Trump mulls an offer for Greenland

Everything has its price in American eyes.

The Wall Street Journal discovered Trump asked his officials to looking into the possibility of buying Greenland.

Just imagine how many lives might have been saved if George W Bush had just bought Afghanisatan and Iraq instead of sending the military in lol.

I didn't realise Denmark wanted to sell it!

The Danes do subsidise it to the tune of £420million per year though, so who knows

Well, I guess the Yanks might have quite a liability looming on the horizon.

Camp Century was a bizarre Cold War missile site built inside the ice sheet.

Powered by a nuclear reactor and later abandoned.

The shift and melt of the ice sheet threatens to bring it to the surface.

I doubt if Denmark want to pay for the clean-up.

It's not the first time that the USA has mulled over getting Greenland.

Harry Trueman offered the Danes $100 million back in 1946.

A curious aside about Greenland is that it is the only country to have left the EU before the UK.

Early 1980s, after a referendum, the member state Denmark removed it from EU jurisdiction.

The UK could do the same - remove England and Wales from EU jurisdiction - but chooses not to.

So Trump is in the marketplace to purchase islands.

The truth about Brexit is coming out maybe?

Get the British Isles out of the EU and bankrupt it by putting it into WTO terms.

Then go in with a rock bottom bid to buy the British Isles.

Crafty or what?

Who would get the proceeds of the sale? Boris or Elizabeth?

The facility was evacuated in 1965, and the nuclear generator removed. Project Iceworm was canceled, and Camp Century closed in 1966.

The project generated valuable scientific information and provided scientists with some of the first ice cores, still being used by climatologists today

Greenland is not part of the EU.

It left in early 1980s after a referendum.

I wish the English and Welsh would just follow their example - it would save an awful lot of aggro.

There are a number of dynamic things the UK could do if it wished, however it forces all countries to play by the same rules for reasons I can not phantom other than being a throwback to colonial times.

Yes, the UK does not have the constitutional flexibility.

As unions go, it is a zillion times more centralised than the European one I keep hear people complaining about.

All sovereignty has been lost to the centre.

There are checks at gun shows if you buy from the vendors, but people wander about and sell privately to each other. I've seen guys with shopping trolleys full. It's a major loophole.

The problem with current background checks is that they're not good at spotting people who've had mental health issues. The databases are not properly linked. The current check just makes sure you're a legal resident and have no criminal record.

I don't know what the rules are like from state to state.

I visited Colorado and anyone can buy any gun in Walmart, except for machine guns and rocket launchers. As long as you're over 18, and not legally prohibited (ie convicted felon).

I guess the "computer games cause mass shootings" wasn't cutting the mustard, so he decided some other distraction tactics. But in fairness, all politicians from all different countries try to distract people when something is making them look like a knob.

He seems very upset.

It's no way to treat the United States, he says.

The Danish PM is "nasty".

Solidarity with the people of Greenland.

The days of people being bought and sold ought to be long gone.

Trump is just an embarrassment.

ive taken out the bits that "someone" has put in because it is a red herring.... because there WAS legistlation in place before... so its not like its so radical is wasn't in place before...

there was an "assault weapon" ban within the 1994 crime bill that passed (funny enough that was put in after a mass shooting incident in stockton, california when someone went mad in a school playground with an "assault weapon" and killed 6 kids)

the only issue was there was a sunset clause within in which meant that part of the bill had to be renewed every 10 yrs...

it wasn't renewed under republican president bush in 2004....

see... the argument they made then is that you don't need an assault weapon to "hunt"..... thats still an argument like that you could make! the then ATF made the distinction between assault weapons and sporting guns/hunting guns...

in fact my mate who hunts makes the same argument as bob did.... which is "if you need an assault weapon to hunt a deep... then stick to fishing!"

and as for background checks..... its one of the few "90-10" issues in politics that most people agree there should be extended checks, which is ironic since trump has actually loosened them since he took office, as he has reverse someone of the obama executive order provisions....

i don't think trump realised that in formal terms it wasn't the danish government that invited him.... it was the Queen of Denmark....

so imagine if he had done the same thing to Queen Elizabeth...... you would rightly be horrified....

anyway... there is a theory going round that he found out Obama was also going to Denmark at the end of the month for a visit... and we all know he is very sensitive when it comes to contrasts being made (crowd sizes for example) so this is his way of getting out of going by creating a storm.....

Maybe Trump wasn't as misguided as first thought. Denmark has form on selling territory, when it sold the islands of the Danish Antilles in 1917, to the USA.

They gave up their piece of Carribean paradise for $25 million, preferring to keep Greenland instead. They now have to subsidise the 56000 people on Greenland to the tune of €420 million per year.

I remember reading reports in National Geographic a few years back that with the ice sheets melting in Greenland that there is a high possibility that there are untapped gold deposits bigger than the ones in Alaska.

Yes, Greenland is rich in "rare earth metals" important for electronics etc

China is buying up reserves in Africa.

Another factor is that Russia and China are well ahead in opening up new sea routes as the ice sheets shrink.

Russia is also opening up new oil and gas deposits in the region.

Just noticed as well obama, when asked about a renewal of the assault weapon ban, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said: “the president believes there are other strategies we can take to enforce the laws that are already on the books.”

U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-New York, introduced legislation to renew the ban. However, the legislation did not receive an endorsement from Obama.

Obama was big on talking about gun control before he took office but never really ran on that policy, however

After Obama’s election, gun sales reached a record pace as gun owners snatched up guns, particularly those that had been branded assault weapons under the defunct 1994 assault weapons ban, out of an apparent fear that Obama would crack down on gun ownership. The Obama presidency, however, had limited impact gun rights.

Obama also loosened gun control, During his first term, Obama didn't call for any major new restriction on guns or gun owners. Instead, he urged authorities to enforce the state and federal laws already on the books. In fact, Obama signed only two major laws that address how guns are carried in America, and both actually expand the rights of gun owners.

One of the laws allows gun owners to carry weapons in national parks; that law took effect in February 2012 and replaced President Ronald Reagan's policy of required guns be locked in glove compartments of trunks of cars that enter national parks.

Another gun law signed by Obama allows Amtrak passengers to carry guns in checked baggage, a move that reversed a measure put in place after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Obama from what I can see didn’t pass any gun laws that would reduce gun crime

Also AR’s are a tiny percentage of all gun related crime, deaths and homicides, in fact almost two thirds of deaths are suicides by hand gun, and knives are far more responsible for homicides than AR’s

To be fair yes it’s disrespectful to the queen of course and I would hope since she stated her surprise that he may of addressed this privately with her, but no idea if he has, as we are aware I fully believe he as a person is a dic

Not sure why Obama going would put him off mind as the Danes didn’t want to discuss the sale so he decided not to go and politely explained he was looking forward to rescheduling

Obama had bigger crowds as he was meant to be the new hope, but of course he let everyone down and also as he was separating children at the border and caging people at the border and deporting hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants from the USA think his crowds are a little smaller now

There's a third, but unlikely option, that he's sharing all the race hate stuff as a tactic to stir up support amongst the ignorant and bigoted people who think he's great. As part of his re-election plan?

Personally I expect that he believes all the bullshit he spouts. His general approach to life is of someone who is extremely insecure and ignorant.

Fabio is the Fab version of a Goliath when it comes to adding useful, interesting and engaging content on this section of the website. He rarely gets drawn into the claws of a troll and simply ignores them until they (and they always do) disappear into the ether from which they came. Is he always right? No of course not, who is. But his content is ALWAYS engaging.

You will have to be here for a very long time and up your game quite considerably to elevate yourself from where you are perceived to be at the moment. Sneering, name calling and insulting other posters is a skill that. A child could pick up. Perhaps you could try to be more engaging rather than more divisive?

Pretty certain I won’t get bored calling you out but understand why you have just started to stop debating as your track record wasn’t very good

But I do admit I will miss proving you wrong again in the future

Miss you fab x

Fabio is the Fab version of a Goliath when it comes to adding useful, interesting and engaging content on this section of the website. He rarely gets drawn into the claws of a troll and simply ignores them until they (and they always do) disappear into the ether from which they came. Is he always right? No of course not, who is. But his content is ALWAYS engaging.

You will have to be here for a very long time and up your game quite considerably to elevate yourself from where you are perceived to be at the moment. Sneering, name calling and insulting other posters is a skill that. A child could pick up. Perhaps you could try to be more engaging rather than more divisive?"

O yeah he’s great if your looking for left wing political bias, he’s one of the best, and as it’s 90% left here you guys lap it up

But if anyone offers an opposing view or facts it’s trolls or racists or alt right,, see that where he and most go wrong

And did he not champion a politician who was aligned with paedophiles in a thread ??

Bravo for trying.

There are plenty of people here with opposing view and different things to say. Who make the debate interesting.

Then there are those who make up nonsense about people, insult those who they don't understand, and who use meaningless catchphrases instead of making a point.

This is the last time I will reply to you.

Stop accusing me of supporting sexual harassment. This is complete nonsense.

You have nothing useful or interesting to add to any conversation.

You have referred to me as "loony left" on multiple occasions. Which by your definition is a non-bigot. So let's leave it at that. I am completely comfortable with the label.

You said it, it’s in black and white on this forum dude ,,, just saying

“You have nothing useful or interesting to add to any conversation.”

By that you mean my open and fact based responses don’t fit your left wing narrative, so You won’t debate or respond as your blinkered and narrow minded ,, hey I’ve admitted I’ve been wrong on here, it’s cool and liberating to learn new things, try it you might even like it

“You have referred to me as "loony left" on multiple occasions. Which by your definition is a non-bigot. So let's leave it at that. I am completely comfortable with the label.”

Urrrmm that’s not what loony left means.

Loony left means: Left Wing political policies or ideas that are utterly ridiculous and absurd to the point that only a ******* could possibly think they were in any way valid

Yeah that all sounds about right

Is there no end to the idiocy?

Trump asking if the US could detonate nuclear weapons to blow away hurricanes.

Em, er, no. You just create a radioactive hurricane spewing toxic shit everywhere.

Yeah I’m not with Trump on this one lol, quite a stupid idea and obviously something he knows nothing about,

To be fair it was during a hurricane briefing and apparently it was something that was asked previously before. He was just asking a question to try and find a solution to saving many many lives and peoples well being

Of course it would have a far worse effect but he asked a question and thankfully he was informed that it wouldn’t work

Sorry Donald not your finest moment here, but his heart was in the right place

Yay Fabio you finally have a legitimate reason to have a go at him ,,, for being stupid ,,, but we kind of knew that anyway

He has tweeted saying he didn’t say it mind ( think he may of done mind ) and there isn’t actually any proof of it mind is there at the mo ? and we know the media will run this regardless if fact or not like all the other lies about him.

But I can see this as something he may of said, but it isn’t proven ,,, yet lol

And it was was a nice complimentary tweet so why not retweet ? Just because you don’t like kh? ( I don’t like her either )

Mindless nonsense like bombing hurricane is funny, but really it distracts from the real issues.

Is his Twitter feed for real? Most of the time it looks satirical.

I wonder if this is the reason Trump wants Greenland.

A revival of Project Iceworm.

Trump is spending huge sums of money to expand the US nuclear arsenal and is now testing medium-range missiles previously banned since the Reagan era.

Back in the 1960s, Project Iceworm was a plan to build the world's biggest ICBM launch site beneath the ice-sheet.

600 missiles with multiple nuclear warheads, located in 52,000 miles of tunnels, spread across an area three times the size of Denmark.

And because Greenland is so much closer to Russia than the United States, that attack distance gave the US a huge strategic advantage.

It caused a diplomatic rift with Greenland some time ago when it became public - Denmark had given the US consent for a military base on condition no nuclear weapons would be stored there.

The US abandoned the idea when its engineers were unable to come up with a design capable of adjusting to the movement in the ice sheet.
