"Bruce Hornsby & The Range's recording of Jack Straw by The Grateful Dead. I doubt anybody is familiar with any of that though. "
Bruce Hornsby

Grateful Dead

Just in case anyone wishes to familiarise themselves with any of that |

Physical bt Adam Ant... sleazy as hell until Nine Inch Nails covered it... just about prefer the NIN version.
And love Marilyn Manson's cover of Tainted Love.... like all of them, but his is spectacularly cheap and nasty... just my type |

Also his version of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus
My favourite is Sound of Silence originally by Simon & Garfunkel and covered by Disturbed - superb |

"The sound of silence by disturbed. "
Really? Each to their own, but no way! I recall when the original came out and was No 1 for a few weeks; the Album created was top of the Album charts for over a year.
When Disturbed match that, maybe it will be as good - maybe? |

"Stereophonics did a beautiful cover of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' on Jools Holland a few years back...if you can find a rip of it it's well worth a listen"
I'll ask Jools himself when he's staying at my hotel later in the year; he stays with us every time he's performing in the West Midlands. |

Another shout for some Johnny Cash covers:
I hung my head - Sting
Heart of Gold - Neil Young
If you could read my mind - Gordon Lightfoot
I'm on fire - Bruce Springsteen
The last one is sexual |

"Anything of Bob Dylan covered by anyone.
Lies, lies and damn lies."
I agree. I find the old Columbia advertising slogan, "Nobody sings Dylan like Dylan" to be oh so true. I'd be hard pressed to name any Dylan cover that I prefer over the original, though there are of course some good cover versions out there. |

And that’s why I have such a soft spot for you, Howard. Dylan appreciators are a rare and fine breed. |

I owe my knowledge of its existence to the Easyjet ad but Cat Power's version of Dreams is smoky-voiced chanteuse perfection.
Her Sea of Love is also brilliant. |

Not sure if this counts but I prefer George Michael to Freddie Mercury on Somebody to love the reason I say I am not sure it counts is the rest of Queen played the instruments on both records |

Here's a version of 'You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go' by Mary Lou Lord that I absolutely love (though it's still not better than the original!)

"Hurt originally by nine inch nails.
Covered by Johnny cash.
Even nin think it's better.
This. The Johnny Cash version is sublime. "
The way he folds down the lid on the keys at the end.
Last thing he recorded I believe.
Poignant. |

Green Manalishi - Judas Priest
You really got me - Van Halen
Ain’t no love (in the heart of the City) - Whitenake
And not necessarily better but love the versions
Sound of Silence and Land of Confusion - Disturbed (particularly enjoyed the videos) |
