I was a manager of a team of housekeepers, mostly female, mostly not English, around 14 of them. They were largely older or unattractive.
There was one mid 30's who had been around become pregnant, gone on maternity leave and then returned.
At first when I took on the job I noticed her as she was younger than most and whilst not attractive as such was okay. I had thoughts of her but she seemed shy, quiet and unlikely to be interested in me.
On her return from maternity leave she would arrive for work early and sit in my office waiting to start her shift. We barely spoke for several weeks apart from the pleasantries and some detail regarding work.
One evening she came in and I asked 'Alright?' As was my frequently used greeting she said 'yes' but it was clear she wasn't.
She is Polish, 5ft 2" long dark hair, slim ish, small bust and more pear shaped with an arse that is full. She always looked well made up, not overly, but cared about her presentation. Lovely green/blue eyes but her nose was rather prominent, almost like pinochio. Nonetheless she was polite, pleasant, spoke well and not unpleasant to the eye overall.
She had been married about a year, had her second child recently but been with her husband for around 18 years. She claimed the only man she had ever had sex with. (All this come out in later conversations)
I asked her if she was actually okay as she didn't seem to be.
She began telling me about her difficulties with the children, her husband, his work and how her life was so dull and tiring that coming to work for 3 hours was a bit of a relief.
The following week or two she continued her same routine, in early, sat in the office but now conversation became frequent. She would ask me things, advice I guess, discuss situations in marriage and bringing up children. She would be open about how her and her husband were not 'in tune'.
One evening we talked and reflected on matters and talked of how I was not popular with the staff. Grumpy, short shrift and not keen to have any conversation with them. Although her and I did and she asked me why....
I said that in the circumstances it seemed natural but since I was not one for having friends it was quite unusual. She teased me about not having friends and I said that I had a cat whom made up for this deficit. She laughed at me and said how could a cat be a friend? I told her that he would greet me when I got home and then after eating he would sit on my lap, this was as much as I needed.
Smiling she said 'So if I wanted to be your friend I would need to sit on your lap?'
I laughed and said I wasn't sure about that, it would not make us friends as such but it would be interesting.
She walked to the door looked around, came back toward the desk and stood in front of me.
'I want to sit on your lap'
I eased the chair out from the desk and she stood nervously. Then she threw her leg over mine and sat on my lap facing me. After no more than a few seconds she climbed off and seemed worried, scared, almost in tears. She said she shouldn't have done that and scurried off and went to her work.
I was left slightly bemused.
I saw her after her shift and asked if she was okay. She said she was worried her husband would know, that she felt guilty and as soon as she got in the car when he picked her up he would sense something was wrong
I tried to calm her and tell it would be fine but she just said that she felt bad and would probably just blurt out to him about what she had done.
The next evening was slightly awkward at first but I asked if everything was okay. She said that he had noticed she was 'odd' and she had had to tell him.
I asked what she had said. Her answer shocked me.
She had told him that I had touched her and that it had made her feel uneasy.
I was angry as this was a bare faced lie and could get me into trouble. I asked how he had reacted and she said that she should report me to a senior manager.
I was fuming!
She said that she had later explained to him that she may have over reacted as I had only been trying to calm her as she was upset having had a tough afternoon with the kids. That she may have got it wrong.
All lies.
In the end he accepted her explanation and simply told her to be less friendly and less candid about her feelings.
Later than evening she came to the office and seemed different. Guilt had passed, no awkward atmosphere and she was buoyant. She laughed about the previous evening and said that since she had not been near another man in over 18 years it had freaked her, her behaviour had freaked her out.
I said it was fine and to forget it.
But.....I couldn't. The fact that she did it, wanted to, sat on me the way she did and her clearly wanting to be friendly with someone who was hardly empathetic with his staff, let alone over 20 years older than her, told me she may just be interested.....
How right I was
