I’ve recently come across the art of Ithell Colquhoun (1906-1988), a female British artist who aligned with Surrealism for a period of time in the 30s but ultimately charted her own course beyond. In recent decades, her archives were found to contain masses of previously unseen incredible imagery of couples engaged in complex sexual acts. For those who haven’t seen this stuff look it up. It’s very erotic and very compelling. It ultimately connects back to a life long spiritual inquiry of Colquhoun’s where she investigated the relationship between the art, the sacred and the everyday world we inhabit. In her time she explored and joined various spiritual communities including neo-pagans and 20th century occult sects like the Golden Dawn. There were relationships drawn to the practices of tantra and notional Celtic pasts among many others.
I’m very curious about about this type of perspective and how integrating positive concepts of sex into one’s spiritual worldview and indeed day to day life might lead a happier more complete life.
No doubt this will all sound like nonsense to most but if the above is meaningful to you or you’ve found ways of approaching and drawing sex (in all its forms) into your spiritual life and/or any wider ways of living more fully I’d love to hear about it, here or in messages. |
