Yes of course it is, we gain more than due to tourism in London, one of the biggest tourist spots is Buckingham Palace

Don't think many people would want to visit if it was falling down.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool republican but whether there's a antiquated symbol of the class system living there or not, it's a place of historical interest and should be suitably preserved (although it really not much to look at compared to most European royal residences).

Turn it into flats for asylum seekers after the work is done

The Royal family are the UK's biggest benefit scroungers. As for bringing in tourists; you're having a laugh.

No one goes to Paris or Dublin because They are Republics then?

Suggest you watch 'Unlawful Killing' on Youtube (if it's still there) as we're not allowed to see it in the UK.

That shows what this bunch are like.

Net: Brand Finance estimated that the Royal Family's net contribution to the UK economy is around £1.155 billion ($1.8 billion) for this year.

...

According to Buckingham Palace, sustaining the royal family costs Britons 53 pence, or about 81 cents, per person, per year. The total came to about 33.3 million pounds (about $51.1 million) for 2012-2013, according to the Palace, up from 32.4 million pounds the previous year.23 Jul 2013

I think the money should be spent (although I'm pretty sure that's the highest end quote they got there!).

Unfortunately not everyone is going to agree with spending the money but if I only pay 53p per year to them, then I'm not really going to worry about it, if it was hundreds of pounds per year I may feel differently, I pay far more for a tv licence each year and I never watch the

BBC (or rarely), that I begrudge paying!!

The royals do bring in tourist from all over the world, sure people visit other places for different reasons but most tourists come to London to visit all the landmarks and this includes buck house, in other countries their are other landmarks for them to visit.

They also do (I'm talking wills, Kate and Harry here) for people and because of who they are generally people to sit up and take notice of them.

The royals will always be like marmite for people, personally I love them and all they do and love it when the country get together and celebrate royal occasions (I bet all you haters loved the extra bank holiday when wills and Kate got married?), if we didn't have them why would tourist come to London? What about all the things that bring the country together? Who is going to manage that?

All my thoughts are my own lol

£369m that will go back into the economy, providing jobs and growth.

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Much of the cost will be spent on wages and material supplied by British companies helping give British employees financial security and a better standard of life for their families and dependants ....

Those companies and their employees will pay tax back to the exchequer ,,,, the wages they spend on good and services will cascade through the economy helping create more jobs and helping give more workers families and their dependants a standard of living they might otherwise not have if the money being spent on the palace was not invested in the 10 year program of refurbishment..

so surely the actual cost to the economy is negligible because the money used never leaves the wider economy ....

Why would it be ok for the Royal family to sleep rough if it's not ok for anyone else to sleep rough?

£369m might sound like a lot of money but seriously, it's a drop in the ocean of public expenditure and would be swallowed up by the NHS in less than a day.

£369m over 5 years and savings on running costs, to maintain a historic building of national importance which generates more than that per annum for the economy. It's a no brainer.

"they may bring in 500m in tourism but where does that money go ? how much are the royals worth ? the state of our country people sleeping on the streets food banks no housing we pay taxes to repair one of there many statley homes swear if i had my way they would be sleeping in central point tomorrow

you're wasting your breath ruby some just want to down the monarchy and build a council estate so we can see more episodes from Jeremy Kyle on the site where the monarchy has been sitting since the turn of the millennium

What's next Westminster abbey to become a set of flats for homeless people with a soup kitchen

"So the state can fun the richest woman in the world's home yet there are families who are homeless. Mm what would I do .

She can have the return but she must make lots of rooms available for homeless families

"

In the richest cities in the world there are homeless people, for many reasons, mainly poor support to mental health issues in my opinion

The answer isn't to target the affluent and ignore history and things that make your country great and bring in so much tourism and interest to the benefit of the country

The answer in my _iew is to get to the bottom of these issues and tackle them directly. Not make random cuts to things unconnected and very important

It's a very long time since the Queen was the richest woman in the world. And I'd say it was more of an official residence than a home.

I live in a 4 bed house, should I be ashamed of that because there are homeless people?

Hang on... nobody is saying poverty doesn't happen and isn't important. However over the course of history these things such as the monarchy have become a part of our society and our cultural identity

I agree there should be more equality in societies but that shouldn't be at the cost of our history and tradition.

There are ways to have both if the governments do their jobs properly

No because you paid for your house

.

While I can accept the importance of the royal family ans I quite respect them.they work hard , some of them. The two young princes a breath of fresh air. I know they are part of the rich heritage of our wonderful country.

It's important to fund our heritage , and yes they do open it up to the public and raise funds that way . So could they just pout the entrance fee up a bit to help.

I think its the timing of the announcement, on a day when people are raising money to help fund very worthy causes .

If it wasn't today it would be another day that would offend someone else. Linking it to children in need is just meaningless. Personally I think the Queen and the immediate Royal family earn their keep and regardless of who lives there or doesn't, it's an asset of national importance which requires investment to keep it safe and functional.

Its an expensive building that has legitimate repair costs which they have avoided carrying out for the last 2 decades or more.

Its crumbling in some parts. Better fix the problem now properly, than pay for a patch up job and then pay again in future for a bigger repair.

This country is stuffed to the rafters with beautiful historic buildings, yet the primary residence of the royals is some dull block of flats with a half hearted Regency style facade, 1960s office blocks have more class.

Let the dump rot. Spend the money on preserving what little is left of this country's Brutalist architecture, mainly as a 'fuck you' to Prince Chaz

Let's have a bloody revolution!

You do realise that after most bloody revolution's it's actually the general public that suffers the most...

"Of course it's worth it, London brings in more money from overseas tourists than the rest of the UK put together....consider it a worthwhile investment"

Investment should only be made when you have money to invest

With all the money they have been spending annual ask the question how has it got to this situation

"Queenie should be footing some large portion of the bill out of her own finances"

Should she have any ? In the first place ?

This country has been supporting the monarchy for such a long time

If we weren't there they would have been bankrupt a long time ago . Which is the reason the state took it all over in the first place .

I know that people hate the royal family and I do kind of understand why but aren't the people that hate them proud of their country? If we didn't have the royals kicking around what national events would we have? Take away the weddings etc, what would bring our nation together once in a while? I am honestly interested to know, I get the reason why as you don't like it that they don't work etc (well actually when you think about it they do work bloody hard for charities and so forth and we only pay them 53p each a year) and the queen is still going strong at her age, if my nan was alive today she wouldn't still be standing up for 6 hours with boats floating passed!)

I'm not after an argument as I respect everyone's opinions we can't all like the same things but if we were to take away the royals why would people come to London? How would the shops etc survive?

Hate the Royal family.........WHY? Just don't see why.

President Thatcher or Commissar Blair.... NO THANKS.

The money is to be spent over 10 years and I think it is a bit more than just a "tarting up" job.

Having a German name wasn't considered a good idea in 1917 so it as changed from Saxe Coburg to Windsor

Any historic building is worth saving. For the most part the Queen uses it more like an office or a place to entertain visitors from all walks of life including the garden parties that anyone can attend. Its a major part of the tourist route.

"£369m that will go back into the economy, providing jobs and growth. "

Hear hear! The craftsmanship that will be required to restore Buckingham Palace will not be cheap but it keeps the skills alive.

£369 million on this project will have a longer lasting positive legacy than if it were spent anywhere else in the public sector. And a lot of the money will be raised by revenue from tourists visits.

You think that doing up the piping inside the building will increase tourist visits?

That is what you really believe?

You do realise that tourists are not allowed inside dont you.

As they work / have income. I do not see why we should be funding the renovation.

No, but not letting it deteriorate will help. And yes, they are.

Out of interest, how do you feel about spending several billions repairing the houses of parliament?

I have no problem spending the money to refurbish Buckingham Palace as long as the British public have more access to the majority of the building.

I think the queen and Charles do a good job and they bring lots of tourist money into this country even though Charles us a weirdo.

My biggest problem with the royal family is Andrew and his embarrassing ex wife and their two really ugly daughters, Andrew is a horrible arrogant and awful human being, his ex wife is an embarrassment to society and a total freeloader, the daughter have inherited the worst traits of their parents and should be disqualified from carrying out any royal duties because they are so awful to look at in appearance and dress.

Refurbish the palace but only for the use of the King or queen and make the rest of the royal family earn their own money and buy their own house like the rest of us.

It's not really their house or their home though, it's predominantly an official property used for state functions and tourism purposes. However much personal wealth they have, it's a bit like me being asked to foot the bill for the offices where I work, or the hotel I stay in if I'm working away.

Technically the Queen is paying for it. Income from the Crown estates goes straight to the Treasury. A small proportion, I think around 13%, is then passed onto the Queen annually for her spending. The Treasury are increasing the percentage she is allowed to about 25% in order to fund the work. So, in a way she's fleeced by the taxman a hellofalot more than any of us!

When I was born she was the richest woman on earth. Now she's way down the rich list way behind JK Rowling! When Corbyn becomes Prime Minister she will be stripped of every last penny and left to die on the pavement which will delight many people but Britain's tourist industry will be weaker.
