Can opposite sex be friends?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *hagTonight OP   Man 1 day ago

From the land of haribos.

I read an interesting thing about it and that was whether or not the opposite sex can be friends, it mentioned things like yes they be but how important it is to have boundaries and not develop any sexual attraction because that could ruin the friendship, just keep it strictly being friends.

I agree that it is important to keep it separate to just being friends, that got me thinking on how I have had it. I have had some female friends, but I have mostly had male friends. I guess because you do sports and have that in common with them more like football.

It would be interesting to see what your view of it is if both can both be friends, do you have both as friends or just one and why do you think it is like that, is it like me how your interesting also decides it too?

Yes of course people of other genders can be friends. They are just people.

They are different friends to Dave and Barry at 5 a side. Having a dichotomy of views in your trusted friendship circle is required to be a rounded person.

Yes despite what harry met sally says it is possible. I've had male friends which have remained platonic. I've even shared a bed with one. But attraction can rear up and complicate things. I prefer friends with benefits. Best of both workds

Some I've had other kinds of relationships with over the years. Most I haven't. Regardless of their genitalia.

People who don't let their partners have friends of the opposite sex are insecure 💜

I’ve known one of my closest friends for almost 30 years.

She was single when we first met, then dated a guy for a couple of years and then split up with him- so if there was ever any thought of anything happening I’ve had two opportunities.

While I absolutely love her to bits as a friend and would do anything for her, there’s just never been any attraction between us.

Luckily, her husband is also one of my best mates now and a braver man than me, as by her own admission, she’s a pain in the arse to live with at times, a true feisty, opinionated Irish woman who takes zero shit and gives zero fucks.

So while she’s an absolute pleasure to spend time with, it’s always just been as friends with similar taste in music and humour.

I’ve had, and still do have platonic female friends where there’s been no desire for the friendship to be come anything more than that. I can see, and be around women without the need or desire to want to sleep with them.

Like someone said above, it’s important to have friends of the opposite sex to give you a rounded outlook on things.

Yes, my small closest circle of long term friends are women. This might be possible because I only find about 1% of women sexually attractive. However, my female friends are far easier to be in a deep emotional friendship with than men and they are much more interesting.

Gay men often have lots of female friends, so it's certainly possible. With straight and bi men, there will naturally be some more tension. Whether or not it will cause significant issues depends on the individuals and whether any have some underlying motives.

I've seen such friendships work well, but more often than not, problems seem to develop at some point. This is particularly true when it comes to partners.

Women are statistically most likely to cheat with friends. As such, I can honestly see why husbands or boyfriend may feel uncomfortable or apprehensive with his partner hanging out with a straight or bi man.

Men and women can be friends but its not uncommon for the man to secretly want more. You will find that in most cases if not all, that men would sleep with their female friends given half the chance. Does that invalidate the friendship in anyway? Not necessarily but it does make it difficult to ignore and generally impossible to overlook. Just be mindful as a woman with multiple male friends that regardless of what they say they do infact fancy you and always will no matter how much they protest it. It is just human nature and some women (not all, don't lynch me!) Do take advantage of this with male friends and adorn themselves with multiple male friends that will do allsorts for them in the hope that one day she turns around and declares her undying love for him. Like it or not it is usually the case and cannot be argued otherwise. Why else would a man keep females around as a "friend" men are simple creatures, if they like the look of you they want to shag you and hence keep you around to look at and display to his male friends almost as a trophy. Its an archaic way of looking at it but in reality it's the truth in its most basic form.

It’s not about capability; it’s about probability. By looking at your profile, it appears that you have a preference for women. That means, statistically, you are far more likely to feel attraction to a female friend than someone who doesn’t prefer women at all. While you can certainly maintain boundaries, a partner sees that baseline preference and reasonably calculates a higher risk of attraction developing over time compared to a friend with no such preference. It’s not biphobic to acknowledge that your specific orientation makes the 'just friends' dynamic inherently more complex to trust. Research consistently shows that men report higher levels of sexual attraction to their opposite-sex friends than women do.

I always think the guys who say that men and women can't be friends are just waving a big old red flag.

You can't fathom a value to women that doesn't involve access to their vagina, and you choose to surround yourself with people who feel the same way? Cool. Bye.

If you can have purely platonic friendships with other men, then the only difference is the genitalia. If you believe men have something to offer above that, but not women, that's on you.

Yeah it's common to make friends with people who have similar interests and outlooks and hobbies. But there are very few spaces that are 100% single sex. And the choice to not acknowledge that you could have other things in common with someone who engaged in the same hobbies and interests because they're just a hole to you, that's telling 💜

Exactly. You aren't the only one to have the same private chats with men, and the contrast with what I'm seeing here is stark. In private, guys admit the 'sex thing' is often in their heads. Yet here, the replies are incredibly vague, using phrases like 'I don't want sex with all my female friends' to technically tell the truth while dodging the real question: 'Are you attracted to any of them?' It’s a deliberate avoidance of specifics. They know that admitting attraction to even one female friend validates the tension partners feel, so they hide behind broad denials.

Plenty of studies, including Bleske-Rechek et al (2012), have shown women consistently underestimate the level of sexual attraction their male friends feel toward them.

I'm wary of making friends with men and it'll take me a lot longer than it will to make friends with a woman.

This is solely down to experience, I don't think a man has ever invited me for coffee because he wants to be my friend but plenty of women have.

I, the male half, used to have a long term platonic friendship with a woman. I even went on holiday with her and her kids a few times and we went out for meals, stayed in and watched films etc. we originally met online with a view to a sexual relationship but she clearly didn’t fancy me enough! Despite that we went on to become really good friends until she moved away. A couple of years into our relationship she did grab me and snog me. I would have happily taken things further but nothing led from it. Maybe she just wanted to see if there was anything there for her. There obviously wasn’t. Despite that, and how we met, I never really wanted more than friendship and that friendship because the friendship we had was great. Sex would have complicated it. We were both technically single at the time which made things simpler. So yes, I would say it’s possible.

"Yes we have friends that are just friends male or female..

In an ideal world, you’re right. No one would ever risk a valuable friendship for lust, and boundaries would hold firm forever. But the reality is that 'good' friendships are ruined by this dynamic all the time precisely because they are good. The deep trust and intimacy that make the friendship strong are the exact ingredients that fuel emotional and sexual affairs when attraction slips in. We see it constantly: the 'just friends' label collapses not because the friendship was bad, but because the closeness made it easy for feelings to grow unnoticed until the bond was broken.

"What men say to women and others isent always the whole truth 🤣 but from chats iv had with groups of men over the yrs its pretty clear most men - yes will be friends with women but they will have the sex thing in heads , unless the people i talk to the minority lol

They know that admitting attraction to even one female friend validates the tension partners feel, so they hide behind broad denials."

Tbh its a thing iv come across many times , women say they that so and so if a really good friend , like a brother etc , but the man will admit in private that that yes do indeed hope that one day they will become more .

Unfortunately most women wont except that because im guessing they dont see it that way and cant understand why a man would feel this way , yes im in a very male dominated circle ,

This is why men always look at women's male friends with a sence of dought , maybe this isent the best place to ask this question as not many men will openly admit it as it will show them in bad light

"I, the male half, used to have a long term platonic friendship with a woman. "

Not telling you how you feel or what you thought but reading that I get the impression you were in love/lust but it wasn't reciprocated. X

Yes I think they can be kust friends .I have had several men who have been good friends over the years.

In saying that two of them did try it on at some stage of the friendship and our relationship changed after for the worse.

So yes mostly I belive it can be true but it would be naive to believe that all of those friendships are purely platonic.

"Why do so many men talk about the 'friend zone' as if it's a bad thing?"

Because in my opinion, the romantic or sexual value of them is so low and/or that’s how they determine their self worth.

I use this term a lot but in a jokingly, light hearted way. In the friend zone with plenty of women, but I’m very happy being there with no desire to change that with those specific people.

Very observant, and literally proves that ultimately men do want to have sex with their female friends quite ironically.

Men have been pressured to be more feminine and not express their true nature in order to please women. Ladies, men are predatory creatures genetically. Men will get jealous and men do want to have sex with you. Its human nature and it's in their DNA. And before the preachy people jump in, no this doesn't give men the right to force themselves on women and no one is saying that here, but it is important to be realistic in life and not be naive. A friend is a friend and if you are a female with a male friend just know that he most likely would have sex with you given half the chance so let's just be honest and grown-up about this and not live in a dream world.

Wow, I just returned to catch up and I am amazed that some think all men are wired as they are. Yes, you can surround yourself with men of a similar mindset, it may even be that common ground that creates your circle but we are all individuals. The idea that men can't be just close friends with a woman may be outside your comprehension, circle of male friends understanding and your experience but that doesn't mean every man is wired like you.

Not all men, just most. There is always an exception to the rule of course. My husband is a rare one too but he is a man all the same. He would never go behind my back and being in this lifestyle puts him in a very unique position, but if a female friend made it clear they was attracted to him and he was to them too, he would definitely have sex with her with my blessing of course. Its naive and immature to pretend that men aren't like this. But as you have made clear, not all men just most men.

You assume I and others who disagree with you only see this because we surround myself with like-minded men, but that’s not the case. My own friends are a mix of gay, straight, and bi men who often have nothing in common with each other. They have different careers, interests, and backgrounds. Yet, despite their differences, the pattern remains: in private, men who are attracted to women admit that attraction to female friends is a common undercurrent. This isn't a 'circle' issue; it's a shared male experience that transcends individual mindsets. Dismissing it as 'your group' ignores that others and I see this dynamic play out consistently across a spectrum of men who otherwise don't agree on much else.

If you are a man that thinks all men want to do is fuck everyone regardless of who they are, what their place is in your life and most importantly what they want. Maybe its time to ask yourself if you might need some therapy or at least a diagnosis.

Perhaps then you will start to see women as people rather than meat puppets for your selfish wants.

With that logic as one poster wrote above. Bisexuals can not have any actual friends.

You’re attacking a caricature, not an argument. I don't think anyone is arguing all men view every female as 'meat puppets' or want to sleep with everyone. I argued, among other things, that research consistently shows men, as a group, report higher levels of sexual attraction to their female friends than women do, and that this creates a dynamic partners must navigate. That’s not saying men are incapable of friendship; it’s saying attraction is a common variable, even in 'good' friendships. And regarding bisexuals: no one argued they can’t have friends. The point is that if a bi person leans heavily toward one gender, as I previously highlighted, it introduces a statistical probability of attraction that partners and female friends reasonably factor in. Dismissing this as 'needing therapy' is just a way to avoid engaging with the actual data on how attraction complicates platonic bonds.

I think at base you're right but this leaves the element of self control and respect out of human interaction.

I can definitely be friends with attractive people who in another life I would have sex with but...I don't in this life because I'm an adult in charge of my actions

If anyone is being friends with the sole intention of having sex with you they aren't friends regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

I will be very very honest , in my experience , and without me wanting to just agree because it'll make me look good in front of people I will say most men who have a female friend ( and when I say friend ) I mean someone you can ask for a roof over your head or call at 2 am for a lift etc , not a FB friend that that man given the opportunity would sleep with them , this isent an opinion iv just come up with , this through conversation iv had on lads holidays football meets , and chatting to large groups of men while stuck in some unpleasant places for a long lengths of time

Yes there will be the odd bloke who'll enjoy being in the friend zone for whatever reason but them men are definitely in the minority , a lot of women understand this and then a lot just wont because they dont want to think of there friend having that mindset

Enjoying being in the 'friendzone' surely means you like having a friend

I'm not daft I've been around long enough to know that if men approach me in any setting (unlikely nowadays but it used to happen back in the day) they aren't looking for someone to add to their friend group.

I have one male friend who I am 100% sure has no desire to have sex with me and the feeling is mutual. Our daughter has at least one male friend she sees for dinner on a regular basis and her husband has female friends

Playing devil's advocate then. If the question was asked, is it possible to be friends with somebody of another gender who is better looking than you. Perhaps there is an argument that the ugly side of the friendship will want more.

Hollywood has made an entire library of movies on that.

Still not getting my head around how people see their friends as more than friends, when they are just friends.

"I read an interesting thing about it and that was whether or not the opposite sex can be friends, it mentioned things like yes they be but how important it is to have boundaries and not develop any sexual attraction because that could ruin the friendship, just keep it strictly being friends.

It’s hard to speak as there will always be exceptions but I’ve never seen a straight man who is close friends with an unattractive female. There can always be that friendship and it might be a true meaningful friendship. I also feel that if said attractive women come on to her male “friend” who would fuck her without a seconds hesitation.

So in my experience, you can have a friendship with a male but there will always be that sexual undertone to it where, ultimately he wants sex.

I may well be wrong, I don’t think there is a definitive answer

Easily. I have friends of all genders and love them all dearly.

It's important to spot any sexual or romantic feelings, as it's potentially a big complication. Great friends are worth their weight in gold and I don't care about the gender of them

No, that’s not how it was. Yes, I wanted sex when we first met but that faded after a very short time when it was clear it wasn’t on the cards and the friendship developed. I would probably have had sex at any point given the chance but being a thirty something man at the time, I would have had sex with most women given the chance. In fact during our platonic relationship I was, and having a long term affair with a woman from here. As she was married, I still classed myself as single.

You just proved the point. You admitted your friendship was contingent on her saying 'no.' If she had said 'yes,' the friendship would have ended and become an affair. That is exactly why partners don't trust 'just friends', because the men themselves admit they are often just biding their time.

"I, the male half, used to have a long term platonic friendship with a woman.

Not telling you how you feel or what you thought but reading that I get the impression you were in love/lust but it wasn't reciprocated. X No, that’s not how it was. Yes, I wanted sex when we first met but that faded after a very short time when it was clear it wasn’t on the cards and the friendship developed. I would probably have had sex at any point given the chance but being a thirty something man at the time, I would have had sex with most women given the chance. our friendship was contingent on meeting. The mutual desire to find someone for a sexual encounter is what facilitated that. If she had been so inclined we might well have well become friends with benefits but the friendship would have ultimately been more important than the benefits. I wasn’t biding my time. Yes I would have had sex if offered it a plate but it was not something I ever pursued or even thought about after day one.

You confirmed that your 'friendship' wasn't based on a lack of desire, but on a lack of opportunity. By stating you 'would have had sex if offered on a plate,' you validated the core fear: that for many men, the platonic label is only secure because the woman hasn't said yes. Partners don't necessarily fear men who are actively plotting; they fear men who, like you, admit they are willing and ready to cross the line instantly if the circumstance changes. The fact that you were simultaneously having an affair with a married woman proves you have no moral barrier to sex with 'friends', only a lack of opportunity. That is why so many male partners are sceptical: because men like you admit the friendship is safe only as long as the woman remains 'not inclined.'

My best friend is a woman

We met at nursery school and went to all the same schools.

She knows me better than i do (including my fab adventures)

She has borrowed my porn (VHS Tapes, before the internet) but never been intimate

not local even if it says I am

From my experience yes but it’s only short term until someone gets into a relationship and then the friendship dies until that relationship ends and suddenly they are back looking for emotional support from their “friends” to fill the void left by the missing partner.

It’s a very annoying trait.

"I read an interesting thing about it and that was whether or not the opposite sex can be friends, it mentioned things like yes they be but how important it is to have boundaries and not develop any sexual attraction because that could ruin the friendship, just keep it strictly being friends.

Women are able to become platonic friends with men, however lots of men aren't, or see being friends with a woman as being "put in the friends zone"

Love each other to bits, even shared the same bed but nothing will ever happen…true friends.

Straight and bi men often exhibit a selection bias where sexual attraction subconsciously dictates their social circle, leading to a friend group disproportionately composed of women they find physically appealing.

Yes. I have several male friends I've known for 30+ years. There has never been any attraction, romantic tension, or need for "boundaries" because they're friends. Contrary to popular belief, not every interaction between a man and a woman is a sexual opportunity waiting to happen.

I would suggest that if you’re a man and you are emotionally intelligent you would be saying yes. Those saying no are typical blokes who think with what’s in their pants and see women as sex objects.

It happens way more than people think. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen it. You’re right, it’s worse when the women are pissed. A huge part of the problem is this myth that 'it doesn’t count because he’s gay.' So many straight women assume that just because a bloke isn’t into women, any grabbing is just harmless fun rather than a violation.

It goes both ways. Straight men often project their own behaviour onto gay guys and fear being hit on. Meanwhile straight women treat gay men like a human petting zoo because they think their sexuality makes them safe to touch.

Straight allies are welcome. But there’s a line. When the bar gets overrun by hen parties or groups of lads turning it into a regular club, the vibe shifts. It stops being a safe haven for gay people and starts feeling like just another place where they have to watch their backs. They're invited, just don’t outnumber gay patrons to the point where they don’t feel safe in their own space.

To be fair, I’ve seen a handful of gay men cross the line with women too, and when that happens, it’s called out because it’s wrong. No one has the right to touch another person inappropriately without consent. I strongly suspect at least one of the men I saw doing this was actually bi, not gay, which perhaps explains the behaviour towards women.

However, let’s be honest about the scale. The sheer volume of straight women grabbing, groping, or treating gay men like props, especially when d*unk, dwarfs the reverse. It’s become a routine part of the night for many gay men.

I’ve witnessed gay men touch breasts, sure. But I’ve never seen one grab a woman’s vagina. Never.

Compare that to gay men. I’ve seen women grab a gay man’s penis on numerous occasions. Actual genital grabbing!

"Men and women can be friends but its not uncommon for the man to secretly want more.

This is basically the truth 🤣 there will be a few ( very few ) men who will have a female friend as they find them easier to get on with etc , but i dont know any personaly ,

I also believe that most women with male friends see them as just that because why shouldn't they , but the men are hoping for more , some wont admit it

And there are some women who will know that men are secretly after a shag lol and will take advantage for there own benefit, again why not if the men a daft enough to do it 🤣
