well whoever lost it has probably reported it so if it hasn't been imei blacklisted yet it will be soon - so it's just going to be an expensive doorstop to you.

May as well hand it in ..... after you've checked for home made porn and naughty pics naturally

This.

Or look to see if there's an entry called ICE (In Case of Emergency).

I wouldn't look to see if there are any photos on it, in the same way that I'd not read someone's diary if I found one somewhere.

If only it were that simple, its been blocked so theres no way to ge a number, the person who lost it will have registered it lost/stolen so theyve shut it down!

probably got a replacement.. see how im trying to convince myself keeping it is alright lol.

Police is probably best bet

They can be unblocked but still, I wouldn't think it would be right to keep it though.

It would be nice having a free iphone but just think how nice it would be for the owner to get it back....

.... thats as long as they not the type to just say "oh ta" then shut the door in ya face like what I got when I returned a wallet I had found

Check the Sim card... Pop into the SP store... (O2 etc)...

They can match phone serial number to the owners address.

I would hand it in to the police, if I were you. Having the phone switched on means that it's already transmitted its IMEI number back to whichever network operator it's registered with. That, along with the GPS co-ordinates, mean that it can, theoretically, be tracked to within approx 100 metres. Chances are that neither the police nor the network operator will go to too much effort to trace you, but all the time it's switched on you're telling them where the phone is regardless.

...and that's just assuming that the owner hasn't installed an app that reports back its GPS co-ordinates via email if it receives a signal to say it's been lost / stolen. If the phone has been locked to prevent you signing-in then that's an app installed on the phone that does that... the network operator would just blacklist the IMEI.

You could always change the IMEI number - but that's not particularly straightforward to do... and is also illegal

Hand it in or switch it off and bin it. It's really not of any use to you.

funny enough as someone who lost their iphone 4 on friday night.. and was in such a panic... only to have it found and returned back to me on saturday night.. I would always say try and give it back.....

and a word of warning anyway.. if they have the find my iphone app on the mobile.. it can be tracked to within 10 meters... and it can actually be zapped so no one else can use it....

thought an imei block could only be unblocked by the operator??

I hope you do your best to return it to the owner for these reasons:

1: smartphones can mean a hell of a lot to the owner because they have their contacts list, personal photos and important diary/calendar entries etc.

2: they've somehow paid for the ruddy thing in the first place. ....yes I know they may have insurance but that remains a 'may'.

3: it's easily traced and easily jammed by the network... it's no good to you but means a lot to its rightful owner.

4: having a 'finders keepers' attitude is how selfish people think.

5: I don't like selfish people (refer to point 4).

while on a social meet for a coffee on frid a couple at next table had gone and left their phone on the table- i had no doubt in my mind what i would do . handed it in to the manager. the woman came back about half hour later to check for it - she thanked me for my honesty - so all is well with the world

I wouldn't like to argue as not 100% sure, all I know is the IMEI can be changed with the right bit of software.

Eitherway though, I think it should be returned or handed in to police if blocked.

When I was 7 I had this really neat Casio watch that I got as a birthday present... it had a game on it, which back then was pretty fucking amazing!

Anyway, I left it at the swimming pool by mistake when I was getting changed. It must have only been 5 minutes before I realised, but by the time I went back someone had stolen it. My Mum and I checked the lost property at the swimming pool and even went to the police station in case someone had handed it in there, but to no avail.

I was devastated. Absolutely gutted that someone could do such a thing. I felt terrible that I'd lost my birthday present and really pissed off that whoever found it didn't do the decent thing and hand it in.

Whenever I've found lost items I've always remembered that sinking feeling I had as a kid when I realised I'd not be seeing my Casio watch ever again. I've handed in mobile phones, wallets and jewellery over the years.

I'd ask her what the hell she was doing in the boys' changing room of the swimming pool.

And I'd only be nice to her if she gives me back the watch

If it's got a pin lock you won't be able to access anything on it. Your choice for what you want to do, if it's been blocked even if you get it unblocked you may not be able to use it anyway so hand it into the police

in fact let me take this chance to advise EVERYONE with a 4s,4 or 3gs to download the "find my iphone" app produced by apple themselves...

you can then track the iphone if you lose it.. use someone elses iphone or a computer to track it... auto lock it of you lose it... or even lock and wipe it if it has "sensitive" stuff on it....

id have called someone off the contact list straight away before they reported it lost and the network provider blocks it

if they havnt got the right cover they not get a replacement for free

if its already blocked stick it on ebay for sold as spares or parts lol

Stuff that's handed in to the police often ends up on the Virtual Bumblebee auction site. Not sure whether mobile phones do, because they could potentially contain personal information about its previous owner.

Your making assumptions I can get on a contact list!! Or ever could. It might as well be a block of nicely painted shit for the use it is!

All I know is it can charge, but wont do much more than that.

Well, chances are they've replaced it and wiped the phone of data, You can't get into it due to the passcode so you might as well hand it in or leave it with someone at the place you found it if you found it in a club or something.

"Stuff that's handed in to the police often ends up on the Virtual Bumblebee auction site. "

Not in our area! The items that I have handed in have been returned to me if no one has claimed them! As far as I can find out, only personal items like ID and credit/debit cards and licences are kept by the police.

We have had three items returned to us in the last two years, the last one was a BMX bike that we donated to a young lad who had his stolen, after changing the colour...

We have also had a Nintendo DS and Nokia N95 returned to us after no one claimed them. The phone was checked with the origional owner, but they had sold it on ebay and there was no new contract.

Best advice I can give is to hand it in. That way you can have the moral high ground, as we should all strive for and you may still get the phone back...
