loathe it.

Sticking to my principles has cost me dearly in the past. Today they are a benchmark and which side of them I fall is dictated by circumstances and reality. I rarely bend far from them though..
